Hair roots

Got my hair done nearly 3 weeks ago.
I get my grey roots dyed (she paints it on, waits and then wash and blow)

Literally a week later I see specks of grey coming thru. Now nearly 3 weeks on I can fully seeing them coming thru. Surely it should last longer than this. Am I getting the wrong treatment done? I'm 39 years old brunette and have just grey roots at the top.

Should I change hairdressers or ask for a diff treatment or just box dye because even box dye lasts longer than this

Can you clarify? Do you have root re-growth after 3 weeks or do you see grey hair coming back through mid length and ends?

kathjee · 05/02/2025 14:24

Basically my greys come back, I have like a skunk line thru my partings. It's almost like the dye gets washed off and the greys show up again

Is your hairdresser using permanent or semi permanent dye, or a gloss? It will vary quite a lot depending on this.

If it's along your parting, then it's just normal root regrowth. I don't want to sound patronising but since I actually met someone who thinks hair grows from the ends, I will mention that it grows from the root. And it can often grow faster in some months than others. Nothing wrong with the colour treatment. You just need a root touch up.

MissEloiseBridgerton · 05/02/2025 14:38

I get permanent dye on my roots every 6-7 weeks, by week 5 you can see my greys again because of regrowth.

CosyRoby · 05/02/2025 14:44

I need to do my roots every two weeks now.
Im also brunette and never ever had to do it this frequently until I hit my forties.
Its just regrowth and my greys I’d say are whites now so its more noticeable.
No way I’d be able to afford a salon retouch so frequently so I just use a generic brown hair dye and paint it myself . I mix the hair dye in the bottle and then squeeze it into the bowl.
You can buy the bowl and brush kits in Poundland / B & M etc.

purplecorkheart · 05/02/2025 14:47

My hair seems to grow quite fast so by three weeks I have regrowth.

kathjee · 05/02/2025 15:22

I didn't think it was regrowth just because I could go nearly 6-8 weeks before u could see my greys and now literally in 2 weeks I could see them peeking thru. In fact I think this time it was a week later I saw the shine of it peeking thru. I did change hairdresser so that's why I assumed it might be what dye she's using.

OP posts:
kathjee · 05/02/2025 15:25

@sweetpickle2 I'm not even sure what she's using I assumed all hairdressers use the same 🫠

@CosyRoby I'm hitting 40 and it seems the same for me, but can hair regrowth really speed up as we get older? I thought it was the other way around.

I use L'Oréal touch up spray in between and tend not to have too many partings or put my hair up. I hate the dry coarse feeling of it and it takes so long to wash it out

OP posts:
CosyRoby · 05/02/2025 15:26

I don’t think it’s that our regrowth speeds up , I think it’s that it’s more fully grey / white therefore more noticeable .

FloppySarnie · 05/02/2025 15:37

It’s your regrowth. I’m the same. It’s a bloody nightmare. It’s so much easier for blondes!! Start the process of going lighter now - it will be much easier to look after than being a greying brunette!

ThatGladTiger · 05/02/2025 15:45

I feel your pain. Mine comes through so quickly now.

I can’t afford to go to the hairdressers every time so my new routine is:

  • the colour spray in my parting when I go out for a week or 2
  • home root dye once it gets too much for the spray
  • every few months back to hair dresser to fix the mess I make

😂

kathjee · 05/02/2025 15:47

@CosyRoby Damn yea makes sense. See this is why I like asking on here, my baby brain is making me clueless 😭.

OP posts:
kathjee · 05/02/2025 15:48

@FloppySarnie if I try to go lighter though isn't that even more upkeep and maintenance. I have got lighter highlights going thru my hair and it's not black like it originally was. It's more light brown now but still very much dark lol

kathjee · 05/02/2025 15:50

@ThatGladTiger it's actually depressing! I think hitting 40 is going to really hit me. I get told all the time I don't look my age, and tbh I don't think I do. But I can see the processes slowing down/changing/collagen etc etc. I actually went grey a lot later than my mum and sisters, they were around 30

CosyRoby · 05/02/2025 15:56

@kathjee I have balayage , so dark roots then caramel highlights that start low down .
So I can maintain my roots myself as I’m painting onto already dark bits and not going near the highlighted bits .
Doing it this way means I only need to go to the hairdresser twice a year for the balayage and I do everything else myself .

ADHDHDHDHD · 05/02/2025 15:59

No it's the hair regrowth.

MightyGoldBear · 05/02/2025 16:00

I've been slowly going grey/silver since 15 ! Early 30s now and there's a lot I'm embracing otherwise I'd live at the hairdressers having it re done. I've gone for grey blending I'd really reccomend it. Give it a Google.

shrinkingbee · 05/02/2025 16:32

Could you post a photo zoomed in at the roots? I'll be able to tell you if it's new regrowth (which sadly we can't do anything to change) or whether it's this combined with the mid band losing its pigment.

JandamiHash · 05/02/2025 16:34

A hairdresser has absolutely no control over how quickly your hairs grows. They can’t paint inside your scalp so whatever comes out is gonna be grey

BlueEyes90 · 05/02/2025 16:35

I used to keep my roots dark but since going blonder & getting baby lights I find the greys blend in so hide them better 😊 might be an option to consider!

Thank you for this. I started going grey at 16 and I'm very dark brown. Late 30's now and there's alot of white😬 will now look in to this grey blending 🤞

If it's right at your scalp it's roots. Like fingernails the hair is continually growing.

It it's not right at your scalp and it's further up the hair shaft then it's not done right.

kathjee · 05/02/2025 20:33

@shrinkingbee looking at it from the pic it's the scalp but also shaft of hair. This happened after about a week and it's not been even 3 weeks yet

OP posts:
kathjee · 05/02/2025 20:33

@shrinkingbee for some reason it's not letting me post a pic
