Do nice frozen mashed potatoes exist?

And if so where do I get them?

I always mean well with cooking shepherds pie but due to having arthritis in my wrists and being a bit of a crap cook... this is the bit I struggle with😬

No judgement please!

Sainsbury's is fine, add a knob of butter.
I hate making mash potatoes and if I find even a small lump it makes me want to retch.

DH said my home made mashed potato was much nicer than any of the bought ones we tried.
Heat up with a bit of butter after it's defrosted.
Maybe ask someone to mash a batch to freeze?

GRCP · 11/02/2025 17:12

Get the refrigerated trays of mash - they're lovely (and you can freeze them)

YourWinter · 11/02/2025 17:16

I always have frozen mash, usually from Morrisons or Waitrose. The only one I didn’t like as much was the Aldi one, though I’m not sure what was different.

I wondered if Morrisons had reduced the size of the pieces because I used to use 10 for a single helping and now its usually 12.

TeapotCollection · 11/02/2025 17:27

Not frozen but Idahoan packet mash is bloody lovely 😋

Heronwatcher · 11/02/2025 17:28

The one from COOK was amazing! Far better than mine (I’m not a bad cook but these were something else).

I have heard that baking potatoes for ages and then just scooping out the middles works too.

Mynewnameis · 11/02/2025 17:29

I use the Tesco one. Add extra milk.

Do you have a stick blender? You can buy a mashed potato attachment.

but first you would have to peel them ?!

Can't remember the last time I made my own mash. Most of the frozen supermarket ones are absolutely fine - add some milk/butter of your own for extra deliciousness. Takes a few mins in the microwave and no faffing or lumpy mash!

Agreed! I don't understand when people say that home made tastes better or that none of them taste good it's literally the same ingredients as I'd use if I were peeling the potatoes and mashing them at home. Life's too short to mash potatoes.

I came on to say this - not to use so much wter, we go up to 400
also buy from Amazon when its available at £1 not £1.50 as it has escalated
to now! so we buy in bulk

Topseyt123 · 11/02/2025 17:34

We often have the Tesco one. It's nice, especially if you add a bit more butter, salt and pepper as it cooks.

I've also had Aldi ones, which were fine too. I also added butter, salt and pepper of my own.

We've had co-op ones too, which were surprisingly good.

You can buy peeled potatoes but mash with skins is nice.

Escapaid · 11/02/2025 17:43

Another vote for the Tesco ones. Delicious and no need to add anything.

Needmorelego · 11/02/2025 17:51

I get mine from Iceland. I always add butter (well marg) and cheese.
Yummy 😋

Zanzara · 11/02/2025 17:54

Aldi used to do one, that was nice.

I find adding a spoonful of Maille Dijon mustard to any mashed potato cheers it up no end.

Otherwise OP I buy a big M&S cottage pie when they have them in and keep it in the freezer for a standby. Before putting it in the oven I cover the top with some of their extra mature cheddar cheese, grated, (the large blocks especially are terrific value), and a few fat slices of tomato. Delicious, and not much work (you could buy ready grated cheese for ease).

ChristmasFluff · 11/02/2025 18:08

Another Tesco vote - I add a bit of butter after microwaving. I prefer it to my own!

CurlewKate · 11/02/2025 18:16

I think the Idaho dried stuff is much nicer than any frozen I've tried. But I have an attachment for my stick blender that makes incredible mash.

Portakalkedi · 11/02/2025 18:20

Agree with Idaho mash in packets, it's lovely, just add boiling water. Much nicer than how I remember Smash

HauntedPencil · 11/02/2025 18:31

Idaho mash is actually very tasty in a pinch.

Bjorkdidit · 12/02/2025 03:45

I don't like the Idaho one, I did like Sainsburys own brand but it's changed from powder to flakes and its not as nice. I'm going to investigate frozen mash next time I need it.
