To wear this dress for wedding?

Hi,

I got this dress from a boutique and got it fixed by a tailor because it kept bunching up at the bottom, apparently it’s because the lining was too short. I collected it today and it’s still bunching up, I can go back but I think last resort is to take it up but I prefer the length as is, is it a faux pas to wear this or can I get away with it? it looks ok head on but it’s when you’re looking at my left side it looks bunches at the hem. Kind of want to do something with it because it was €150, also I’ve already spent £65 on a hat to go with the dress so it would be a bit of a waste if I don’t wear it.

Thanks!

Op that looks really bad at the bottom, why didn’t you return it when you bought it?

Ph3 · 14/02/2025 20:42

I’m not a tailor but there is something wrong with it for sure. I would go back and have it fixed and wouldn’t wear it like this… if you ignore the bottom bit it looks lovely on you.

Peppermintcreamz · 14/02/2025 20:43

Store agreed to cover the alterations, I only collected it from the tailor today and tried it on and home

If you can't return it, is there any way of unpicking the lining at the bottom and then redoing the hem? Then the lining would just hang straight.

Gettingslimmer · 14/02/2025 20:44

I’d take it back to the tailor, or explain to the shop it didn’t work. The dress is clearly faulty, I’m sorry,

GoosieLucie · 14/02/2025 20:45

Oh dear. I'm really sorry but I think it might a little too small for you. It doesn't seem to fit correctly, so it's not hanging right.

5128gap · 14/02/2025 20:47

Honestly? It does look obvious. Can you just cut the lining away from the hem so it hangs like an underskirt?

RoastDinnerSmellsNice · 14/02/2025 20:48

Did you actually take it to a 'proper' tailor OP, or just someone you know who does a bit of sewing, as a 'proper' experienced tailor, should be able to fix that with no problems.

Toomuch2019 · 14/02/2025 20:50

I'm not a proper seamstress but it may be caused by the material not being cut on the the grain properly, in which case it will never properly be mended even if you keep going shorter, but I would have thought a tailor would have known this...

Yes a tailor in my town, did one of my bridesmaids dresses and it was fine and I usually get things taken up my them. I wonder if I should just get it taken up a couple inches? I’m not even sure if that would solve the problem.

I agree with this. It's not fitting right around your hips either. I think you should probably pick something else.

BoxOfCats · 14/02/2025 20:52

Honestly, I would take it back. You have a lovely figure but even without the bunching, I don't think this dress fits you particularly well.

MumonabikeE5 · 14/02/2025 20:52

Well that’s a shame. I think it is. Quite noticeable
why didn’t the tailor take it up? To make it good.
2 inches off the bottom would be fine

Apileofballyhoo · 14/02/2025 20:53

I'd detach the lining, but also complain to the shop.

RoastDinnerSmellsNice · 14/02/2025 20:53

The reason I asked was that I once took a coat to the dry cleaner's to get the sleeves shortened, as I thought they would do a professional job, and whilst I can sew, I didn't want the hassle at that particular time. When I collected it, they'd made a right dog's dinner of the sleeves and had even cut a hole in one of them - it was a BRAND NEW coat. So just bear in mind that not all tailors are as good as you'd like them to be.

Sorry if I sound dense, I’m not well versed in tailoring! But if we were to detach the lining, would this essentially render the dress see-through? So I’d need a slip?

That looks really odd. Is the fabric cut on the bias? Is the lining sewn all the way along the bottom of the hem?

I think the lining needs to be detached from the hem, and really what it needs is for the dress to be worn with a petticoat/slip. I don't think taking the dress up any further will help. You could risk recreating the same issue just two inches higher. Possibly a slit at the back would help. I just think the cut doesn't suit the fabric.

Thanks, it actually already has a slit at the back which is actually one of the reasons why I didn’t want to take it up further initially and opted to add more lining instead!

No, just unpick it at the bottom. I think I'd be getting the tailor to do it and then try on the dress with them right there.

Frostynoman · 14/02/2025 21:10

I don’t think it’s a lining issue. I’m not a seamstress but it looks like the fabric has been bagged out and as another has suggested, they haven’t cut the fabric correctly. This isn’t going to be salvageable so I would return to the shop - it isn’t repairable and shortening it alters the whole dress

TheLionandAlbert · 14/02/2025 21:13

The lining issue is bad, but it’s also really unflattering on your belly. I think it’s too small for you.

diddl · 14/02/2025 21:15

It doesn't look OK from the front I'm afraid.

It looks to be pulling to one side, the material looks baggy in one spot & from the pic of it hanging up the hem doesn't even look straight!

Sunnydiary · 14/02/2025 21:16

It looks too tight on you, despite your enviable figure.

The bunching looks like poor quality cutting. I definitely wouldn’t make it smaller.

I guess you can’t return it now you have had it altered?

Overtheatlantic · 14/02/2025 21:20

I agree that it’s a bit too small. You have a great figure but this dress isn’t working for it.

Kissedbyfire1 · 14/02/2025 21:31

It’s badly made, badly altered and doesn’t fit. I’m sorry but I think you need to ditch it and find an alternative.
