to put rubbish in public bins because it won't fit in the wheelie bin?

I have a lot of rubbish despite recycling as much as possible. I have a DC with SEN and an eating disorder so have to buy a lot of packet food that comes with all the wrappings.

I am not entitled to a bigger bin. The wheelie bin used to be bigger which worked well but they have changed it to half the size and it is only collected every two weeks.

The bin fills up very quickly so the only way I can manage is to put the rubbish in public bins. I can't get to the tip as it is too far away and I have no one to look after DC who can't be left alone.

Our council collects recycling every week and non recyclable waste every 3 weeks so it's created a huge problem with people using public bins and they are clamping down on it and prosecuting for fly tipping.

I see both sides of the argument but I do agree that something has to be done to stop it because in our car park (supermarket where I work) it's a huge problem and people are dumping all sorts of rubbish, especially around the clothing donation bins and it's an eyesore for everyone.

MicroMallow · 15/02/2025 13:35

we all do this round here the bins are full of black bags of rubbish. i do it all the time. fortnightly collections aren't enough for us (family of 5) i take rubbish to the public bins a few times a week so do others as i always spot others doing it

RandomMess · 15/02/2025 14:27

We had to pay but now have wheelie bins for recycling rather than small useless boxes.

I am not entitled to a bigger bin but thank you.

OP, have you specifically asked for another / bigger recycling bin - and not general waste?

Botanybaby · 16/02/2025 19:31

Why can't you take the kids to the tip too??

RebeccaRedhat · 16/02/2025 19:41

We didn't reach the criteria for a bigger wheelie bin, but I emailed and asked for it anyway, due to the volume of recycling we do. We got it.

SandieWooz · 16/02/2025 19:46

How often is your recycling and rubbish collected?
Ours is collected alternate weeks and food waste collected weekly.

GreenFields07 · 16/02/2025 19:49

We are a family of 5, our paper bin is also only collected once a month (like the rest of the country). We very rarely overflow, I don't understand how a 2 person household can be creating so much rubbish / recycling.
Maybe have a look at what youre buying and the packaging its in, id be rethinking certain items if they are creating so much rubbish.
Also, don't understand why you cant go to the tip with your DC sat in the car? Iv been to multiple tips and they all let you reverse right upto the bins. Its not like you'd be going miles and leaving them alone.

SisSuffragette · 16/02/2025 19:50

Unfortunately, it is fly tipping.
Can't you take the kids in the car to the tip once a week with a boot full of rubbish? We need to do this sometimes, particularly around christmas time

TunipTheVegimal24 · 16/02/2025 19:51

YANBU at all, but make sure you've got no bills or anything that identifies you in there as you can get fined.

Where I live, there aren't enough bin collections, and people just chuck bags of rubbish all over the place. Not public bins, just anywhere there's space. It's properly grim.

Achyarms · 16/02/2025 19:51

Is it recycling or landfill you have too much of?soft plastic goes to the supermarket
hard plastic in your recycling, if you have too much you can get an extra recycling bin

Relaxaholic · 16/02/2025 19:56

It’s fly tipping and it is antisocial. Just visit the tip on the weekend. Problem solved.

Hcs1985 · 16/02/2025 19:59

Our local council allows you to buy an extra recycling or general waste bin (they are relatively cheap £20ish) and are then collected as normal- would this be an option to explore?

RandomMess · 16/02/2025 20:02

@Relaxaholic how do you do that if you don't have a car? It's certain not affordable to have to pay for that service.

Agapornis · 16/02/2025 20:02

I used to work at a nature reserve run by a charity, where either staff or volunteers would empty the bins. There were two bins that were consistently used by a couple of people for household waste and cat litter. Super annoying.

If you're using public bins, at least make sure they're actually emptied by the council service whose only job is to empty bins. Total waste of time and money for charities and park services.

Tenthousandspoonsitslike · 16/02/2025 20:04

I occasionally do this, it’s never large amounts though and the bin is very close to my house

YourAzureEagle · 16/02/2025 20:05

If it gets to out of hand I just burn all the combustible stuff, a garden incinerator is your friend. just don't tell Greta Thundberg😀

Rubbish is collected every two weeks but the wheelie bin has been reduced to half the size. Green waste every week. Other recycling once a month.

Just go to the tip. We went today and left ds in the car whilst I dropped the stuff off. It literally took a 1 minute.

rubbwubb · 15/02/2025 07:49

Yes the public bins on the high street. I will take a small bag with me when I am out most days. I run out of space in my recycling bins too.

There are bins on the high street where paper and card can be recycled so I often put paper and card in there too. My paper bin only gets collected once a month so always gets overflowing as does my bin for plastics/glass/tins.

No wonder your bins are overflowing if the recycling is only collected monthly! That is completely rubbish.

We also have a little wheely bin which is collected fortnightly, but the recycling is collected is collected weekly, glass, tin, plastic, paper, card and food. I take my soft plastic recycling to the supermarket when I do a shop and there is very little left to go in the black bin.

My only advice would be to ask for extra recycling bins, squash as much as you can so you can fit as much in the bins as possible.
Soft plastic recycling made a very big difference to us and most supermarkets have a container, including co op (in small quantities) which are usually on high streets so perhaps more accessible to you.

And maybe campaign for more frequent recycling collections.

The hard plastics should be recyclable.

Would you feel able to share approximately where you were, in case there is anything the council can do that you haven't spotted.

Where I am, you can't get a bigger black bin but you can get extra recycling sacks and bigger recycling bins. So if you were able to recycle more (which it sounds like you might, from your description), this might alleviate your problem.

The co-op near me all do soft plastic recycling. I don't buy anything from them but I can drop things there anyway.

rubbwubb · 16/02/2025 20:25

I can't get extra recycling bins from the council. They will only allocate bigger general waste bins on the basis of certain criteria none of which I meet.

OP you don't have to ask permission on here!! Just put it in a bin and stop worrying about it.

Ask yourself why you feel the need to put yourself at the mercy of the bin-obsessed Mumsnet jury. This is not for them to decide and you're hardly committing murder are you?

I only used public bins that the council empties. I wouldn't use charity or nature reserves. I take my rubbish to supermarkets too. They tend to have big bins.
