To think people without kids who use parent and baby spaces are just lazy and selfish!

local Tesco and nearly every single week I have a run in with someone over this. I am 7 months pregnant and have a 1.5 year old. For me it’s not even about the walking, it’s the extra space at the sides so that i can get the baby in the trolly/pram at the side of the car rather than at the boot where there’s traffic.

i don’t mind if there’s older people who clearly are struggling with mobility but fit, healthy people who park there and not a child in sight. A car actually cut the one way system a few days ago to park in the last mother and baby spot. Was a man on his own, plenty of other spaces in the car park. I wouldn’t even park in them if I don’t have my baby with me. I just think it’s so lazy and selfish.

It is not against the law for a BB holder to use a P&C space, displaying their badge. Do not give out false information.

RavenclawWitchy · 07/02/2025 09:53

My daughter (9) has a blue badge. However we will always use P&C spaces over disabled spaces if they are available as her disability is not a physical one but severe mental impairment (think 18 month old in a nine year old's body) and the P&C spaces are usually nearer a safe walkway. I have been "confronted" a few times by people with babies and toddlers for parking in P&C with an older child but I honestly don't give a shit.

rwalker · 07/02/2025 09:54

Never used them found it easier to park further away near trolley parks in carpark

only once gave I struggled as couldn’t get the door open so reversed out. No biggy

Parking spaces aren’t fit for purpose.

They have been that ridiculously small size for decades and decades.

Like most things in this country, it doesn’t keep up with the times.

No, it’s not that parking spaces are too small, it’s that cars are ridiculously and unnecessarily big these days.

Like a PP I have also used a parent and child space in the evening when the P & C area was virtually deserted. Disgusting excuse for a human being that I am.

Sunat45degrees · 07/02/2025 09:57

We used to go to our local david lloyd gym. The car park was quite big but the spaces were mostly quite small so for anyone with a baby, the 3 baby and child spaces were a godsend.

I once had a run in with a man in a porsche. He pulled into one as I was walking past. I pointed out it was a baby and child space and he shouted at me, with this truly horrified lok on his face, "but where else should I park so my car doesn't get scratched?" It was ridiculous and funny in equal measure.

Sirzy · 07/02/2025 09:57

There are no laws at all with regards to P and C spaces because they are not a legally enforceable thing.

People with blue badges can park in a lot more places (within the terms of the badge). Parking in a P and C space is certainly permitted.

people with disabilities NEED those spaces to be able to go out. For those with young children they are just handy.

blackbirdsingingoutside · 07/02/2025 09:24

Yay another thread that will devolve into bashing people with disabilities.

All with faux big eyed questioning, but why do they need their own parking spaces? But why can't I use the disabled loo when there is a queue for the ladies? I'll be ever so quick, but why do they take priority on the bus? Life outside their own bubble really is a puzzle to some.

Crocsake · 07/02/2025 09:59

You'll get blasted on here but I agree with you. It's use people who appear young and healthy that use those spaces in my opinion. My own boss parks in them and he's a competitive runner. But also lazy as fuck.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

against the law to use a Parent and Child space.

😂 😂😂😂😂😂

What planet do you live on??

Proudofitbabe · 07/02/2025 10:00

I agree it's really frustrating as you need the extra width, but so close to the shop there will always be non-parents nipping into them for whatever reason. Annoying but never had a run-in over it, I'd expect to be told to do one tbh.
Wish they'd just move the P&C spaces further away, competition closed!

Butterflyfern · 07/02/2025 08:55

Tbh I'd be happy if they put p&c spaces at the back of the car park. It would discourage the entitled lazy arses, provide more space for disabled parking and it's the extra space that's valuable, not the distance to store

Totally agree with this

isitapipedream · 07/02/2025 10:01

I agree totally

no, cars have got ridiculously large.

Sheeparelooseagain · 07/02/2025 10:04

Even in this thread people say they use P&C spaces when the disabled ones are full - which I fully agree with to be clear, but is against the law unless you have a child under 12.

No it isn't against the law.

Mummer123 · 07/02/2025 10:05

Sheeparelooseagain · 07/02/2025 08:58

Some people will be using them because they have their own mobility difficulties and are going about their day the best they can.

I’m not talking about people like that. It’s people who are very clearly just lazy and bounce into the shops with no care or consideration for parents who need the space to get their children out of the car safely

Obviously not one that Google works on 😂 first search results said the following...

While it's not illegal to park in a parent and child parking space without a child in the UK, you could receive a Parking Charge Notice (PCN).

Mummer123 · 07/02/2025 10:06

Also fully agree BB holders should take priority. It’s not about the distance to the shop as some others have pointed out, it’s the space.

You can’t tell by looking at someone what is going on in their body or in their life.

perhaps instead of getting into arguments with strangers just park where there is a space?

An argument

Sorry I’m Irish, it’s a common phrase here to mean an argument

obviously but the realist in me doubts that most people without kids (apart from BB holders) have all these mobility issues. The irony is there are spaces about 3 bays down.

Even small hatchbacks are wider than they used to be, I think because of safety things built into the car (I am not a car expert!).
My mum couldn’t park her small hatchback in the side driveway of her 1930s house, when she used to be able to park a saloon car there.

Parratha · 07/02/2025 10:12

YABU. I use them when there are no other spaces. I drive a wide campervan and spaces are too tight (it's been bashed before).

Snorlaxo · 07/02/2025 10:12

There are some lazy people who want to protect their car’s paintwork but I think that there are some genuine situations where it’s ok.
People driving those who are temporarily incapacitated (eg passenger on crutches)
Late at night and car park isn’t well lit
BB spaces are full
People waiting for BB decision
Pregnant women
I find it odd that many P&C Spaces go up to age 12. How many secondary school kids can’t do: undo a seatbelt and get in and out of the car ? In real life I see 7ish year olds do this easily.
