Yesterday, Trump brings back plastic straws - "I'm sure the sharks munching their way through the ocean will just munch them."

'Bring back the plastic straws' was another declaration he signed yesterday with a flourish of his Sharpie pen, flanked by the usual obsequious officials and a bigly map of the Gulf of Mexico America (which is is now 'fact' according to his spokeswoman).

You see, the sharks are just there, happily munching along in the ocean, so they'll just bite through the plastic straws because they have very sharp teeth, after all.

People are getting so used to the freak show, this kind of thing doesn't even raise an eyebrow anymore. AIBU to wonder how America is going to ever regain any credibility? We have 4 more years of this!

It’s really easy if it’s written into law. In Wales all workplaces, charities, and public bodies must seperate recycling by law.

It’s not hard to put into law all public bins must have recycling- many in Wales do though obviously not all.

Every little step in the right direction helps.

Paper straws biodegrade within weeks. Plastic straws take thousands of years. It’s not hard to see why one is better than the other.

Sorry, I should have worded it better. Not disputing that overall, done right that paper straws etc are better.
Just in this moment in time, with the lack of what I mentioned in my first post, is there currently much difference.

I agree, done properly with all that stuff done prior, it would work well.
But we, along with many countries have a habit of making a sweeping declaration without ensuring the plans/logistics/regs are all squared away first.
Then it all ends up rushed/haphazard and ineffective.

Also some people can't drink with lips pursed with a cup or glass edge between them. Strokes (both the ability to swallow and hold drinking vessel), certain surgeries (not after tooth extraction as causes dry socket).

My late DGF's final two years with us, he had a stroke which made him unable to drink a cup/glass in the normal way.

So in that case, metal straws, or reusable silicone straws that are bendy, would be useful. In the case of swallowing difficulty, liquids are often thickened anyway.

Paper straws are definitely terrible. The US has perfectly nice compostable straws though that are very similar to plastic. I’m not sure what they’re made of but they are vastly better than plastic. If everywhere would use those instead of the paper ones then this really wouldn’t be necessary. Hmm I suppose the paper ones must be cheaper.

We spent a couple of weeks in a Mediterranean country last summer and many restaurants we ate at didn't provide large bottles of water. Because it was hot and we were thirsty, we went through four mini bottles each. That's 16 bottles for a family of four.
They might not have a Trump, but in their quiet way, many other countries couldn't care less about the environment either.

Are you saying you used plastic bottles of water? Madness. Here restaurants give you bottles and individual glasses, all made of glass.

Sounds ridiculous to me. I’m an American in my late thirties and I’ve never met a single person who does this.

Yeah I’ve lived in the US for decades now, multiple different regions, and I’ve never experienced that.

This is college dorm room stuff, definitely not the norm. Where are these weird stereotypes coming from?!

Well maybe if the lowest ebbs of society correctly appropriately disposed of rubbish it wouldn't end up in oceans

Begreatfulofglimmers · 15/02/2025 04:07

li can remember when paper was the issue and moved to plastic so we’d “stop cutting down the rain forest”

we are also fighting a loosing battle with Asia - every is plastic, then wrapped in plastic!

Trash in developed economies is generally well managed, so your plastic straw is not gonna go in some turtle’s nose.

It’s poor countries with shoddy waste management that do this, and you don’t have the power to stop their behaviors

Doesn't stop idiots leaving rubbish beaches and in parks and on streets etc.

mikado1 · 15/02/2025 04:17

Why are anyone's straws ending up I. The ocean? Is it because of rubbishing or, if we dispose of properly, are the animals safe from them?
I've also seen the plastic plate thing is America. While staying with a family they served up every meal for a week on plastic and just dumped in a bin bag each time. On the last night they said they would do a special dinner for us. All the China plates were out, the table set beautifully, and then the plastic plates were put on top!!

Maybe they only did that while you were a guest in their house idk but it’s not normal

I have an autistic kid who won’t use paper straws. I bought proper plastic pic Nic reusable straws and also the metal ones. They’re lasted quite a few years so far and still going strong. And easily fit in your bag so this really isn’t the issue you make it out to be.

Not all Sen children have autism. Some have physical disabilities. My adult DD with CP can’t manage silicon or metal straws because she can’t clamp her lips round them. Paper straws disintegrate due to the excess saliva that she can’t control. Plastic straws are the only ones she can manage. Show a little compassion for other people’s situations please.

WiddlinDiddlin · 15/02/2025 05:36

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 14/02/2025 15:02

Im supposed to carry metal straws around on the chance I buy her a carton of mango juice?

It is an issue and it's bloody annoying.

I mean you carry your phone, your purse, your car keys, various random bits and bobs in both handbag and car... I don't really see how a collapsible metal straw in a wee case is going to be the end of the world for you.

So buy your own silicon or plastic reusable straws, they come in multipacks with a little cleaning brush to fit.

No ones banning re-usable ones, just the disposable jobs!

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 14/02/2025 15:03

The reusable straws I've seen wouldn't fit into the drink carton anyway

Plus, if I'm buying a carton of juice, I've obviously needed one quickly to hydrate her

If I had the time to plan ahead, I'd just bring her water bottle

Reusable metal straws sat in the car - eww

You're stupid - HTH

I've got an idea that just might work. Don't use any straws ever!!

Also - Americans don't all eat their food off laminated dsiposable plates. What a load of old bollocks.

This whole thread is chockablock with entitled idiots - really. How did humanity cope in 1700 when there were no straws, no cans of fizzy drinks, no fast food full of shite??

Nettleteaser101 · 15/02/2025 05:45

Why go on about Trump . He has 4 years to go and you moaning about straws ain't gonna topple him. So fed up with people worring about a leader of another country it's so boring. Worry about more important stuff. Plastic straws isn't going to start WW3 or China isn't going to invade America with Russia because of plastic straws .

littleblackcat247 · 15/02/2025 05:50

I hate to let you know, but trash in developed economies as you put it is quite often shipped to developing countries and dumped. It is not well managed. So no - you can't blame other countries.

Paper straws have additives and chemicals in them and as such can't be recycled anyway and go in the general waste. They are no better than plastic ones tbh. Companies like McDonald's recycle their paper cups but the straws go in the general waste

Zanatdy · 15/02/2025 06:35

One thing that has shocked me from videos on instagram etc is the amount of American’s eating off paper plates. Here we are in the UK happily sorting our rubbish into recycling, trying to use less plastic when the US doesn’t care at all. It’s quite shocking really.

MissTrip82 · 15/02/2025 07:21

I mean you can see it’s popular.

I’m never sure why people are having such wide exposure to paper straws that they can be enraged by then. Surely a takeaway milkshake etc is an occasional treat, and one that many (not all) can enjoy without
a straw at all?
