Do nice frozen mashed potatoes exist?

EmeraldApples · 11/02/2025 15:12

And if so where do I get them?

I always mean well with cooking shepherds pie but due to having arthritis in my wrists and being a bit of a crap cook... this is the bit I struggle with😬

No judgement please!

I've not seen any without added milk which is a challenge with milk allergies in the household

Plump82 · 11/02/2025 15:15

Could you buy the trays of mashed potato?

Alsonification · 11/02/2025 15:15

Only this week I've bought some in Tesco. Ingredients are literally potato, butter, milk & salt/pepper so I figured they would be ok. They taste lovely.

Just get the refrigerated ones?

TwatOnAHotTinRoof · 11/02/2025 15:19

I buy the Waitrose ones, I always have a bag in as an emergency stash. I think they’re good, they are frozen in little sausage shapes and you just cover them and bake in the oven, stirring them together with a bit of butter at the end.

MooDengsFatRolls · 11/02/2025 15:38

I also use the Waitrose ones, same ingredients as if I'd made it myself but just so bloody easy. The Sainsbury's one is also good.

MooDengsFatRolls · 11/02/2025 15:39

And please do not feel guilty about using it, you've got enough going on with arthritis that anything to make life easier should be embraced!

username299 · 11/02/2025 15:40

Do you have a stick blender? You can buy a mashed potato attachment.

These with added salted butter and a little dash of milk are lovely.

Add in some grated Gruyere and they're sublime 😁

I also think they're better than refrigerator ones... Those always taste a bit funky.

The M&S microwave packs of mashed potato are nice!

Bjorkdidit · 11/02/2025 15:41

I was also going say the fresh ones in M&S are nice. We often get them as part of a 'dine in' deal.

queenvelux · 11/02/2025 15:55

Aunt Bessie frozen mash is potatoes, milk and salt. Just like you would make at home. It's nice. Sometimes I add some extra butter, to make it even nicer!

olderbutwiser · 11/02/2025 16:00

I've tried several and love them all. I add more butter because I'm a glutton. I loathe making mashed potatoes, frozen means dh gets some of the foods he loves.

Theunamedcat · 11/02/2025 16:08

I always find them a bit heavy so I let them defrost and add a bit of milk

HRTQueen · 11/02/2025 16:12

Only one I think is worth buying is M&S and their fresh one is good too

frozen carrot and swede is very good as an alternative for some dishes and nicer that frozen mash potato

That's exactly what I do . I love Aunt Bessie's

HRTQueen · 11/02/2025 16:13

and I always add a bit of milk and butter to ready made mash, warm the milk up first it then doesn't go all starchy

Mummylovesmonkeys · 11/02/2025 16:25

I second the Tesco ones - I always have a bag in the freezer. Life is too short to peel taters!🌞

TulipTuesday · 11/02/2025 16:36

I always use frozen mash on shepherds pie. I found that my own mashed potatoes would sink so I gave frozen mash a go and have never looked back.
The Tesco ones are superior to others I’ve tried.

Can't remember the last time I made my own mash. Most of the frozen supermarket ones are absolutely fine - add some milk/butter of your own for extra deliciousness. Takes a few mins in the microwave and no faffing or lumpy mash!

This is what we use but I find recently that the taste has changed a bit and it’s more like Smash/powdered mash - I need to add salt, butter and a bit of cream.

Also - why the bloomin heck did they change from the bigger round discs to tiny little cubes!!! A pain in the bum counting them out - 1st world problems lol

riverislandjeans · 11/02/2025 16:45

A Tesco recommendation for the Tesco ones! I also add a little of my own milk half way through microwaving

jackstini · 11/02/2025 16:46

Tesco here too
So worth it for non-aching wrists!

Isseywith2witchycats · 11/02/2025 16:49

I get the cathedral cheesy mash from Iceland like other people I add some butter to it while heating
