What age was your child reliably potty trained?

Dd will be 3 in May and still in nappies. Had one attempt at potty training about 6 weeks ago. Didn't go well, a few wees on the potty which we praised. Lots more on the floor which we ignored. But after a few days she became really resistant of it, crying and screaming so I concluded she must not be ready and we'd come back to it.

Getting conscious that she's getting older now and it's been mentioned by nursery staff that all of her friends are toilet trained which felt a bit like a dig.

Is this a cause for concern yet?

DS1 at 2 years 3 months. DS2 - just after 3. DS2 - by far the easier. Just told me a week after turning 3 that he wanted to wear pants now and that was it.

NosyJosie · 03/02/2025 20:34

No cause for concern yet. Mine potty trained at 3-3.5. Took a few days and we built gently up to it. Also helped that they were in nursery and saw their peers use the potties.

DC1214 · 03/02/2025 20:34

Three for all four of them - did make attempts before then but without much success and a lot of hassle. Once they were dry during day they were dry at night too but I know that’s just luck. Definitely not a cause for concern.

Mandylovescandy · 03/02/2025 20:40

Sounds fairly normal to me, mine were a bit earlier (2.5 years and about 20 months as the youngest was keen to be like eldest though it took a little longer until was 100% reliable - would often forget at nursery when outside in the garden). We did the oh crap potty training and it seemed to work really well for us. I wouldn't have said eldest was 'ready' by any visible signs but took to it fine. Youngest still in nappies at night at nearly 7 though but think that is hormonal!

Dazzylazzy · 03/02/2025 20:42

DC1 just before 2. DC2 really resisted but cracked it by 2.5 ish. I used cloth nappies with tends to lead to earlier potty training.

babyproblems · 03/02/2025 20:44

Just Before he turned three. I would just take nappies off and leave them off. Put knickers on and keep the potty handy. Start with bare bottom at home like you’ve done; and if she wants clothes on, put knickers and easy to pull down trousers- just keep going. There will be accidents! Don’t revert back to nappies; just keep going. Huge huge huge praise. Bribery even. Just don’t yo-yo back to nappies!! Stick with it.

FridayNightDinnerForTwo · 03/02/2025 20:46

Nursery should be working with you on potty training. So taking her for toilet trips when others go so she can see what's happening, maybe ask for a few easy outfits to help her and our nursery suggested jelly shoes so regular shoes didn't get ruined.

It really varies with children but what I would say is that poos are often harder to crack. Sometimes children can be dry for ages but resist pooing except in a nappy. They won't be doing this in secondary school however!

VoodooPigeon · 03/02/2025 20:46

DC1 was 2. She was fairly easy to potty train and it only took a week or two, but she still had the occasional accident until about age 4, usually when she was distracted.

DC2 was 4, but he had some developmental delays. He was difficult to potty train and it took about 2 months of constant training which nearly drove me insane. But after that he didn't have a single accident.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 03/02/2025 20:47

DD 4…. she’s an August baby so started school a fortnight after turning 4 and still had a few weeks accidents unfortunately. Generally it was because she didn’t want to ask to go, though she knew she needed to.

DS 5…. once he started on adhd medication. Until then I think he had too much going on to notice what his body was feeling. It was an overnight change once he was medicated.

warmheartcoldfeet · 03/02/2025 20:50

Just over 3 yrs old for day times

We were a bit slower with bedpants -I think he was 6, but that was my fault I think as I was worried about wet beds and working full time/broken sleep etc.
Needn't have worried, he wet the bed once (saved by the plastic cover), then never did it again.

2chocolateoranges · 03/02/2025 20:51

Ds was dry during the day from 2years 2 months and dry at night 6 months later.
Dd was dry day and night from 2years 4 months old.

i work in early years and only a few months ago we had 16 , 3 year olds still in nappies, with hard work and determination between staff and parents we are down to 6 children (including 2 ASN children)

Seaside31 · 03/02/2025 20:52

No cause for concern yet at all @tinkersmell34

DS was about 2y10m and it was super easy because he was ready! Not a single accident for the first few months! He started nursery a few months later and we had a couple of weeks where he had 2-3 accidents each week but only at nursery as he was distracted playing 🤷🏻‍♀️
As others have said - try not to go back to the nappy. Really just persevere and give loads of praise.

Since you’ve tried relatively recently, I would personally give it a couple of months before you try again 😊

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 03/02/2025 21:07

About 2.5yo using the oh crap method. Now we've final cracked overnight too and she's 3 next month. That took a lot longer than daytime potty training.

SouthLondonMum22 · 03/02/2025 21:09

DS was 18 months. I felt like getting to him earlier when he wasn't as likely to protest like he would do at 2+ helped.

I don't think it's a cause for concern but I'd stick with it once you start again.

DramaAlpaca · 03/02/2025 21:20

All by 2.5, but we did it earlier in the 90s. We stayed at home for a week and just got on with it. I suppose most of us were SAHMs back then, which made it easier.

Proudofitbabe · 03/02/2025 21:21

DD was 2.5, DS was a month off 3 and neither showed any signs of being ready any earlier. Both caught on really quickly (within days).

MumChp · 03/02/2025 21:22

1st. Done at 1 yo 6 months.
2nd. Done at 2 yo 6 months.
3rd. Done at 3 yo 9 months - took forever.

WhatMe123 · 03/02/2025 21:24

Dd1 2 months before her 3rd birthday.
Dd2 was 3 and 8 months (totally refused up until this point then one morning woke up and asked for knickers) just wait until they're ready op

Whotenanny · 03/02/2025 21:29

Both my elder ones were reliably potty trained by at 2yrs 9mo. My third is a tiny baby still, but I'm aiming for 2yrs.

RetiredJasonOrange · 03/02/2025 21:30

DS 2.5
DD 2 years 3 months.

35965a · 03/02/2025 21:32

Both 2.5. It didn’t take long.

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 03/02/2025 21:32

DD1, 22 months,
DD2, 2.5 years
DS1 just over 3
DS1 just under 3

RaspberryBeretxx · 03/02/2025 21:35

My ds was just over 2, fairly reliable straight away, maybe a few accidents. Dd was over 3.5. Just as clever as ds in other ways - maybe slightly less physical as she was 15 months before walking I think but very dexterous, good speech etc. She was reliable straight away, I think she had 1 accident. I was so stressed that she’d never get it and we had multiple attempts to train her from 2 upwards. She just decided when she decided and that was that. If you read on here you absolutely must “train them” as it’s a skill like riding a bike that must be taught. I’m sure that’s true for some dc but didn’t seem to be for either of mine 🤷🏻‍♀️.

I think this will be the case for mine too. She's very switched on with speech, memory and generally understanding things so I kind of expected her to grasp it quite quickly. But she can also be stubborn and clearly did not like it. So I didn't want to push it too much.

DD1 was 2 years 6 months. I tried at 2 years 2 months and it was an absolute disaster, she wasn't ready. When I tried the second time it only took 4/5 days for wees and poos.
