To wonder why all girls have long hair?

Mightymoog · 06/02/2025 15:27

Just driving past the secondary school at home time and every single girl had long hair. Different colours, some wavy, some straight, but every last one of them had long hair.
Where are all the short cuts or even mid length.
when I was at school (admittedly many moons ago )there was a huge range from short and spiky to mid length bobs to long.
just a little something I've been musing on for a while and prepared for people to tell me the local school is an aberration of long hair lovers

No! That still makes no sense.

The only way it could have some resemblance of a logical question would be to say : Am I being unreasonable to wonder why most the girls of the school xyz have long hair ? (Let's face it. I doubt it you saw each one of them, so "most of" will have to do).

But it still would be quite a pointless thread. Because there is only one potential answer! Yes, you are unreasonable to wonder why, because it is so obvious!!!
Because they like it! Simples.

Honestly OP, probably best you ask the admins to delete the thread.

Edited

So despite the fact that there are loads of people on this thread joining in the discussion because YOU and maybe 2 other bizarrely angry people think the question is pointless the op should delete the thread? Really? You think every thread on a forum this big should be something that engaged you personally?

You do realise that the obvious thing to do when you think a thread is a bit daft or pointless is to just not bother with it?

My daughter and all her friends have long hair plus they all wear north face jackets, adidas trainers and joggers. They like to look identical. There were trends when I was a teenager but we didn't all look alike. As pp say it's probably influencers / love Island / Tik tok etc etc influencing the looks.

InDogweRust · 06/02/2025 18:45

It shifts

In my daughters class (she's younger) cute bobs are all the rage

among the 9/10 year olds there's quite a few with short hair.

lifeonmars100 · 06/02/2025 18:49

I have noticed this trend and it is not confined to school girls, most females up to around age 45 seem to have long hair too. My hair only grows to my shoulders and even at that length starts to become frizzy and whispy so I would never have managed the Rapunzel like tresses I see frequently. Glad it wasn't the fashion when I was young, I would not have been able to follow it

Pat888 · 06/02/2025 18:53

Beautiful long hair doesn’t necessarily flatter the face.

Obviously everyone has the right to style their hair as they wish, but I do find the homogenous appearance of all girls and young women wrt their hair a bit boring. Some variation would be nice

Why do girls have to look interesting for other people? If the want to look homogenous and boring (in your option) then that is up to them. If society is forcing them to, as other PPs have alluded to, then that definitely need to be called out.

And I don’t think it is a good thing that teachers are commenting on your daughter’s hairstyle, unless it is to say that it is in some way inappropriate for school.

The comments made by teachers were not inappropriate at all. My daughter had a lovely relationship with her teachers and the comments made to her and us ( her parents) were complimentary and part of the social interaction between us. We didn't take offence or find it inappropriate and neither did dd.

Re my boring comment: I can find whatever I like boring. Personally I prefer to see individualism but of course I would not comment outwardly to anyone concerned.

no, but if you're feeling insecure you can drape it over your face like cousin it!

Same reason the boys all have that curly mop llama hair! Fashion😆 in school in the noughties, my school anyway, it was long straight hair, always down never tied up. In PE you had to tie it so the "cool" girls would just tie a hair band about 3 inches from the bottom of their hair so it still looked down from the front 😂

If there was only one potential answer then we wouldn’t have got to 12 pages of discussion.

no one makes a decision in a vacuum. We are all influenced by external factors.

so it’s not simples! If we all genuinely just did, wore, and behaved how we liked the world would be a very different place.

why do you do anything? It’s usually because it’s what you were taught or learned somewhere along the line. We haven’t all just pulled out life choices out of nowhere.

don’t jump to the obvious, use your brain a bit.

sixties babe here; no shower, washed hair in the basin with a mug snd a kettle of hot water. No hair dryer. We still all had long hair . With flowers in, ready for San Francisco 🥰

I've been watching loads of videos about Marianne Faithfull on YouTube since her death was announced last week and her hair was glorious especially during her days of early fame in the 60's. I did start wondering how it was so well cared for and styled given that they didn't have the products and equipment we have now.

Long hair looks so much nicer and more feminine on girls. This is a personal opinion that not everyone is required to agree with but clearly many do these days.

😱

Whycanineverthinkofone · 06/02/2025 19:01

speaking of PE, this can also be linked to why girls drop sports in secondary.

so many times I hear I don’t want to wash my hair/get all sweaty/have to do my hair again.

i coach swimming and this is a big reason girls drop out. The hair thing. I remember being told as a kid if I wanted to continue swimming in secondary school I’d need to keep my hair short- it was an actual choice given to me by my mum. Short hair or give up swimming.

possibly healthier?
I do think that if you're blessed with decent hair the best thing is not to muck about with it too much in terms of products .
Actually, maybe it was the lack of heated straighteners etc.? They can't do your hair any good , then you use more product to rectify it which also isn't great

They used to iron their hair straight. So while their was no for purpose straighteners, heat was used to get straight hair.

Yes - genuinely shocked and horrified.

I think it’s seriously messed up that you believe that there is only one way to look “feminine” . or that femininity itself- defined by some rigid stereotypes in your mind - is the only way for a girl to look “nice”.

Shorter hair can be so much more practical and easier to manage; it can also look totally gorgeous and feminine on any number of girls. Long hair can be lovely too.

For sure - it will be .

Meanwhile we have adult women on this thread declaring that long hair simply looks “more feminine” and “nicer” on girls.

And this in 2025..
I despair.

Beautiful long hair doesn’t necessarily flatter the face.

This is true. The other point is that long hair doesn't necessarily mean beautiful hair. I once worked in an office where several of the women were trying to grow their hair, the hair itself wasn't beautiful, and it didn't suit them. They never trimmed it so it just hanged lankly. The texture and quality of the hair is also important.

I think you need to go back to school for reading comprehension as nowhere in my comment do I say that there is only one way to look feminine. Forgive me for my personal preferences. I apologise for horrifying you with an opinion that does not match yours.

You said longer hair looks “so much more feminine” and “nicer” on girls. Your statement was a general one.
Of course you can have a personal preference about your own hair/ look - but to make a general statement that longer hair looks “so much more feminine” and “nicer” on “girls” (as if girls are all the same and there’s only one way to look nice and feminine) is definitely a problem, for it’s sexist (not to mention racialised) undertones.

noworklifebalance · 06/02/2025 15:55

Homogeneity was always a thing as a teen. They have always gone round looking like clones in their friendship groups whether it be goths, street look etc.

DD has beautiful long hair, doesn’t do social media, doesn’t follow trends, wear make up, not interested in boys (or girls) at the moment. She just likes having long hair.

Yes but that's the point - there was homogeneity within friendship groups/tribes but not across an entire age cohort

We had Vosene shampoo ( or the occasional sachet of Sta-Blond, even if you didn’t have blonde hair 😂) plus lots of brushing. She probably just had good hair.
Split ends were a nightmare though; in sixth form
many of us carried manicure scissors in our pencil
cases and would hunt split ends when the teacher turned to the board.

I assume that you didn't see every girl in the school on your short drive.

My DD has a mullet type cut, her friends haircuts are similar.

It is a mixture of both.

I had long hair as a teenager with a fringe bump, like most teenagers in my group, the 90's.

Edited

I had a puffy fringe too, I accidentally singed it with a lighter once trying to light a fag, it went grey and curly at the bottom 🤣
