To wonder why all girls have long hair?

Mightymoog · 06/02/2025 15:27

Just driving past the secondary school at home time and every single girl had long hair. Different colours, some wavy, some straight, but every last one of them had long hair.
Where are all the short cuts or even mid length.
when I was at school (admittedly many moons ago )there was a huge range from short and spiky to mid length bobs to long.
just a little something I've been musing on for a while and prepared for people to tell me the local school is an aberration of long hair lovers

Now,see, to me short hair equals pixie. I don’t see bobs as short and even a short jaw length bob doesn’t look masculine. And just below the shoulders certainly isn’t short.

I'm pretty sure that the haircuts the OP was referring to as long were of the bra strap length or longer variety, not just anything longer than a pixie cut.

If we're not even including bobs as being short then girls haven't had short hair for decades.

We had Vosene shampoo ( or the occasional sachet of Sta-Blond, even if you didn’t have blonde hair 😂) plus lots of brushing. She probably just had good hair.
Split ends were a nightmare though; in sixth form
many of us carried manicure scissors in our pencil
cases and would hunt split ends when the teacher turned to the board.

I remember an advert in the 70s for shampoo that actually claimed to mend split ends. Absolute bollocks of course and they wouldn’t be allowed to say it now.

Twaddlepip · 06/02/2025 20:20

Why should they cut their hair off? Long hair is the natural state. Hair grows.

Lionduck · 06/02/2025 20:23

Thornybush · 06/02/2025 15:47

I would guess because they feel that long hair is much nicer and more feminine.

Oh fuck off

Only on girls though?

would you use that argument for boys having long hair?

Lovebirdslovetea · 06/02/2025 20:28

Trends. They’re all like clones and look the same. Currently the style is neutral colours and clothes that I would say belong on men as they’re shapeless

QueenOfThorns · 06/02/2025 21:22

Some very strange, aggressive responses on this thread Confused

I think this is a very valid observation - my daily commute takes me past multiple secondary schools and I have also noticed the sameness of the hair on all the girls. It’s been that way for years. The same is true for female footballers.

I don’t know the reason for this, but reading some of the comments that seem to imply that only long hair is feminine and it’s the only way to look good has made me both sad and angry for today’s girls and young women Sad

Growlybear83 · 06/02/2025 21:35

@Whycanineverthinkofone I would definitely use that argument for boys and men. It's very rare that I've ever found a man with short hair attractive. I never had a boyfriend with short hair, and my husband has always had relatively long hair.

Because nearly 40% of pupils are of ethnic backgrounds and families that practice the culture and beliefs typically in contrast with western values of personal freedom, questioning, personal body autonomy or self expression, particularly for females. They are children growing up in homes and communities that expect "feminine" and submissive behavior from females, and remaining under male control, along with other things we've been fighting against for the past 150 years. Plenty of exceptions but on broad population level correct. In some of them, a woman cutting her hair, having a mohikan, or even having a pixie cut will be prresenting as in their view "masculine" and probably gay and will make all the women in the family umarriageable.
That's the difference compared to 40 or 50 years ago, the make up of the population and their beliefs, that we gladly respect.
Then also the whole trans ideology and platforms for mysoginsits too.

maybe, but the school I'm talking about is roughly 90% white.
I guess they still follow the trend of the wider population though and sm

I think we were obsessed with wrecking our hair years ago. Lots of perms and box dyes, then we’d hack it off and regrow it. Nowadays girls know how to care for their hair and it shows. Beautiful, glossy locks and well applied make up. Can’t believe what a mess I was at the same age.

AuntieObnoxious · 06/02/2025 22:37

My ds 17 has long hair and dd 15 has a very short pixie cut

Screamingabdabz · 06/02/2025 22:41

Fashion
low maintenance
feminine
to fit in

I think ‘easy’ fashions stay a lot longer these days even if it’s probably time for the trend to move on. People like easy and convenient. It fits the gen z worldview.

Whu · 06/02/2025 22:51

Back when I was at school there were a few of us ‘tomboys’ with short, boyish cuts.
Now we would be likely labelled as trans!!
Far less freedoms these days for young people - such conforming gender norms to adhere to.

The comments made by teachers were not inappropriate at all. My daughter had a lovely relationship with her teachers and the comments made to her and us ( her parents) were complimentary and part of the social interaction between us. We didn't take offence or find it inappropriate and neither did dd.

Re my boring comment: I can find whatever I like boring. Personally I prefer to see individualism but of course I would not comment outwardly to anyone concerned.

No, it’s not really appropriate for teachers to be commenting/complimenting pupils on their hair or appearance beyond whether it’s appropriate for school or not. I am not suggesting it is sexual just that it does not need to be done. Girls, in particular, don’t need judgement passed on their appearance in this way at school by teachers.

Maybe it’s just me but I never look at a group of people and think you are boring to look at. I can’t imagine judging a whole cohort in such a way especially children.

FairPanda · 06/02/2025 23:31

It's just hairstyle and fashion, don't read too much into it.

I don't like short hair as it falls everywhere and you can't tie it.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 07/02/2025 06:43

They like to look identical. There were trends when I was a teenager but we didn't all look alike.
We did. Whenever I look back at old photos from the 90's, large group of teenage girls.
Similar clothes, same hairstyle, high ponytail and big hairspray hump bump, ton of hairspray and hoop earrings.
The 90's working-class look.

Sailorchick14 · 07/02/2025 07:01

The girls have long hair thing really annoys me.

My eldest dd hates long hair and had her hair cut to a very short pixie at about 8 years old. She loved that length. It really suited her too.

She's recently grown it out to a short bob as at age 11 she got fed up of all the people assuming she was a boy. She's even been told off by a teacher at school for being in wrong toilets!

We've had lots of tears as she wants her short hair cut again but she can't handle the comments anymore so she's very conflicted.

The girls definitely don't all have long hair at my son's (secondary) school. Shock, horror, the boys don't all have short hair either. 😆

Well applied make up? Layers of masks more like. Often far too much for every day life.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 07/02/2025 07:06

As a younger child 8/9 the bowl style was in fashion.
I hated that hairstyle and felt like a boy.
There is a family photograph, 2 boy's 3 girl's, we all have the same bowl shape cut.

There is a lot more makeup on from contouring etc these days, but it looks much better.
As a teenager i wore pan stik with an orange tone with blue eyeshadow. Cringe.

hazelnutvanillalatte · 07/02/2025 07:13

I have always had long hair. As a child I was often pressured to cut it short with a fringe. My mother also always had long hair, as did one of her friends, who was told it didn't look 'professional' and she should cut it to be taken seriously.

I like my long hair. It's very tightly curled naturally but I wear it long and straight and have done since I was about 12.

I think there's definitely been questionable make up over the years, but I hate this overdone full face film premiere make up as an everyday look.

Long hair looks so much nicer and more feminine on girls. This is a personal opinion that not everyone is required to agree with but clearly many do these days.

Goodness, remind me what century we are living in? Why do girls have to look "nicer and more feminine"?
