To wonder why all girls have long hair?

Just driving past the secondary school at home time and every single girl had long hair. Different colours, some wavy, some straight, but every last one of them had long hair.
Where are all the short cuts or even mid length.
when I was at school (admittedly many moons ago )there was a huge range from short and spiky to mid length bobs to long.
just a little something I've been musing on for a while and prepared for people to tell me the local school is an aberration of long hair lovers

Fashion, plus it's often easier just tying hair back than styling a bob or short to bob length if your hair is remotely wavy, curly or thick. And hair products are better now, it's easier to keep longer hair looking good.

My hair is quite long age 49. I find it easier than short, unless it was very short indeed. But then I'd be going to the hairdressers a lot more often.

Why is it's a shame that girls have long hair? What a weird thing to say!

It's not a weird thing to say.

It's s shame girls are not as free to express themselves as they were 20+ years ago. Did you see my other post about my DD with short hair being called a boy all the time and being told she was trans? I believe it was a factor in her identity issues which are ongoing.

"None were bullied for being a boy or not being feminine enough."

No, but my friend went to the mart in her overalls and another farmer asked her dad who the young lad was.

SisterAgatha · 06/02/2025 16:34

I grew up in the 80’s &90’s. Some girls had long hair, some mid length, some short. None were bullied for being a boy or not being feminine enough.

I grew up in the same time frame; had hair so short it was shaved at the back and absolutely was bullied for having short hair and told I was a boy all the time.

Do you want to say which parts of what I've written you find silly rather than just make ageist insults?

CandyLeBonBon · 06/02/2025 16:34

Girls with short hair risk being assumed to be trans.

Yep. My daughter wanted her hair short and sure enough the minute she went into school, the predictable "are you a boy now?" bullshit raised it's ugly head.

If anything, I thing regressive stereotypes are significantly worse than they were when I was her age. We had so many famous women wore their hair short and who broke the sexist mould: Annie Lennox, Alison Moyet, Servalan and Dayna from Blake's seven, Sinead O'Connor, Brigitte Niellson etc.

Such a shame 😳

Slayyy · 06/02/2025 16:35

I live in Europe. Same here. Long natural wavy/kink seems to be the thing with the teen girls round here.

arethereanyleftatall · 06/02/2025 16:35

And literally no one has ever mentioned that one of my DDs has an elfin cut aside from complimentary

Then they're very lucky @Originblueberry .
My dd 16 who would love short hair says it would be social suicide at school for her. (Coupled with a few other ways she doesn't conform). She has enough to cope with with other stuff going on, so just keeps it long to spare the hassle of bullying about it.

It’s a shame that all girls have long hair and they seem to shun individuality. This was not the case when I was at school in the 70s.

Have you had a girl with short hair?

I have. Like pp the comments and attempts at bullying is rife, and people think it’s ok.

fortunately mine has no gender identity issues. But they did end up growing their hair because they got so utterly pissed off with the constant idiot making stupid comments- including a group of primary aged kids following her round a fucking swimming pool asking why she was wearing a girls costume.

try spending some time with a girl who has short hair, if you can find one.

If you look at photos of teenagers in the 1970s everyone has long hair, boys too.

arethereanyleftatall · 06/02/2025 16:38

Why can’t they?

As I detailed up thread @Princessconsuelabananahammock9 , my 16yo dd does not think she can have short hair, even though she wants to, without being constantly questioned about pronouns/sexual preference etc by teachers and pupils alike which she finds offensive, regressive and she can't be arsed with.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/02/2025 16:38

Just wait a couple more years - you just need a couple of influences and a musician or two to go for it and they'll all be wanting cauliflower perms.

I've made a few posts. How is anyone supposed to know which one you're referring to?

Ddakji · 06/02/2025 16:39

Because in terms of gender stereotyping we have gone backwards. It’s as though the second wave feminism of the 70s never happened.

arethereanyleftatall · 06/02/2025 16:40

** Oh don’t be so daft and hyperbolic

another one with bugger all experience of teens today**

The absolute irony here, @Originblueberry , you are the only one here insisting your child's experience is the same as every other teenage girl.

Mamabear300 · 06/02/2025 16:40

My girls choose how they have their hair. One goes for mid length one chooses pretty long. I've had my hair all different lengths but found shorter hair just made me look fat 🤣. So for this reason I opted to keep my hair longer and still do to this day.

Presumably also reflect girls schools where those choosing to study “boys” subjects is much higher.

single sex schools take away the boy/girl lines, so students are able to cross gender lines without ridicule.

What are "boys'" subjects exactly?
Are we in the dark ages?

Trousername · 06/02/2025 16:42

It does seem surprising that very long straight hair has been the norm for so long - at least 15 years. And it's not just the length, the style always looks the same, centre parting and straight, or long and slightly curled at the ends. In previous decades hair fashions used to change several times within the decade. For example if you look at eighties or nineties styles there were long bobs, short bobs, hair was wavy, straight, layered, with fringes, side partings, different colours, ponytails...it was more individual.

Maybe it's social media, I don't know, but hair has got boring.

ILiedToJimmyNail · 06/02/2025 16:42

My daughter would be aghast at the suggestion of short hair 😂

However, it is an interesting observation OP and come to think of it, she has no friends with short hairstyles - even the sporty kids have long hair.

Personally I like it and think it looks feminine and natural.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 06/02/2025 16:42

Teenagers always have a uniform. In the 1990s we all thought we were so alternative wearing flowery skirts, wavy hair and DMs. If you look at old photos we don't exactly look different from one another, there is definitely a look in every era.

People thinking that in their day everyone was oh so individual and original still need to grow up a bit and think on.

Styling a bob is also a lot easier than it used to be what with better cutting, paddle brushes and straighteners.
