What age was your child reliably potty trained?

Dd will be 3 in May and still in nappies. Had one attempt at potty training about 6 weeks ago. Didn't go well, a few wees on the potty which we praised. Lots more on the floor which we ignored. But after a few days she became really resistant of it, crying and screaming so I concluded she must not be ready and we'd come back to it.

Getting conscious that she's getting older now and it's been mentioned by nursery staff that all of her friends are toilet trained which felt a bit like a dig.

Is this a cause for concern yet?

Both around 3, DD informed me about 2 months before she turned 3 that she would be wearing knickers now. Few accidents but reliable fairly quickly, I'd tried a couple of times from 2 and was met with absolute refusal.

DS was a week or two before he turned 3. Had to make a bigger 'thing' with him, let him choose underwear, read the pirate Pete (I think) book, lots of praise and rewards. Took a few weeks until accidents stopped but once he was excited about his Dino pants and wanted to use a potty he was more receptive.

So very much on their terms. We learned quickly with DD she would let us know when she was ready to do things and did the same with DS. Nursery was a massive help with potty training, DS loved going to the little toilets with his bestie.

Dc1 2y 3 months, she asked to wear knickers 1 day and that was pretty much it.

DC2 was just before he was 2 - he was dry at night around 20 months which I was taken by surprise by and thought must just be fluke but it continued and then I figured we might as well go for the day as well. He had maybe 2 accidents ever? I got very lucky on the potty training front.

mitogoshigg · 03/02/2025 22:11

Dd1 Blush 4.5 sort of, tons of accidents until 8/9 she's autistic. Dd2 2 yrs 7 months (same time as her older sister basically)

mediummumma · 03/02/2025 22:22

Both of mine were about to turn 3. I took one week off work to stay home, ditched the nappies, on went the big boy/girl pants and they cracked it within the week. We never ever had an accident after that first week because they were old enough to really understand. I used nighttime pull ups for another few months as I didn’t want to be changing bedsheets in the night, but we moved on from these quickly too.

We tried at two years and 8 months and it was a nightmare. She was resistant, cried every time we tried to make her go to the toilet. By the end of weekend one we had two wees in the toilet and 8 wees and 4 poops on the floor. it was awful. We had thought she was ready as she kept asking to sit on the toilet but we realised it was a game. She would literally sit on the floor then stand up and pee on the floor. She didn't understand what she was meant to do on the toilet.

Two months later and it was a different story. it wasn't perfect and the next few weeks were still awful but the first weekend we had about a 70-80% success rate. she was having 1-2 accidents a day for about two weeks, then we went on a family holiday and i had been really worried about it as obv not close to the toilet all the time. she didn't have a single accident all week!

Three months on and we get the odd accident. maybe once a week or fortnight usually when she's overtired. but she's getting there! She pretty much always tells us now too

Flittingaboutagain · 03/02/2025 22:27

3.5 minimum here. Then essentially got it from the get go. Did not "train" rather I provided the support when they decided they wanted to start using the toilet. Had massive false start about 18 month previously when I thought I should try and potty train because they could say they needed a poo. The ability to say they needed a wee and hold it long enough to get to a toilet came way after a year later!

Hiccupsandteacups · 03/02/2025 22:29

Potty trained at 23 months. But had a few accidents. No accidents from about 27 months onwards

biscuitcat · 03/02/2025 22:30

I wouldn't worry at that age! DS1 is just shy of 3.5 and after a painful 5/6 weeks we seem to have largely cracked wees at home, but this is our third attempt (and to be honest, if he wasn't starting school in September I may have buckled - he's strong willed and unmotivated which are a fairly hideous combination...). Still getting there at nursery as he's so distracted, and still unwilling to poo on a potty/toilet. I felt some pressure from nursery to have him trained by last September when he went into the preschool room but he genuinely just wasn't ready - and actually, they've been pretty good now in supporting.

meganna · 03/02/2025 22:30

Eldest was 3.5/4 before we didn't worry about accidents when out and about. Went dry at night almost immediately.

Youngest was daytime potty trained at 2y1 month within a week, but still wears a pull up at night at 2.5 which I know is very normal.

RosesAndHellebores · 03/02/2025 22:36

We had lots of tries and they weren't interested but we made the potty a friend and it lived in the toybox. Complete and utter disinterest until they decided.

DS: At 2yrs 8 months said "want pants". Ho hum I thought packing spare trousers and pants. He looked up at me in the Sainsburys queue and said "need a wee wee". That was it - he never had an accident. He was dry at night at night a month later.

DD: a little later at 2yrs 9 months and I lifted her at my bedtime until she was about 4.5/5 but she continued to have a beaker of milk or two after tea Time. She never wet the bed though.

It was never an issue and they were much later than their contemporaries who all.seemed to be trained at 2ish but were having accidents when they were turned three. At the time I thought mine were very late. Bothe born in the mid/late 90s.

FortWalton · 03/02/2025 22:39

DGS managed to get himself partly trained literally the week before he went to school at 4.5. At that point, he would use a potty but not a toilet.

He's now 4.9 and is pretty reliable if taken to the toilet regularly, but never goes off his own bat.

He has been dry at night since before he was mostly dry during the day.

No apparent SEN.

MarioLink · 03/02/2025 22:40

2.6 and 2.3. Had a lot of resistance from the first one. Both girls but my sister had her boys trained even earlier.

ChiliFiend · 03/02/2025 22:44

My daughters were 2 and my son was 3. Definitely not a cause for concern yet, and you're wise to wait until she's ready.

ElsaLion · 03/02/2025 22:59

DS1 - Just after he turned 3, but we're now back to square one with his poos because of ongoing constipation since last autumn, though he's very reliable with urinating. Unfortunately he's now soiling daily, but hopefully with a daily disimpaction programme he will be sorted over the next 3-4 months. He turns 4 in April
DD - turned 2 in January, and is staring to show an interest in using the potty, so we're hoping to start her over the coming weeks.

Chasingaces · 03/02/2025 23:02

All of mine between 2 and 2 and a quarter but I didn't work and staying in for a week and cracking it was relatively easy.

CarpetKnees · 03/02/2025 23:32

All between 2 years, straight after birthday, and about 2 yrs 4 months.

rja0702 · 03/02/2025 23:39

DD is 3 this week, we started just after Christmas. She is dry during the day at home, but we are working on when we are out. She is nearly there though. The first two weeks I really felt like giving up but persevered and it clicked.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/02/2025 05:54

Oh, god... dc3y3.5m... was going so well, still in diapers, but using toilet to pee throughout the day. Then a major regression due to baby, now 13m, and just starting to get older dc on toilet again. Had to back off completely as it became a power struggle. Now getting dc to go on toilet at every diaper change and shortly after having a drink. DC can do it, just doesn't want to. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Thisismeme · 04/02/2025 05:59

Started training bay 19 months and reliable within about a month

anicecuppateaa · 04/02/2025 06:04

Ds1 potty trained quickly at 2.5. His twin sister was just turned 3. Ds2 reliably potty trained by 2 years 4 months. They are all different. We tried earlier with dd but constant accidents upset everyone. Waiting and trying again meant it happened much more easily.

Starryknightcloud · 04/02/2025 06:13

Before 2, readiness is a myth pushed by a pampers marketing campaign apparently. But plenty of people do say it's easier and quicker when they're a bit older.
Nappy changes were getting bad enough before we went through the terrible twos so I was glad to get it done before.

TheAirfryerQueen · 04/02/2025 06:29

3.5 but she had developmental delay.

Changedforthetoday · 04/02/2025 06:36

just over 3. Tried at about 2.5 for a day but had 3 accidents in the space of 3 hours and no interest in potty and a resistance to caring he was wet. Tried 7 months later when he showed an interest and wanted to do it. He had 2 accidents and that was it. Both times when he was really involved in playing with something and got immersed.
My midwife had told me only try when they are interested to do it and it worked for us..

Writerbiter · 04/02/2025 06:50

2y4m and 2y8m. Both dry at night within two weeks of being dry in the day. DC2 took a bit longer to get it but he was at nursery half the week whereas it as lockdown with DC1 so we had nothing else to do.

Bubblemonkey · 04/02/2025 07:40

My daughter’s 2yr 8m & has basically cracked it, even at nursery.
