Been out visiting relatives....I am actually shocked just how bad the litter is. Its bloody everywhere, frankly it's depressing. Where is our Pride? The motorways and A roads are so bad. Along with the absolutely shocking driving standards.

I live in a city and it's filthy. I actually see people deliberately just throw things on the ground right after walking past an empty bin. I thought people were dropping things by accident and it was just the volume of people doing it up until that point.

The problem is that once one person does it and it's there, loads more follow suit.

StandFirm · 03/02/2025 17:17

Honestly the explosion in dog ownership really doesn't help...

VoodooRajin · 03/02/2025 17:22

And smokers dropping fag butts

DowntonNabby · 03/02/2025 17:25

Totally agree. We've just got a puppy so I am now hyper aware of her eating stuff that's been thrown down on the pavement/parks and it is staggering how much litter there is.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/02/2025 17:27

Around here I see much less dog mess and many more people picking up than a few years ago. The canal towpath used to be a minefield, it isn't now. Same in the local parks. The social norm seems to have shifted in a positive direction.

There have always been 'litter louts', the increase in fast food and people eating on the hoof may have made it worse but it really isn't a new phenomenon.

Which perfect place in the world do you want to live in?

One where there's no rubbish anywhere . Where people are kind to others & considerate to their surroundings!

I have found my people!

I HATE litter with a passion! I don't understand why people do it!

It's getting to the point I'm going to get a litter picker and try tidy up spaces near me but I also have anxiety which I'm trying to battle! It would be nice to get a group of like minded people to help me... I'm in Glasgow... shithouse so it is!

My mother lives in the country and it's like another world! Clean and beautiful l! Oh one day I will be in t'country.

A litter picker grants you immunity from anything IME.

I used to pick around our drug dealers and even they would shuffle out the way.

Good luck with that search!
Pretty much the same everywhere. It's the people who are selfish arses, not the physical place!

Wemaybebetterstrangers · 03/02/2025 16:59

Honestly I don’t recognise what you’re talking about. Where are you?

It's not like that where I am either.

Where are people living that they have bags full of dog 💩 in all the trees?!

EasternStandard · 03/02/2025 17:32

For some reason our area has just been hit by loads of litter since Christmas

Not sure why, that and dog poop it's depressing

Headingtowardsdivorce · 03/02/2025 17:33

I've organised a couple of litter picks. Didn't get many volunteers though, so we just did what we could. If anyone had dared to complain that we hadn't done their area, like a pp's DH had, I think I would have blown my top, and I'm very laid back normally.

Got loads of people thanking us for it on social media. I can't really see why some of them couldn't have given up an hour of their time to help. I wish everyone would do their bit - obviously beginning with not littering in the first place.

Allthenameshavegone1972 · 03/02/2025 17:34

@Sinkintotheswamp insurance for some plastic bags 🤣 what is the world coming to, h&s gone mad!

There is an interactive map of community hubs in Glasgow that arrange litter picking: https://glasgowgis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=e7df4372ad5e4f2a91e18279ffd40430

I was in southern China recently and couldn't get over how clean it was. Millions of people in a city and not a spot of litter. Dictatorships have their positives, it seems!

Purplebunnie · 03/02/2025 17:37

FoxtonFoxton · 03/02/2025 16:26

YANBU at all.
I cycle and hike a lot and all I see are hedgerows and verges stuffed with litter and fly tipped crap. I live in the Cotswolds and it's terrible! Just today I've seen two loads of fly tipped mattresses, tyres and bags of rubbish. We seem to get a lot here as it's easy to tip because it's so quiet.

Contact the council responsible for the area. They can sometimes identify where the fly tips originate from, find the tipper and fine them. Maximum fine is £50K.

MushMonster · 03/02/2025 17:37

There is a flipping reason for this: the recycling goes out in little light silly open bags, or open boxes and it is a windy place! Even those whose council uses tied up bin bags, those can still be taken away by strong winds. Also, when they collect the recycling, they drop like a tenth of it on the street and they leave it there!
I have lived here 20 years and I still cannot get my head around why we do not have closed containers for the recycling. In Spain, every few streets you have a common collecting point. It is a bit of a pain to walk to it daily with the recycling, but then no fly offs.
Around two years ago it was so windy that 100% of the recycling in our street was taken away, including tins and glass jars! I still dread thinking where they ended up. If they ever hit someone and hurt them.
There is also the random idiot who just throws the empty plastic bottle in the canal or by the path they are walking. But I think those are a rarety these days.

TheChosenTwo · 03/02/2025 17:38

A pp was correct when they said people are scruffy, you only have to look at some peoples houses/gardens to realise not everyone has pride in their own things let alone their public surroundings.
We have a few local councillors who have organised weekend litter picks, I have to say our immediate surroundings are pretty good, not perfect but the worst is very much kept at bay and under control.

I live in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Fly tipping is constant and horrenous. A local man started videoing people who fly tipped one specific location and putting the evidence on Facebook etc. He was threatened by the Police within 30 mins of the first one being posted and told to remove it. The police do nothing. They also dump on private land the council have threatened private landowners with clearance so they have to pay for it. It's a disgrace.

He should send the videos to the council, they are responsible for removing the fly tip and investigating and fining.

I have every time I go out. I have numerous videos and photos. The stuff gets removed and then in a month or so, more arrives. We have a recognised problem here, fly tipping hit a record high last year. The person fined here the other day paid £600.

MurdoMunro · 03/02/2025 17:45

For those suggesting crims for this work - while community service as part of a punishment/rehabilitation programme can have all sorts of benefits, setting these teams to work is generally more expensive than re-employing the people the councils have let go. The community payback people need to be picked up and driven to site, supervised (closely!) by a paid leader, all the tools, premises, disposal costs are the same. Backroom admin costs are higher (eg sanctions admin against failure to turn up) and they don't have the flexibility to turn onto other reactive tasks. A team of 6 or 8 generally don’t achieve as much as 2 direct employed operatives, there are fitness/health considerations in that cohort to take into account when considering outputs.

By all means start these programmes up again but understand that it’s never free labour and the public purse could get more bang for its buck by just straight forwardly employing people.

buffyfaithspikeangel · 03/02/2025 17:47

When I go for a swim, we do a 30 min walk through some woods to the river

Every weekend we take a bin bag for rubbish picking on the way back and guarantee they will be full - plastic, paper, disposable BBQs, beer bottles etc etc

Always rubbish blowing into my garden, and clearing up dog shit on the pavement outside

I just struggle to believe that the police would threaten the person gathering the evidence! This world has gone proper mad!

We have 4 wheelie bins - large grey for general waste, optional brown garden waste bin which costs £40 per year, then two smaller - one for paper and card, another for glass, metal and plastic. Collected in pairs fortnightly, which is fine. They'll take large cardboard propped by the bins too.

This number of wheelie bins does of course require adequate space to keep them but it works well round here.
