Yesterday, Trump brings back plastic straws - "I'm sure the sharks munching their way through the ocean will just munch them."

'Bring back the plastic straws' was another declaration he signed yesterday with a flourish of his Sharpie pen, flanked by the usual obsequious officials and a bigly map of the Gulf of Mexico America (which is is now 'fact' according to his spokeswoman).

You see, the sharks are just there, happily munching along in the ocean, so they'll just bite through the plastic straws because they have very sharp teeth, after all.

People are getting so used to the freak show, this kind of thing doesn't even raise an eyebrow anymore. AIBU to wonder how America is going to ever regain any credibility? We have 4 more years of this!

I think Trump is an idiot and we are all going to have to grit our teeth and hope he manages to avoid bringing about Armageddon within the next four years. At least after that he can’t serve another term and we’ll be shot of him (I think?).
His attitude to global warming particularly scares me.
However I do think plastic straws are the least of our worries when it comes to global warming.
Paper straws are awful. I never finish my drink when I have to use one. If I’m having a McDonalds at home, I replace it with a reusable metal one.

RaininSummer · 14/02/2025 18:34

I don't know why any kind of straws are so prevalent. Can't people just drink their drinks.

There's loads of posts whining about paper straws being useless. Here's an idea - drink your crappy soda out of the cup. With a few reasonable exceptions, people can use cups.

I agree, metal straws should be banned along with all other dangerous pointed objects, like metal knives, forks, spoons, pens, skewers of any kind, chopsticks, etc. etc. It's amazing the number of potentially lethal objects I have in my kitchen alone!

No idea why you are being sarcastic about it. I wont give one to my 2 year old.

When we go out for coffee he often gets the smoothies in the triangle pouches with a paper straw. He cant get through half of it without ruining the straw. So then we go back to the counter and they kindly decant it into a baby chino cup with a plastic lid. So hes still using plastic. Now we just wasted two disposable items.

So yes I think its flipping ridiculous!

CrushingOnRubies · 14/02/2025 18:49

Going to a nice bar for a cocktail. Being served your cocktail with a lot of ice so hard to sip without a mouth full of ice. And the drink tasting of paper because of the paper straw. Which goes soggy in 5 minutes

soupyspoon · 14/02/2025 19:04

I dont like paper straws. The last time I bought plastic straws must have been over 5 years ago, we still have most of the packet. When they run out I will buy plastic again. I cant bear the texture of paper in my mouth and have difficulties holding cups and drinks so a straw is helpful for me

I wouldnt use a reusable metal or silicon one as I would struggle with the feel and I dont like the idea of how clean it would be (or not)

I dont like Trump either, he's mad really

I think that virtually every food video Ive seen on youtube or other channels involves disposable plates and cutlery if its american, Ive heard anecdotally that this is common

MelainesLaugh · 14/02/2025 19:06

TBF paper straws are useless so he has a point on that one

RingoJuice · 14/02/2025 19:09

This kind of plastic waste is not a big deal in countries with proper waste collection and management. So I don’t think we have to suffer using paper straws when those plastic ones are not actually get stuck in any creatures nostrils.

Like … if you don’t want to use a plastic straw, then don’t. Leave the rest of us alone.

soupyspoon · 14/02/2025 19:10

One of the issues really is that we need ways to melt down or burn plastic, safely, with filtering out of dangerous emissions, and use that rubbish for energy.

When I was in the US a few months ago, the hotel breakfasts that were included had more disposable plastic than you can shake a stick at. I was unimpressed but not surprised.

Lord knows why Trump wants to reintroduce plastic straws though.

Edited

We had the same at a hotel in NYC last year , could not believe the volume of waste generated every breakfast time. Mini cereal boxes, takeaway coffee cups, little yoghurt pots, juice in cartons, milk sachets, waffles in plastic wrappers. It was really noticeably different from a European hotel breakfast.

CrushingOnRubies · 14/02/2025 19:17

Not plastic straws but can I just say that we use polystyrene cups lot for science experiments at work and the cost has sky rocketed. Due to supply and demand. By all means ban them but then don't cut education funding and require polystyrene cups for experiments which are required for GCSE & a-level exams

ComeOnBabyLightMyFarts · 14/02/2025 19:17

Well, whatever you think of Trump, when he opens his mouth he is good for a laugh. On a gloomy day sometimes his inanities make me chuckle . Except that he is in charge of a large and powerful country which makes it more worrying than amusing.

At least he does know what a woman is, though. That's some kind of progress.

I just wonder sometimes, it does seem like women are the ones getting the shit end of the soggy paper straw here

Only if you’re married to a shit man who doesn’t concern himself with all of the things you listed concerning child care.

I'd love to know what was the catalyst for Trump signing this order. Did someone hand him a drink with a paper straw that went soggy and he thought "Absolutely Fucking Not" and immediately held a press conference? Or has he been harbouring a growing resentment for paper straws and decided that when he was next president he would make that one of the first things he did.

A ban on plastic products altogether? So baby bottles, toys, potties?

A ban on SINGLE use plastic yes.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 14/02/2025 19:52

Why do you even need straws at all? Confused

Deedeesharpwhatkindoflady · 14/02/2025 20:00

Or we could use our mouths to drink liquids and fuck the straw's off altogether.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 14/02/2025 20:03

RandomButtons · 14/02/2025 19:50

A ban on SINGLE use plastic yes.

The person I responded to said a ban on all plastics

Single use plastics are already banned or restricted to businesses for food hygiene purposes etc

OnSecondThoughts · 14/02/2025 20:04

Some of his other policies are not too bad, but this one sucks.

I don't know why any kind of straws are so prevalent. Can't people just drink their drinks.

Hospitality and leisure places use them as you drink soft drinks quicker through straws. More money for them
