Seven days to detox my liver ..

btphone · 07/02/2025 18:46

I have an ultrasound next week , and am concerned that due to a couple of heavy, fatty meals along with plenty of alcohol for celebratory nights out , my liver will show itself to be inflamed or worse , damaged. I do t want to postpone the ultrasound.
Is it possible to detox or help detox this organ in a Week and if so, how please?

If you're drinking enough to think that a scan could show liver damage, a week of abstinence isn't going to do anything - and if you are drinking that much, stopping abruptly could make you critically ill.

QuestionableMouse · 07/02/2025 18:48

Nothing you can do in a week is going to make a difference. If a small amount of alcohol and fatty food makes your liver inflamed then it'll be a good thing if it gets spotted.

ScupperedbytheSea · 07/02/2025 18:52

Don't drink alcohol and drink plenty of water. That's all you need.
Anyone peddling some magic 'liver detox' is talking shite.

reesiespieces · 07/02/2025 18:52

No.

If your liver is working then it is detoxing - that is its job. If it's not then giving it a few days off isn't really going to change anything. If you have a serious alcohol issue don't suddenly cut down your alcohol it can be very dangerous.

Go to the scan and take your doctor's advice.

Benjibas · 07/02/2025 18:54

Coffee is good for livers. No alcohol obviously. Water, lemon juice. I think you help a bit in a week.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 07/02/2025 18:55

Slimfast diet to shrink your liver

It's usually done before stomach surgery (weight loss and others)

5 x slimfast drinks a day
1 pot of jelly
One stock cube in water for your salty drink

No sugar or other food. Sweeteners in tea, and sugar free fizzy drinks allowed

xx

A few nights out will not harm the average liver, else the human race would have been kaput a long while back.

Have the scan and if have a real problem they’ll tell you, but nothing you say suggests that.

Yup

Why have you been referred for ultrasound of the liver? Please don't even consider cancelling it. My friend was referred following markers on a blood test. Thank god she went as they found a tiny encapsulated tumour which was at the early stage and has been treated.

btphone · 07/02/2025 19:11

No alcohol 🍺 issue just a week of celebration dinners and drinks and now a cancellation for abdominal ultrasound for possible gallstones. It was meant to be in two months time I have a history of hepatitis A twice when I was younger and am just a little worried .

I like Milk thistle from the qualified naturopath for liver support.

UninterestingFirstPost · 07/02/2025 19:28

If a normal level of celebrating and a few drinks can show up damage, it’s also useful for you to know, so I wouldn’t change your lifestyle drastically before the test. (Not that you can detox a liver any better than it can itself)

btphone · 07/02/2025 19:28

Why would anyone want to shrink their liver ? I've never heard of that!

WickWood · 07/02/2025 19:37

I had a scan recently to confirm gallstones, they didn't comment on the state of my liver at all (I don't drink any alcohol but didn't eat the healthiest foods prediagnosis!)

Short term a few big meals and extra alchohol won't cause damage and likewise there are no dietary changes needed to " fix " this. The scan will look for gallstones and any obstructions . No need to cancel this .

delvan · 07/02/2025 19:49

The worried well.

It's a large organ, shrink it so it isn't accidentally damaged during other surgery. I wouldn't use a slimfast diet tho as I have no knowledge of thatt

Florally · 07/02/2025 19:54

My friend did a liver shrinking diet. I’d double check because I might be wrong but it was something like a glass of milk for breakfast and than a stock cube drink for lunch and dinner.

Tourmalines · 07/02/2025 19:57

Well if your liver is damaged surely you would want to know ? But anyway , there is no magic detox . That’s all just hyped up marketing campaigns. Just cut out all the shit you eat and drink and the liver will detox itself . Lots of water too .

butterfly0404 · 07/02/2025 20:07

I had a scan for suspected gallstones last year. No gallstones but did find I had Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver disease , as a result I've made lifestyle changes and lost 4 stone, refuced alcohol consumption and I've put my liver back to good health.

Just go to the appointment and don't do any stupid fad 'detox' as it won't make any difference. Good luck and hope all is OK x

Booboobagins · 07/02/2025 20:16

@btphone your liver may have been affected by hepatitis, so honestly I'd say be cautious any way.

Not wanting to sound macabre, but my hubby died of liver failure following 2 years of antibiotics to treat mrsa. You don't want to die that way, it's awful.

Take lemon juice in water every day, as much as you can. Avoid fried food but eat a balanced diet. Please take care, OK x

Unfortunately this is true.

This is supposed to be done under medical supervision if you are obese before abdominal surgery - as fatty liver is common and can make the surgery more complicated as it is a larger liver.
It was poor advice to your question and I recommend not following it. Your liver naturally detoxes, you will be ok

btphone · 07/02/2025 20:48

Thanks. I was beginning to get freaked out tbh.

should you be drinking? If you have gallstones and have had Hep A twice?
