Do I go to walk in/a&e?

I've got a throat infection of some sort - it has absolutely floored me I've mostly been in bed since Tuesday last week. I got antibiotics from the doctor on Friday because my throat was covered in white (I have no tonsils but feels the same as bad tonsillitis which I used to get often until I had them out 15 years ago)
My temperature has not gone down the whole time even with taking Paracetamol and Ibuprofen, it's consistently been around high 38 and today is 39.4. This morning I've woken up with a rash covering my entire body but not my face. What do I do?

Ring 111 for an out of hours GP appointment or go to minor injuries.

shoofly · 09/02/2025 10:31

Out of hours appointment in first instance

LIZS · 09/02/2025 10:31

Call 111, there ma be gp n call to advise

InfoSecInTheCity · 09/02/2025 10:32

Call 111 if they think you need to be seen they can sometimes make an appt at a local out of hours, otherwise they have GPs who can diagnose by phone based on symptoms.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 09/02/2025 10:32

Phone 111

TourangaLeila · 09/02/2025 10:33

Sounds like scarlet fever and you maybe need some different antibiotics. Out of hours GP op.

DDivaStar · 09/02/2025 10:36

Def call 111.

Realistically you've only just started the antibiotics but thet can advise abd arrange a appointment for the rash. Better not to go to a crowded setting if you maybe contagious.

I've googled this but my raah is lighter in colour and I don't have a white tongue or a red face. So odd. I'll try and call 111.

I'm not sure it's an accident or emergency so 111 is best for now

Halycon · 09/02/2025 11:16

Definitely not A+E.

OpenFox · 09/02/2025 11:17

It is neither an accident nor an emergency at this point in time so call 111 for an out of hours GP appointment.

biscuitsandbooks · 09/02/2025 11:18

It's not an emergency but you should get an OOH appointment.

IThoughtHeWasWithYou · 09/02/2025 11:22

OOH or walk in. It’s not an A&E level unless you develop other symptoms such as breathing difficulties, pains or problems swallowing.

Which antibiotic is it?
Have you taken this antibiotic before with no side effects?

The other thing it could be is a reaction to the antibiotic. 111 should be able to help getting an OOH appointment.

Emmadaily · 09/02/2025 11:23

Yes I 11 is the best you can do for now.
Hopefully you feel much better soon
Sounds nasty.
Just thought, you may have an intolerance to Anti biotics though obviously I don't know but you need to be checked out

DoAWheelie · 09/02/2025 11:28

You need to find out if the rash is part of your illness or a reaction to the antibiotics. I'd call 111 but they may send you to A&E directly.

If you get any swelling in your face/lips/throat go directly to A&E as that indicates an allergic reaction that needs seeing right away.

MsPug · 09/02/2025 11:30

I had a very bad chest infection once years ago and it gave me a rash as you describe, it was a viral rash the dr said. Now every time I get a virus I get a rash! Weird

Yeah I've had this one a few times, no issues. Never had an allergic reaction to anything in my life.

I called 111 they are getting me a callback within 3 hours and I've had to submit a photo of the rash.

That’s reassuring and makes it more probable that this is related to the illness and not the treatment.

Shakeyourbaublesandsmile · 09/02/2025 11:35

There is no accident or immediate threat to life/life changing if not treated so NO AnE fgs

request review by whoever prescribed antibiotics and you haven’t been taking them that long

Snowmanscarf · 09/02/2025 11:39

My dh developed a rash on his body from head to feet - went to gp and it was an allergic reaction to the new drug he was taking.

TaggieO · 09/02/2025 11:45

DS had a reaction to an antibiotic at Christmas that he has had several times previously so you can still have a reaction to them. I wouldn’t expect that to come with a fever though? Does the rash blanche when you press on it? You will have a very, very long wait in A&E and if you are run down will more than likely catch something else so I would suggest trying to get an urgent OOH GP appointment or go to walk in centre. 111 should be able to refer you to one. It does sound like you need seeing though.

Mseddy · 09/02/2025 11:45

To all saying it's not an accident or an emergency. 111 sent me to a&e, in fact they tried to send me an ambulance which I declined, for the same thing. Started antibiotics for tonsillitis, 24 hours later high temps, worsening of throat symptoms, aching all over. The 111 medic said it was either sepsis or a reaction to the antibiotics and I needed seen. I ended up in hospital on IV antibiotics and IV fluids with complications from the tonsillitis. Only you know how poorly you are op.

pearbottomjeans · 09/02/2025 11:47

In our area you’d call 111 and get an OOH GP appt (right next door to A&E) or sent to minor injuries even though it’s not really an injury. Hope you feel better soon!
