I’m 55! Still having periods. I’m so done with this. Anyone else dragged on this long?

I'm not an expert by any means, but apparently women who have children later in life have a longer lifespan due telomeres (some kind of gene). So I would assume late menopause is related to that also,

In this context what would 'later in life' mean ?

AyrnotAir · 06/02/2025 20:57

My stepmum didn't stop till she was 59 and it was only because she got a mirena in to stop them!

theonlygirl · 06/02/2025 21:01

God I'm so fed up of it. On one hand I admire the bodies determination to reproduce but surely just bloody evolve! We don't need to have kids in our 50s ffs.

It's not my experience in my family. All early in life mothers and lived well into their 90s.

Not sure. I had my 2nd at 42 and at 53 my periods are still like clockwork. So I'm hoping it applies to me 😀

BlueFlowers5 · 06/02/2025 21:09

I thought that the UK average age for menopause is 53?

My DM had to have a hysterectomy aged 54.

I had #6 at 30 and am still clockwork at almost 52.

farmlife2 · 06/02/2025 21:12

I'll just look at my own family history of early birthers. If I follow suit I'll get to my mid-90s, but who really knows? People die all over the place chronologically.

BitOutOfPractice · 06/02/2025 21:12

58 in a few months. Still regular. I’m pretty furious about it.

BitOutOfPractice · 06/02/2025 21:15

Beamur · 05/02/2025 21:38

I think that's one option. I'm not keen.
I take it as tablets for 2 weeks out of every 4 already.

Don’t get too excited. I took continuous progesterone for two years. Periods still regular.

@sunshinechaser its not foolproof.

chipfork · 06/02/2025 21:16

Yes regular as clockwork until just stopped aged 56 +1 month

emmetgirl · 06/02/2025 21:20

I was 56 when mine stopped.
I thought they'd never bloody end!

sunshinechaser · 06/02/2025 19:49

For all those with troublesome periods-why not take HRT? After time you could switch to the continuous one and not have any periods at all. That's what I do and it's sooooo good not to have to faff about with tampons!

Because if you're still menstruating it's not safe to do continuous (or so I was told). At least now I have a period every few months whereas on HRT I was having a break through period every month.

sunshinechaser · 06/02/2025 21:34

@Macaroni46 I think the advice from the British Menopause Society is you can switch to continuous HRT after a year on sequential. I switched age 46 and haven't had a 'period' (withdrawal bleed) since. Bloody fabulous!

thethingsyousee · 06/02/2025 21:44

I'm 63 this month. Still having fairly regular periods a year ago, GP put me on HRT (I get a bleed every month as it is sequential). I feel like my peri symptoms have moved up a gear, so it's possible I am nearing menopause now, but who knows?! GP insisted on a biopsy of the endometrium last year (couldn't believe I was still having periods) but that came back clear, thankfully!

tinytemper66 · 06/02/2025 21:53

I am 58 and had my last period on November. I went 9 months prior to that. I wonder if I will have another one.

ScruffMuffin · 06/02/2025 22:00

A question for you lot: I'll be 48 soon, and have had no peri symptoms at all yet. Most of my friends have been moaning about it since their early 40s. Anyway, I'm usually every 25 days, but my last period was 8 days late. Could this be the very first sign? (I've also been working super hard and am now ill, so it could be other things I suppose.)

shehasglasses48 · 06/02/2025 22:15

Yes, became a bit irregular at 54 but last one at 56.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 06/02/2025 22:16

I was regular as clockwork till 54 and 4 months then they just stopped. I’ve now been menopausal for 3 months and it’s glorious 😁

Bookloveruk · 06/02/2025 22:18

Im same. 55 this year and as regular as clockwork and really heavy. I suffer from anaemia now and think this is a factor

GlassHalfEmpty70 · 06/02/2025 22:44

I had an early menopause at 43 🥳
I'm now 54 and love not having to deal with all that palaver 😅

Nospringchix · 06/02/2025 22:47

alwaysMakingItsofar · 05/02/2025 22:05

I am 47, why I have periods every 21 days now. It used to be every 28 days

Mine did this at the very start of perimenopause. They gradually got closer and closer. It completely crept up on me!

AuntieObnoxious · 06/02/2025 22:51

57 and still getting them. There either very light or extremely heavy with flooding.
