I’m 55! Still having periods. I’m so done with this. Anyone else dragged on this long?

I was 54. Regular as clockwork and just stopped suddenly. No menopausal symptoms whatsoever - no hot flushes or anything. Feel very lucky.

user1471465608 · 06/02/2025 18:10

@Beamur presumably you are on sequential HRT then, in which case your periods are likely artificial withdrawal bleeds rather than true periods? How long have you been on HRT for? It would normally be switched to continuous progesterone after 1 year, which you wouldn't expect any bleeding with (apart from the first couple of months)

Feckedupbundle · 06/02/2025 18:11

I was 54 and thought I was done with it,I'd go about 6 months with nothing, then I get an awful, very heavy, painful period out of the blue. My GP said that the fact that I was still having periods at this age, made me an "outlier".
They finally stopped 2 years ago, then I had bleeding last month, which is currently being investigated. I had scans and a hysteroscopy and the nurse couldn't see anything amiss with the womb lining and thinks that it's my reproductive system having one last hurrah!
Considering that I started my periods at 11,I've had quite enough. However, reading these responses has made me realise that it could be worse.

Dogsbreath7 · 06/02/2025 18:15

Nope mine went bang on 50. I now think like a man - no concern at all for what I am doing (swim, travel) and no pain or feeling shit for 2 weeks out of 4 liberating. Menapause hasn’t been great but by god beats PMS.

BooBooDoodle · 06/02/2025 18:16

I’m 44, diagnosed as being perimenopausal after a hefty 5 years of hell trying to get taken seriously. I’m on the Mirena and have been for 8 months now. I used to bleed heavily and it affected absolutely everything, I have fibroids too. Thankfully I’ve only had one period which was nothing more than a few days of spotting since I had it fitted. I do spot occasionally for a day at a time but have been told this takes time to sort out. I have even asked for the entire lot to be taken out. I ask every time I go to the doctors. I don’t need my uterus anymore and don’t know why the heck we still have to endure this bullshit after it’s served its purpose. We’ve suffered enough and want freedom. Doctors don’t give a shit about women’s health anyway and that’s the long and short of it. As if being female isn’t bad enough.

ClodHoppers · 06/02/2025 18:17

I'm 52 and I've had enough of them. Can't imagine how pissed off I would be at 55 or 58 god forbid!

Mumoushka · 06/02/2025 18:20

Had my last period at 57 and I must say I was so pleased. I had suffered terribly with adenomyosis and fibroids in the previous five years that it was an absolute relief. I feel for you

MMUmum · 06/02/2025 18:21

My Grandma was pregnant with her last child at the same as her eldest daughter was pregnant with her first🥶 they grew up together but were actually aunty and niece, luckily I stopped at 48 without any menopause symptoms

Rottweilermummy · 06/02/2025 18:30

I'm 56, stopped, about 2 years ago, annoyed didn't mark the date, but just so glad they've stopped, I know someone just started hrt, few years older than me, she is getting periods again!! stuff that lol

thesoundofwildgeese · 06/02/2025 18:37

I was around 57.

The date of my final period could not be determined as I had become irregular, then went around 56 days without a period but then segued into endometrial bleeding due to simple hyperplasia without atypia and large fibroids.

"I don’t need my uterus anymore"

The uterus helps support the bladder and the ovaries continue to produce some oestrogen well into the 70s. For deaths from all causes of mortality, women with an intact uterus fare better than women who have had hysterectomies.

Spriterat · 06/02/2025 19:01

Finished as I turned 50. Four years without and it is great to not have to think about it.

PinkPanther50 · 06/02/2025 19:05

Im 54 and I’m a couple of weeks off of 1 year since my last period! Fingers crossed that’s it! I did have a couple of 6 months with no period so I’m really hoping this is it and I can drop the peri and become officially menopausal!

Khayker · 06/02/2025 19:06

Went to 58 and then nothing, no run in, no stops and starts, just completely stopped but I was in premenopausal for years before. Still had regular as clockwork periods but v heavy lasting 10 days or more. Almost ended up having a hysterectomy but then they just stopped, thankfully.

LankylegsFromOz · 06/02/2025 19:12

I'm not an expert by any means, but apparently women who have children later in life have a longer lifespan due telomeres (some kind of gene). So I would assume late menopause is related to that also,

Itiswhysofew · 06/02/2025 19:16

I'm 58. Mine stopped by 56. I had 2 years prior to 56 of having a few. One time was 6 months without then the buggers returned!

My GP told me not to wish them away, as they keep you young insideConfused

CatsBalls · 06/02/2025 19:22

My mam was still having a bleed every month when I was with her during the lockdowns so she’s have been 65

SunflowerSeahorse · 06/02/2025 19:42

In 2024 I had periods in May, August and December. I'm 58, and it's pissing me off that I haven't achieved the magical one year mark. I had 3 in 2023, 3 in 2022 (|I have a tracker on my phone).

sunshinechaser · 06/02/2025 19:49

For all those with troublesome periods-why not take HRT? After time you could switch to the continuous one and not have any periods at all. That's what I do and it's sooooo good not to have to faff about with tampons!

MsCactus · 06/02/2025 19:52

I've read that you stop ovulating during periods around 5 years before your periods stop. So in all likelihood you'll be infertile even with having regular periods this late - for all the posters who still seem worried about contraception.

NHS advice is you can stop contraception at age 55 even if you're still having regular periods, for this reason.

I’m reasonably sure I’m still ovulating- ewcm and other signs.

obviously I can’t know for sure but not willing to take the risk. My dr said contraception is needed until a year after periods stop.

chances are I would be fine but I don’t fancy being a medical marvel 😂. It would be just my luck…

Anonymouseposter · 06/02/2025 20:13

I was having regular monthly periods at 58 when I had a hysterectomy. The got heavier and heavier and I was anaemic. The hysterectomy was a big relief and I was back at work feeling much better five weeks after it.

tillymintt · 06/02/2025 20:46

omg, don't. I'm 53.5 and still having them. They need to fuck off now.

Because no medication is risk free and I discovered I was allergic to HRT.
