To wonder why all girls have long hair?

Just driving past the secondary school at home time and every single girl had long hair. Different colours, some wavy, some straight, but every last one of them had long hair.
Where are all the short cuts or even mid length.
when I was at school (admittedly many moons ago )there was a huge range from short and spiky to mid length bobs to long.
just a little something I've been musing on for a while and prepared for people to tell me the local school is an aberration of long hair lovers

Fashions change.
I remember when I was a teen what was popular changed a lot.
It'll be the same these days only they're luckier what with hair extensions being widely available.

Thedogscollar · 06/02/2025 15:29

I think SM and influencers have a lot sway on this. If you look at programmes like Towie and Love Island all the girls have the same look.

Dotjones · 06/02/2025 15:29

Kids copy each other, if the popular ones have long hair they will all want it. They all follow the same celebrities so try to imitate the same styles. Hair is one example, that strange fishface pouty selfie pose is another.

Catza · 06/02/2025 15:30

I had long hair growing up because we had no money for a regular hairdresser

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/02/2025 15:31

It’s called fashion.

Poirot1983 · 06/02/2025 15:33

Fashion. Long hair seems to have been the norm. now for a long time. I am possibly about the same age as you, OP, everyone at school had short hair back then. The 2 girls in my class in secondary school who had long hair were viewed as 'square' and quickly had their hair cut short once they realised this (Lady Di style or short with a 'rats tail').

GatherlyGal · 06/02/2025 15:34

It's a shame. It feels like another way kids are less free than we were (I'm 50).

noworklifebalance · 06/02/2025 15:34

Because the like it?

Limth · 06/02/2025 15:36

I think there are a few reasons:
Young women are heavily influenced by social media influencers who all adhere to very conventional performances of femininity.

Young men are displaying increasingly misogynistic attitudes and expectations of women and relationships.

There's more at stake and risk with non-conformity. When I was at school, an experimental haircut would mean a bit of piss-taking on the bus for a few weeks until it grew back. These days it'd be all over social media which sticks forever.

Girls with short hair risk being assumed to be trans.

Coffeeishot · 06/02/2025 15:37

I had perms as an older teen just like every other girl/woman at that time, it's just a trend probably fuled by sm or reality tv it isn't really as big deal as you think.

FabFeb24 · 06/02/2025 15:40

Where I live the girls in the two local secondary schools all have long straight hair which has been the look for the whole nearly twenty years I have lived here. I find it amazing that the fashion hasn’t changed in that time.

BUT I did some supply teaching in an all girls school in the next town and there were about five girls in each class with short hair and an androgynous look.

I expect the students in the city schools look different again as they are much more diverse and would not wear long hair and short skirts.

Suzuki76 · 06/02/2025 15:41

I'm 40 and the shortest hair in my class on a girl was a bob below chin length. No pixie cuts to be seen!

Whycanineverthinkofone · 06/02/2025 15:43

I think it’s more than fashion.

short hair now indicates male. So if you’re a girl you automatically draw attention to yourself, and your sex/gender identity questioned. Even if it’s clear you’re female, it’s a weak spot for bullies.

one of my dc had short hair as a child and yes, they did end up growing it because they got sick of the idiots and mean kids.

so I also think parents won’t cut their girls hair or allow it to be cut, for fear the child will be bullied.

and so we have a catch 22..

but do you remember the perms of the 80's I was looking back at photos the other day which reminded me. 99% of the girls in my high school had them!

Needspaceforlego · 06/02/2025 15:43

Fashion!
Same with short skirts, fashion.

Now I think about it starting secondary mid 80s it was short hair, long skirts.

I think in the 80s not every house had an electric shower. Washing your hair with a mixer thing or a basin or water was a faff, so short hair was easier. Hairdryers weren't that great either.

ValentineValentineV · 06/02/2025 15:44

Fashion, same as teenagers all having perms or bobs etc.

GatherlyGal · 06/02/2025 15:44

My DD got called a boy constantly when she had short hair. I believe it is a factor in her now identifying as a boy. People were shocking when I corrected them and told them she was a girl. She looked fairly androgynous but it was like people could not actually deal with a girl having short hair. I found it quite upsetting and still do as the consequences are ongoing.

Presumably also reflect girls schools where those choosing to study “boys” subjects is much higher.

single sex schools take away the boy/girl lines, so students are able to cross gender lines without ridicule.

JohnTheRevelator · 06/02/2025 15:45

I've wondered about this too lately. I can remember back in 1980/81 when I was 17 and just starting at college, nearly all the girls had short hair. Except me. I was the exception with long hair. Now everywhere I look, girls have long hair.

ColourBlueColourPurple · 06/02/2025 15:47

Luscious long curls are on trend at the moment - heatless curls are all over SM. Teenagers follow trends.

Hazel665 · 06/02/2025 15:47

It's the fashion. If you saw a photo of girls in the 1970s you'd probably wonder why they all have short hair.

HamandCheeseSandwich · 06/02/2025 15:47

They don't.

Thornybush · 06/02/2025 15:47

I would guess because they feel that long hair is much nicer and more feminine.

Absolutely right. It isn't just 'fashion'. I really feel for teenagers today.

HamandCheeseSandwich · 06/02/2025 15:47

They don't.

Obviously. I'm not criticising it. Just wondering why there appears to be so much more homogeneity compared to previously
