To wear this dress for wedding?

Hi,

I got this dress from a boutique and got it fixed by a tailor because it kept bunching up at the bottom, apparently it’s because the lining was too short. I collected it today and it’s still bunching up, I can go back but I think last resort is to take it up but I prefer the length as is, is it a faux pas to wear this or can I get away with it? it looks ok head on but it’s when you’re looking at my left side it looks bunches at the hem. Kind of want to do something with it because it was €150, also I’ve already spent £65 on a hat to go with the dress so it would be a bit of a waste if I don’t wear it.

Thanks!

The top is fine, but it’s pulling in the hip area, which probably means it’s not hanging properly. The hem looks longer on one side too.

SheridansPortSalut · 14/02/2025 21:55

Can you turn it inside out and take a picture so that we can see the lining and the hem?

Sure, please see attached. Thanks again, I’m determined to try and make it work some way as it’s a lot of money and I don’t think I can return it now I’ve had it altered :(

Maybe get some firm control underwear, a slip or shorts, I think if it fits better round your tummy and hips, it might sit better at the hem. It won’t ever be good, but might help. As it’s pulling up, and I mean this gently quite unflattering,

you could just cut the lining out, wear a control slip ?

Wordless · 14/02/2025 22:12

If the store agreed to pay for the alterations then they were admitting that it was not fit for purpose as sold. It is still not fit for purpose. Therefore you should return it and they should reimburse you.

Is it meant to have an asymmetrical hem? The two sides are different heights and on the hanger the right seam is straight whilst the left has a curve (as you look at it). I'd take it back. Either exchange it for another which you try on in the shop or for a refund.

It doesn't fit well either - the side seams are very distorted so it's pulling where it shouldn't be.

spotddog · 14/02/2025 22:20

I'm an experienced seamstress. May I ask if lining is sewed into seams with dress fabric?

spotddog · 14/02/2025 22:21

Or are they separate and attached at hem?

Laiste · 14/02/2025 22:22

It's not a good fit round you bum and tum OP.

Even if the fabric sat smoothly it would look a bit cheap as it's too tight.

You have a great figure - but this dress isn't right for you. I'd cut your loses and get rid and find a different dress.

k1233 · 14/02/2025 23:40

The lining can be detached from the hem and hemmed independently. It may ride up with that cut though. The issue isn't just the left side, its the entire hem. You can see it bunching where I've circled. Also the hip is sitting odd, but you may have slouched in that direction, i can't quite tell. Push for a replacement.

I think that the lining needs to be detached from the hem.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 15/02/2025 00:13

That is a gorgeous dress but the hemming is so very noticeable. I would request a refund.

Cillmantain123 · 15/02/2025 11:04

It looks like it wasn't cut out properly which means it never going to look right.
The bunching of fabric over your left hip looks bad.
Return to the store it's not fit for purpose

Update: Got it sorted by a new seamstress and I was really pleased and wore it (have blurred my face out!) 😁
