to put rubbish in public bins because it won't fit in the wheelie bin?

I have a lot of rubbish despite recycling as much as possible. I have a DC with SEN and an eating disorder so have to buy a lot of packet food that comes with all the wrappings.

I am not entitled to a bigger bin. The wheelie bin used to be bigger which worked well but they have changed it to half the size and it is only collected every two weeks.

The bin fills up very quickly so the only way I can manage is to put the rubbish in public bins. I can't get to the tip as it is too far away and I have no one to look after DC who can't be left alone.

Do you recycle? Our council lets us put our additional recycling in clear bags, but general waste has to fit in the bin.

rubbwubb · 14/02/2025 21:08

This looks really good, thank you. I have found some recycling points nearby.

@BashfulClam sorry Blush hands up to being one of those lazy posters badly skim reading!(it is Friday...I've had a glass of wine!) But I suppose my point stands, check what the local council's policies are, as I say ours don't allow extra general waste, but we can put out extra recycling, either in clear bags, or broken down in a cardboard box (if it's not wet). Presumably if the majority of waste is plastic as described, additional curbside recycling will help.

Vaxtable · 14/02/2025 21:26

You need to be careful if you are doing this. It’s treated as flytipping

if you eat packet foods I don’t understand why you have so much household rubbish as it’s recyclable

123456abcdef · 14/02/2025 21:33

Do you know that supermarkets have soft plastic recycling?

Ddakji · 14/02/2025 21:35

Our local Sainsbury’s takes this kind of recycling so might be worth seeing if you can get rid of it that way.

purplecorkheart · 14/02/2025 21:35

You probably need to look into the relevant bylaws.

Two bins near me have been removed because people were dumping household waste, and I know one person was prosecuted for doing it. (There was a warning on the bin). All the bins now in my town have grids on them that make putting a chocolate wrapper hard to put into them.

All our bin collections are private companies and sadly there are a lot of illegal dumping in the rural areas near the town.

There are a couple of men with a van type companies that are linked with a local recycling/dump centre. Might me worth researching to see if their is something similar nearby.

Strawberryfruitcorner · 14/02/2025 21:39

We have a problem with people doing this in my town and it causes litter to spill over and when winds come it blows everywhere.

Also dog walkers put their poo bags on top of the full bins which looks awful.

I know it’s hard but I think you need to find a better more responsible solution.

I have seen it for soft plastic. Not for the harder plastic that won't scrunch up.

I tear up or flatten down any cardboard and squash cans, squeeze bottles etc to make my recycling as compact as possible.

Instead of large bin liners I use much smaller bags for household rubbish as large black bags fill up the bin too quickly.

BigSilly · 14/02/2025 21:53

No of course you are it allowed to do this. You have to take it to the council tip or pay a private company to get rid of it

Call your local council and ask if they have a larger bin size. There are two sizes, the standard and slightly bigger. As you have somewhat of a medical need.

The majority of food packaging is now recyclable so double check all of it is definetly non recyclable. Also worth looming at composting for food waste. Join a local FB page and ask if anyone with an allotment would like the composting.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 14/02/2025 22:09

The harder plastic that won't scrunch up, that should be possible to put in your at home recycling bin?

Our council won't give anyone an extra general waste bin unless they've got loads of people at one address, but they'll give as many recycling containers as you want or you can put it out in clear bags - have you asked for an extra recycling bin or just 'a bin' and they've assumed general waste and said no?

Cazs818 · 14/02/2025 22:17

I’ve had the same issue , ended up getting a private company who does residential to come and empty our bins every other week for £12 a fortnight

shouldn't have to but without their help our front garden is constantly over flowing with black bags and no where to put them or it’s cost 3 times the amount in petrol and getting car cleaned after numerous tip runs , our council won’t take a bin if the lid is not fully shut either 🙄 can only see the problem getting worse if they change to 3 weekly or monthly collections

How many people live in your home? Are there significant medical needs which produce additional waste?

SantaAnaWinds · 14/02/2025 22:24

I bought a bigger bin from Amazon. A 240l one is about £60. It’s been well worth it

ValentinesGranny · 14/02/2025 22:25

I have double sized green and blue wheelie (landfill and recycling) bins because of medical need. I just had to prove to the local council I am tube fed. They said if I required more I could also have extra bins.

Latenightreader · 14/02/2025 22:26

Some years ago my grandfather used to do this, until he received a summons for flytipping. He had to go to court (presumably magistrates - don't remember the details) and received a fine. He didn't create much rubbish, and dropping a small bag in the bin when he went for his daily paper in his mind saved him putting the bins out... We had been warning him about it for ages!

Its the first line of the OP?

Orangeoranges42 · 14/02/2025 22:36

This can be considered as fly tipping.

You need to do an audit of your waste and you’ll truly see what you’re throwing away and what you could reduce. Otherwise contact the council and explain they can often help you find sensible ways to reduce or redirect your waste. Otherwise you might be considered under a medical issue and entitled to larger bin.
