How much are you spending on your energy bills every month?

I am with octopus and just checked my exact energy usage each month. I have used £54 worth of electricity and £111 worth of gas in January. So, the total is £165. Several years ago, we were paying around £95. We are family of 2 adults and 2 very young DC.
We have a 4 bed house built in 1975, it's detached with two living rooms, kitchen and 2 toilets. We have smart thermostats on most radiators which we use to control and set temperature for each room and we are conscious to reduce temperature at night. But, still it feels like a huge bill.
How much are you paying and AIBU to think it's a big amount for the energy we use?

Jan - £150 gas and lecky

Smallish, oldish, 2 bed terrace

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/02/2025 20:14

1 bed flat, January usage was £58.90 for electricity and £96.36 for gas. We're currently paying £83 a month as Octopus reduced our payments as we had a large balance.

Redglitter · 15/02/2025 20:18

About £70 gas & electricity. 2 bedroom house but just me in it

laudspb · 15/02/2025 20:27

DD just gone up to£402 per month (actual cost for Jan is lots more). House won't go above 18°. 1960s, shit insulation. Currently under a blanket, Oodie on.

CherryMarigold · 15/02/2025 21:21

£545 last month. 6 people in a 5 bed house, heating on 5-6 hours a day plus sex pond on all year.

LashesZ · 15/02/2025 21:32

£128 combined with Octopus. I've gone form fix to fix and it actually went down from £145. Heating is on almost constantly as on mat leave so at home and my house is very open plan.

3 bed semi with a nippy conservatory.

Fencehedge · 15/02/2025 21:52

Are you on the Tracker tariff? There was a few days when the electric went to over 40p per Kwh in Jan, plus a generally cold month. We're on Tracker and our bill was around £155, it's usually around £125. We pay a variable direct debit so that's definitely what we've used.

Dutchhouse14 · 15/02/2025 22:23

Also with octopus, rural so not on gas (oil central heating) we currently pay £150 a month for electricity as we are using up an account credit but usage is £190(!) a month.
4 bed, 3 reception, 1920s semi, double glazed but not particularly well insulated.
5 of us at home, 2 of us WFH every day.
Do a lot of washing /tumble drying and have underfloor heating in kitchen which is expensive to run. But still sounds like a lot compared to OPs usage.

Amba1998 · 15/02/2025 22:24

£180 combined gas and elec in Jan

the washer dryer dishwasher feel like they are constantly on. Heating probably on for 3 hours a day

energy prices have increased significantly in recent years

Modern 4 bed house over 3 levels, approx 134 sq metres. We pay the bill amount when it arrives each month, which for some reason they send on 25th of the month, so we get the nice present of a bill on Christmas Day. It is typically around £210/month for both Gas and electricity combined at this time of year and around £100/month in summer. The heating is on for a couple of hours in the morning, and about 5 hours in the afternoon. The thermostat is set to 20. My husband is quite religious about turning the heating off if we go away for even a couple of days, and we turn the central heating off entirely around early May and usually try and hold out on turning it on again until end of October. We are with EDF.

My imagination is running wild

henlake7 · 15/02/2025 23:08

Octopus. Mine was £160 for Jan (electric only).
No central heating but I have an electric heater on for about 12 hrs a day at moment, just in the room I'm in. My house is Baltic though, 10C without heating and struggles to reach 17C with it.
I pay £100 a month DD to build up some decent credit for winter.

hopsalong · 15/02/2025 23:41

About £600 a month. Big, poorly insulated old house. Hope it will be less once we've spent £££ on refurbishment/ rebuilding it. Alas, at the moment we're don't have the £££ to keep the heating bills down. Also we like it hot.

gatheryerosebuds · 15/02/2025 23:43

around £500 per month eeek

I have to agree...a sex pond sounds very fishy

AmusedMaker · 16/02/2025 07:53

£350pm gas / electric combined.

3 bed 1930’s semi. Can’t believe it’s that much but it is.
we’re with British Gas.

HoraceCope · 16/02/2025 07:58

a little bit in credit, £200

Some of these bills sound crazy. I live in a 2 bed terrace (3rd bed in the attic but it's very much a spare and isn't heated) built in the mid 19th century. No cavity walls. I never let the temp go below 16 and it's 18 for a few hours every morning and all evening. I don't have a tumble dryer but I run a dishwasher every day and a washing machine whenever I need (much less than the MN average though). Cooking is electric.
My bills with OVO are £85 a
Month - I pay all year to build up a cushion in the summer.

It’s no wonder your bills are lower, your house isn’t at the minimum recommended temp (18 degrees) so of course you’re saving money.

NoseyFarkers · 16/02/2025 08:19

£380pm, also Octopus, for Jan. Gas and Elec.

Jan is the worst though - always the highest month by far. I expect a drop in Feb and then a far bigger drop in March.

Between April and Sept, gas costs go to about £30 and Electric £100 ish so a clear £200pm cheaper than right now.

ChanelBoucle · 16/02/2025 08:23

£360 this month with Octopus.
Five bedroom detached old house with gas Aga that is running all the time. Washing machine and tumble dryer used almost every day.

BigBoysDontCry · 16/02/2025 08:42

Also with octopus and on a fixed tarrif. My DD is just under £200 a month but at the moment I'm about £20 a week for electricity and £50 to 60 for gas. So using about £300 a month. 20 year old 4 bed house, 2 adults, both working at home, heating off overnight and on very low in rooms we aren't using. I'm in Scotland, it's cold. My standing charge is around a pound per day so that's £30 a month before you start.

MNersSufferFromContextomy · 16/02/2025 08:50

I think you are paying a very low price. We are in a similar situation as you, five bed detached, two adults one child, smart meter so pay for exactly what we use and January cost us £360. Roughly 160 electricity and 200 gas. I go to bed and dream of your Bill. It is a nightmare lately. Previous month was £275 and November was £250. Can’t wait for it to start warming up weatherwise.

HoraceCope · 16/02/2025 08:52

this is a downside to wfh

FLOWER19833 · 16/02/2025 09:02
