100% this.
Just tell them. No need for gentle or reminder.

ssd · 06/02/2025 11:36

Agree

ssd · 06/02/2025 11:36

Gentle my arse

DUsername · 06/02/2025 11:38

Agree but it's not as annoying as the people on here who say 'kindly/gently op' at the start of a reply to a post and then go on to be absolute bitches.

NormaleKartoffeln · 06/02/2025 11:38

I absolutely hate that stupid term.
Reminder is fine, if a reminder is even required. 😆

BIWI · 06/02/2025 11:38

Passive aggression at its finest.

BatchCookBabe · 06/02/2025 11:38

Sorry @Burnout50 What are you talking about? Confused

Jk987 · 06/02/2025 11:40

Wholeheartedly agree with all of the thread so far!

KimberleyClark · 06/02/2025 11:49

“Sorry, can’t stop” when you have literally just said hello in passing.

Burnout50 · 06/02/2025 11:50

Acceptable (in my world)...
A reminder
A final reminder

I could live with...
A quick reminder

Bad...
A gentle reminder
A friendly reminder
A polite reminder (actually probably worse than gentle, but don't see it as much)

Heres a novel idea.... Maybe if you did what was being asked there wouldn't be any need for reminders!

I'd need to know what's being asked of you to know if it's unreasonable to avoid it.

Bbq1 · 06/02/2025 12:18

As bad as a notice for something that actually begins with the words, "Polite Notice". What's the alternative? "Rude Notice"?!

Here's another novel idea... don't assume i forgot, or 'didn't do' anything...

The latest one was from work about a non compulsory webinar that hasn't happened yet.

I totally understand sending out emails reminding people that something is happening or needs to be done. But f*king gentle can f*k off as already stated.

I didn't assume anything. I guessed correctly that you haven't responded to something. And you haven't. The fact it's something minor is irrelevant isn't it.

Pull up your big girl pants and respond. Then you won't be chased for not responding.

Simples.

I always think of Umbridge whenever anyone starts a sentence or email with "gentle reminder", it's so appallingly saccharin and patronising

Burnout50 · 06/02/2025 15:54

No. You did not guess correctly.

There was no expectation that i answer the email.

And also from a noreply email address, so I couldn't, even if i wanted to.

And like, it's clearly a rant. Get with the program. 🙄

I would guess, because we get it a lot at my place, that it is more a company wide 'gentle reminder that if you haven't yet signed up to this dull webinar, there are still spaces' rather than chasing people to say yes or no.

Skandar · 06/02/2025 15:55

And yes, I agree - regardless of whether the reminder is needed or not, it never needs to be 'gentle'. Its just a reminder.

There's no need is there? Reminders, like all communication, should be polite as default. As for 'gentle', how bloody gentle can you be about 'Please take your mugs back to the kitchen at the end of the day. Thanks.'?

ThighsYouCantControl · 06/02/2025 16:04

Ooh I hate this too. It’s weirdly patronising? I also hate on AIBU when someone asks how to “gently tell someone they’re being unreasonable because I fundamentally disagree with what they believe?” Or something. Just tell them. Politely. Or not. But accept that you might not change their mind and move on.

Admit it, you're the webinar host and you're pissy because no one has signed up to your webinar?

Yes what’s the point of saying Gently or Kindly? The rest of the post will show how kind or gentle it is.

whoevenknowsanymore · 06/02/2025 16:24

Disagree - I work with people who can get very defensive when given feedback. They respond better when I frame things with 'polite reminder' or 'quick' or 'gentle'

SofaSpuds · 06/02/2025 16:31

Can't help but laugh OP - Gentle reminder, my arse!! It's invariably a passive aggressive bitchy reminder 🤣
