To want the subtitles on TV?

TourangaLeila · 14/02/2025 20:23

Husband just told me to turn them off because it spoils the programme.

I say it's better as we don't need to have the TV waaayyy up to be able to understand what happening.

Everyone mumbles on TV programmes these days.

Who is BU?

What did they say when you got your hearing checked? The odds are that it id not the mumbling/ accents and it is something to do with your hearing health

YABU, they’re annoying, I hate being able to read what is said before it’s actually said.

For some people, subtitles are a need, not a preference. There's a big difference.

Tumbleweed101 · 15/02/2025 08:25

Neither of you are unreasonable. Your Dh finds them annoying and spoils his viewing, you can’t hear so it spoils yours without. I think your dh needs to be the one to compromise though if you can’t hear well enough to follow the movie without them.

Then get hearing aids. Yes his preference trumps yours

Hearing aids don't miraculously restore hearing.

Preference doesn't trump need.

If you’re near an Everyman they’re expensive but always have subtitles showings almost every day. They also have proper sofas and waiter service, can’t go wrong!

Thanks. It seems we have four about 25-30 miles away in different directions. And you're right, they all have a subtitled showing within the next week.

What did they say when... This is such an embarrassing passive aggressive mumsnet cliche. How cringe for you. Do you realise some people can have hearing disabilities which can't be fixed? So would need the adaptation of subtitles. As if the clarification at a hearing test that it's hearing related not actors mumbling would be some kind of solution.

Dolphinnoises · 15/02/2025 08:31

If you can afford a sound bar they make it much easier to hear the voices over the background noise

If you have a diagnosis than adjustments would be reasonable to make and her DH would be out of order. If you are claiming the problem is with other people without checking your own health then you are the unreasonable one.

I am partially deaf. I have to have the subtitles on. DH used to hate them but obviously didn't complain. Now he has them on even when I'm not there as he doesn't even notice them. If you need them tell him to get over himself.

I grew up with deaf parents so they were always on and now I hate watching TV without them. My DH is just used to them now. Just don't look at them if you don't want to 🤷

TriangleLight · 15/02/2025 08:44

They are so annoying, YABU

not everyone mutters, this sounds like a hearing problem

Have you had your hearing checked?

And a decent soundbar might help if you don’t hand one already

Comeoutside · 15/02/2025 08:54

I have no hearing issues but I cannot keep up with a programme/film without subtitles. My brain just retains things like the characters names/places better when I see it rather than hear it.
That being said, I'm like that with everything. I need to see it or I'll get confused.
I started using subtitles when my eldest was a toddler as I read it can support speech and I've never turned them off again! So I can't help, but it's not just hearing that people use them for.

Boredlass · 15/02/2025 08:58

I have subtitles on for everything except quiz shows. DH doesn’t like it but we keep them on. You miss nothing with them on

HoraceCope · 15/02/2025 10:22

i was listening to the radio and there was an american guest, i had to stop and rewind so many times, he was speaking so quickly

I can't hear tv without them so a damn sight more annoying to miss three quarters of what's being said

Thanks. I’m aware what hearing aids do. If someone with a hearing problem hasn’t had a hearing test and isn’t pursuing hearing aids then subtitles off. Take action

Why should the subtitles be off because someone hasn't had a hearing test yet? You don't need to present your audiogram results to use subtitles. They're there for anyone who needs them, regardless of hearing levels.

There was a recent study showing how popular subtitles are amongst general populations, particularly younger viewers.

Tagyoureit · 15/02/2025 14:47

I've gotten used to having them on especially with talky dramas that have no idea how to control the volume on the background music!'

Even without, it's worth playing with the sound settings. I find Netflix needs subtitles the most, but when I set the sound to "clear" or something it's better.

Surely it is down to the hearing impaired person what aids they use? Whether that be hearing aids, signing, printed materials etc. You don't get to tell a person with a disability how they must manage their disability. Using subtitles is taking action. It enables them to watch TV, doesn't it?

Imagine being so ignorant and arrogant you think it is reasonable to deny someone access to something just because they don't use your preferred method of managing their condition. Wow.

A hearing test isn't a prerequisite to enabling subtitles.

Your comment 'Then get hearing aids' demonstrates you don't know what hearing aids do.

But subtitles ruin tv

Ddakji · 15/02/2025 18:31

The OP doesn’t actually say she has hearing issues, though, does she?

I’d get a sound bar or try some headphones that don’t mute the sound.

There are lots of comments suggesting that the OP does and therefore interfering with her needs caused by that isn’t on.

I have a fairly old crap TV and agree that dialogue is often mumbly. I know that if I either updated my TV or got a soundbar the problem would probably be fixed.

Read the OP's 2nd post.

However, subtitles are not just for people with hearing loss.
