Employers hell bent on working in the office full time

NewDayNewLife25 · 06/02/2025 13:41

Anyone else currently job searching and noticed the same thing?

I'm utterly miserable in my current role which is unfortunate as I've been there for 4 years and use to love it, but a new manager has changed things. I've always worked from home.

Anyway, I've been applying for jobs, mainly remote/hybrid working but also a few office based roles. I always state in my cover letter what I'm looking for, and my address is on my CV too.

A few employers have contacted me, saying that I'm perfect for the role, have all the experience/skills that's required and that they think I would make a great addition to the team. But as soon as I've asked about the working set up, that's it, done. They won't entertain it and decline my application.

I just think it's a shame. I know that they probably have plenty of applications, but surely it's more important to hire the right person, with the right skills and experience. Not just because that person happens to live near the office. Half the time they can't even explain why they need the person in the office. Is it control?

I'm fed up already!

I think we are overhyping how ‘talented’ these people are, who want to wfh!

It is nothing to do with talent but the particular role.

I work with people who live in different locations to me and with a company who have multiple locations. Therefore it makes no sense for me to come into the main office unless other people who I am going to directly work with are there as well otherwise I am just going to disturb other people.

Also some of my work is sensitive which means even people in the office aren't allowed to see it. This means I can't use an additional monitor and have to use my laptop screen.

Not surprised employers are getting fed up with people insisting they work from home, so they can walk the dog, pick up the kids watch TV. It's a skivers charter,

If their employees are getting away with that, they're crap employers. Good employers don't need their staff under their noses to know they're working, they can tell by results/output. It's a very tired trope you're peddling here.

Exactly

NewDayNewLife25 · 06/02/2025 17:35

@Munnygirl and how would you possibly know that? Have you been there when I've spoken to employers? Have you read my emails or seen my application forms?

OP posts:
NewDayNewLife25 · 06/02/2025 17:36

Clearly @Munnygirl is an employer.

@Munnygirl god you're relentless

Well so were you with your insistence your letters from recruitment agencies or whatever were personalised to you when they plainly weren’t.

NewDayNewLife25 · 06/02/2025 17:37

@Munnygirl it's my thread?! If you don't like it you can always bother someone else...

OP posts:
NewDayNewLife25 · 06/02/2025 17:39

@Munnygirl why are you so bothered about people working from home? Is it because you're an employer? You seem to be avoiding the question...

I know that because you haven’t been sucessful
yet. And where have nsaid those who work from home are lazy piss takers? I’ll wait for you to quote it

jellyfishperiwinkle · 06/02/2025 17:41

I don't think it's great for the planet for millions of people to travel in to an office five days a week if the job can be done at home. Plus it means that tens of thousands or more who could work based at home go part time or stop working, meaning a lower tax take and less economic growth - without even considering the human perspective.

In one breath they want all the sick older and disabled people working and in the next they want everyone going into the office every day.

You can't have it both ways.

NewDayNewLife25 · 06/02/2025 17:43

@Munnygirl that doesn't even make any sense. I've not been successful because I've declined to attend an interview due to the company not offering hybrid working. You really are bizarre.

spikefaithbuffy · 06/02/2025 17:43

I have WFH as a reasonable adjustment
My job doesn't need networking, water cooler conversations or team meetings etc
Although I work as a team it's very independent work with no time to have conversations during the day

Wouldn't want to go back into the office now

I don't think you got the memo that climate change worries are trumped by the desires of employers and governments. And until they take it seriously, there really is absolutely no point in you doing so.

Once again, do as the priest does, not as they say.

Still waiting for you to quote where I said all those working from home are lazy and pisstakers. Oh that’s right I didn’t. It’s you who’s being bizarre now

StrategyOfFailure · 06/02/2025 17:45

I know from previous threads that nobody cares about this issue. But there are so many young people who want to get started in a new job and learn from their seniors. They genuinely do not want to work from home aged 21. They may not have a quiet place they can work from home. They may need to get away from their flatmates. It is very lonely for many young people to sit in their bedroom on their laptop in their first jobs. This is the case even when there is a supportive manager and teams meetings during the day.

I valued my 20s of going to work and then going to meet up with colleagues and friends after the working day. Some of my fondest memories are from that time. I wouldn’t want to do that now though!

Yes, working from home suits us middle-aged people and parents with young children. But I do feel that our young adults deserve better.

NewDayNewLife25 · 06/02/2025 17:46

@Munnygirl don't you have somewhere else to be?

Are you having difficulty in finding a quote that’s not there?

NewDayNewLife25 · 06/02/2025 17:48

@Munnygirl are you an employer?

OP posts:
Goodweekincoming · 06/02/2025 17:48

I agree that some people ruin it for others especially the ones who don't pay for childcare and have small kids at home while they are meant to be working. The sheer amount of people that do this is evident on the threads here. You CANNOT do both no matter how bloody quiet you say your kids are.
I can totally understand why employers get fed up with this and then have to insist EVERYONE come into the office. People take the absolute piss. I have had employees have kids screaming in the background, waving on a zoom call and feeding a child fishfingers while trying to talk to the team. Then you have the ones who do multiple school pick ups for different kids and are missing when you need to ask them anything. Those people who abuse WFH to save childcare costs feck it up for everyone else.

Because the cream of the talent is going to employers who recognise that flexibility is part of the compensation package these days. If it's just bums on seats that employers want, then fine, pay a bit less and get someone less good. You get what you pay for.

I'd question the assumption that the.cream of the talent dont want to be office based.

How would that be proved?

NewDayNewLife25 · 06/02/2025 17:51

@Goodweekincoming I understand that, but not everyone has kids. There's 12 people in my team and only 2 have children.
