Neighbour complaining about bins on my property

jodiemooo · 11/02/2025 17:51

Basically my next door neighbour was having her visitors park quite frequently on my driveway on multiple occasions.

When DH was at work she would also use our drive to reverse into her own drive etc on a daily basis.

I asked her very nicely if she could stop her visitors doing this as they were parking right outside my living room window with visitors looking straight in.

It carried on happening and I moved by bins to block any more parking.

Anyway with the windy weather etc she has been concerned about the bins falling onto her car and has asked me if I would move them.

I told her it was because of her visitors being inconsiderate that the bins are the there in the first place and of course her using our drive on a daily a basis to reverse.

I have told her the bins are there for a reason and won't be moved.
AIBU?

Your property, you can put your bins where you like. Your drive is not her visitor car park.

MyLimeGuide · 11/02/2025 17:58

Bloody neighbours! Is it a concrete shared driveway? Can you mark a line down the middle? YANBU

Literallynoonecares · 11/02/2025 18:00

Its difficult to visualise but I assume you have a shared driveway? Was she aware that her visitors are using your driveway to park? (I guess she does now because you have told her that is the reason the bins are there) What did she say when you told her?

But no, if she was aware they were parking there and did nothing about it then you can put your bins where you like.

YABU - If you've got a problem with people parking on your drive then discuss it with them, It's not your neighbours fault and she is not responsible for the behaviour of other adults.

I'm quite surprised that a neighbour reversing onto your drive for a few seconds bothers you though.

Do you always struggle with comprehension?

Urgh! It's you again.

Well I've not been on here for weeks and weeks. So glad I've made an impression

Can you put in some heavy planters or chain and post fence along the drive?

Madamecholetsbonnet · 11/02/2025 18:12

I’m sorry, I can’t see the diagram 😂

DustyLee123 · 11/02/2025 18:12

Tell her to piss off.

jodiemooo · 11/02/2025 18:21

It's not a shared driveway, it is clearly marked by the house numbers and divided.

When I told her about her visitors she walked off.

With her reversing onto the driveway, it was everyday and multiple times a day and now the bins are there she somehow manages OK to get into her drive.

My DH think that's the bins fall onto her car she will expect us to pay for the damage and thinks maybe we should move back them into the garden.

I think your DH is right, if your bins damage her car she will look to you for payment.

Speak to the visitors, direct, yourself. (nicely though, yes?). Honestly, the last thing on this earth you need is to get into arguments with your neighbour. It never ends well.

takealettermsjones · 11/02/2025 18:31

I think YANBU for not wanting others to park on your drive but I would secure your bins anyway - your DH is right, if they do damage her car then it would be your fault imo. For now can you just attach some bungee cords or something so they're all tethered to each other, and then to something at one end somehow? Gatepost etc? But long term, build a wall!

I'd put in something more permanent than the bins personally. Heavy so it won't fall, you can attach reflectors or use lighting so she can see it. If she's a bit of a piss taker anyway, I wouldn't put in past her to tip the bins on purpose and say they've damaged her property or hurt her. There's lots of options for nice pots or posts.

UndermyShoeJoe · 11/02/2025 18:36

Put a fence in or some big ass plant pots.

RawBloomers · 11/02/2025 18:38

DH may be right. Especially since she’s warned you about them, you may be liable for any damage they cause. (IANAL, though) Can you make sure they won’t blow in to her car?

Sounds like it's full moon for you 2 again. Or whatever time of the month it is

HauntedPencil · 11/02/2025 18:41

Actually it's pretty rude to reverse fully onto someone's driveway but I wouldn't mind for a super nice neighbour but I don't blame people for getting miffed. Parking is a proper piss take!

Vaxtable · 11/02/2025 18:43

I would move the bins, once I have had gates installed so she can’t reverse onto the drive and people can’t park on it, electric ones

Jiggedy · 11/02/2025 18:43

I'd rather have someone reverse on to my driveway every day than have my bins on it, presumably in some sort of a central position.

I wouldn't want random visitors parking on my drive though. Is it obvious that it's your drive?

ToKittyornottoKitty · 11/02/2025 18:43

If there is a risk of your bins damaging someone else’s property then yeah you should move them. Buy cones or something.

delvan · 11/02/2025 18:45

If the bins block visitors and random reversers, do you have to move them to park your own cars?

GabriellaMontez · 11/02/2025 18:45

Do your bins normally get blown over?

Its only ever been extreme weather that's moved ours.

I'd leave them. Yanbu.
