I hate them. So much. PLEASE can someone recommend a very very quiet one before I literally rip it out of the wall.

We have the same issue. We’ve taken to using the torches on our phones to brush our teeth by / see the toilet with at night so we don’t wake the whole house up by turning on the fan and light (connected).

parietal · 04/02/2025 22:42

these are not too bad

you get a fan and then an extra module that can do either a timer or a humidity sensor a switch. those are the bits that look like odd white bananas.

I hate mine too. Dh comes up to bed and leaves the ensuite door open with the big blaring lights and insanely loud fan noise. Totally ruins my relaxing drifting off to sleep. Every night I have to tell him to shut the bloody door and every night he mutters something stroppy under his breath at me about not being allowed to clean his teeth in his own house. I'm not sure what I feel more rage towards to be honest.

What an indictment of ensuites! I hate the things for exactly this kind of reason. Isn't there a family bathroom you could use instead, and use the ensuite for storing or drying clothes?

Myheadhurtsagain · 04/02/2025 22:57

Just replaced my en-suite one with this one from Amazon, which is far superior and is so quiet that sometimes I sleep the whole night even tho it's on and I'm a person who needs silence to get to sleep.

Our fan has the tubing going up into the attic and then it joins with another part (I've no idea what 'the other part' is called, it's a white plastic bit that has a valve thing in it and then more tubing the other side which leads to outside). The plastic bit in the attic was resting directly on a beam and as it vibrates slightly it made noise you could hear all over the upper floor when the fan was on. We've now got it so it sits just above the beam but not on it, and now we only hear the fan if we're actually in the bathroom. Could that be why yours is so noisy?

AnOldCynic · 04/02/2025 23:13

There are loads of practically silent extractors. Google is your friend. Also if you don't want one that comes on with the light every time get one with a pull cord.

have it changed to a double switch, your fan doesn’t need to come on with the light. I have a double switch, only turn the fan on when required.

Worth spending money on a good one. Builders tend to install the cheapest rubbish. I got a Soler & Palau one, I think this or similar, and it's amazing

Edited

Get a motion sensor light for the bathroom! And/or get a better fan.

Absolutely - death to en suites. Hate them.

Yes, this one. It's not silent but is very quiet compared to others.

Someone else recommended this on an old thread I found. Frontrunner.

I think this is possibly the same one as the Soler & Palau but sold under a different name??

The newer models are very quiet but also separate switches for light and fan are your friend. I insisted when I had my bathroom done a couple of years ago. Still makes me happy when I go to the loo in the night!

Google is my constant companion, believe me.

Came here to recommend this exact fan!

Crazymadchickenlady · 04/02/2025 23:44

We got an in-line one installed in the loft. Much quieter and more powerful than the other ones. We also have the one recommended on this thread in the downstairs loo. The one we have in the loft is this one www.screwfix.com/p/vent-axia-17104020-100mm-inline-extractor-fan-with-timer-240v/53730

Kilroywashere · 04/02/2025 23:46

If you have a window in your bathroom to throw the fan out of, why do you need a fan anyway?

Me too. Had to explain several times to the electrician who was very confused that we didn’t want to be utterly beholden to the fan noise at all times.

Also got a nice soft warm over mirror light that goes on separately again and is the one to be used in the evenings. Aaahhhh.

Not the same. Envirovent is a different manufacturer. I was looking for something quiet but also powerful - the S&P fan shifts 250 cubic metres p.h compared with 96 for the Envirovent. Look at the specs. It depends if you need the extra power.

Flossflower · 04/02/2025 23:59

We have one bathroom in our house that has no window. It has an extractor fan which comes on with the ceiling lights but we also have lights on the mirror so that is sufficient lighting and doesn’t turn the fan on.
Our en-suite has two windows.

Ah - OK. So the S&P fan is more powerful, but not as quiet? Have I got that right? Thanks!

Ours is both noisy and shite. We do have the luxury of turning it off with an isolator at the top of the bathroom door though.
