Hair roots

Got my hair done nearly 3 weeks ago.
I get my grey roots dyed (she paints it on, waits and then wash and blow)

Literally a week later I see specks of grey coming thru. Now nearly 3 weeks on I can fully seeing them coming thru. Surely it should last longer than this. Am I getting the wrong treatment done? I'm 39 years old brunette and have just grey roots at the top.

Should I change hairdressers or ask for a diff treatment or just box dye because even box dye lasts longer than this

I’ve got dark brown hair and early 40s and I have to dye my roots maximum every 3 weeks, I start to see them within 2 weeks. The 10min root touch up kits for in between a bigger colour session are a life saver.

If it's along your parting, then it's just normal root regrowth. I don't want to sound patronising but since I actually met someone who thinks hair grows from the ends, I will mention that it grows from the root. And it can often grow faster in some months than others. Nothing wrong with the colour treatment. You just need a root touch up.

@kathjee Mumsnet have disabled the attach photo function for members due to an illegal photo upload thing on Sunday night by trolls. Not sure when they will turn it back on …

shrinkingbee · 10/02/2025 16:17

Sorry I didn't realise Mumsnet had changed the attach photo settings @kathjee

Yes, if you are getting a new line of regrowth (same all across the hair) turning grey, it would be your new growth which is impossible to change. But if it's creeping down the hair (mid lengths) then it may be that the colour is just not holding.

Do you know what brand/shade you have? Maybe changing the brand may work, in my experience some covers white hair better than others despite promising grey coverage.

kathjee · 10/02/2025 19:48

@shrinkingbee I think this should work now

That just looks like normal regrowth to me.

It'll come through quicker the older you get, as you have more greys!

ArcticBells · 10/02/2025 20:21

My roots need touching up after 2-3 weeks

Normally regrowth for me for that lenght of time. Actually, you probably have less than I would.

FloppySarnie · 10/02/2025 20:27

That’s me 2.5 weeks after I get my roots done. I actually did a double take when I saw the photo 😂

kathjee · 10/02/2025 20:32

Yes so this was 2.5weeks. I just thought should it be on the hair shaft like that too.

I used to be able to go 4-6 weeks, I feel like this has just happened overnight

Being a dark brunette and going grey is an awful combination. I hate it so much. I want to go lighter but my hair always goes orange when it’s dyed lighter so easier said than done. I keep looking at Susanna Reid as she’s done a good job going lighter and it suits her - though she also had a weird in between phase.

RosesAndHellebores · 10/02/2025 22:00

My natural.cour is mouse @kathjee and I am much older than you.

The base of my hair is dyed a very light brown. My hairdresser then outs through blonde and caramel(ish) highlights. Because there are three or four colours and my hairs lighter than naturally it all blends.

Sometimes she just puts some highlights through sometimes just a root touch up.

kathjee · 10/02/2025 22:10

@FloppySarnie yes I am so dark brunette, near enough black. But I got these lighter brown highlights put in months and months ago and as u can see it's becoming orange lollll need to do something about it. I just think going lighter will mean more maintenance, esp trying to stop it looking copper/orange

Purple shampoo conditioner and hair masks are what you need to take the orange tone out. It really does work.

Trousername · 11/02/2025 00:08

You could try a product called Plantur 39 Colour Brown (from Boots). It's like a tinted conditioner, not a dye. You have to leave it on the roots for at least 10 minutes. I'm also brunette and it means I can go longer between box dyes. It's not perfect but it blends the grey in quite well.

I’m also a brunette. Blonde does not suit my skin tone (cool with pinky undertones) and it would involve a shit ton of bleach.

dothehokeycokey · 11/02/2025 00:30

@kathjee
Root sprays really clog up the hair and because it's grey it more rigid so your hair needs a really good clarifying shampoo before the colour and getting moisture into it at the root will help the colour grab better.

Looking at your pic that's a fair amount of regrowth for 2.5 weeks
Definitely mention it next time and also make sure you clarify to get any build up out before you go

There is a blonde for all skin tones. A cool one needs ashy tones rather than a warmer blonde. Natural blondes can also have cool skin tones. But even a light brown is more forgiving
than being a darker brunette.

To those saying that going lighter is to much hassle, goes to orange, needs bleach etc, I think we have to be realistic that the alternative is being 80 with really dark hair. It looks really odd and I think it’s also very aging.

My Mum went gradually lighter very effectively, not to blonde but a very light brown. She did it gradually with highlights and it didn’t damage her hair at all. It’s in better condition than mine and she’s late 70s.

Having said all this, I’m still dark (which I love) and I’m scared of going lighter. I do think it needs to be done though as at 48 I think the darkness is making me look older now.

kathjee · 11/02/2025 12:24

@dothehokeycokey wait that actually makes sense because I have to wash out the spray at least twice before I go. What clarifying shampoo would you recommend or is it something the hairdresser can do

OP posts:
FloppySarnie · 11/02/2025 12:31

@kathjee
i can really recommend this product for covering grey in between hairdresser visits. I have always used sprays like L’Oréal Wow etc but they are hard to wash out and make my hair feel really claggy. I saw Trinny recommend this stuff on insta and I’m a total convert. It’s a powder but easy to apply, easy to wash out and doesn’t make your hair feel weird. It’s not expensive either. You can even get it off with a damp flannel which I had to do the other day when I got a cancellation for the hairdresser but didn’t have time to wash my hair. It’s great!

No, not at all. And in fact, I find it less messy than the spray which always seems to strain both my head and my headboard.

Starlightstargazer · 11/02/2025 13:40

Now I’m in my 40s I have white hair growth at 2.5 to 3 weeks. Very annoying! I use Lloreal nice n easy root touch up (left on for 30 mins instead of the 10) in the middle of full dye process. So week 0 full dye, week 3 roots, week 6 full, week 9 roots etc etc
