Been out visiting relatives....I am actually shocked just how bad the litter is. Its bloody everywhere, frankly it's depressing. Where is our Pride? The motorways and A roads are so bad. Along with the absolutely shocking driving standards.

WTAF?

Pride in a beautiful country. Pride in the countryside, Pride in our coastline, Pride in our Civic buildings, Pride in our historic monuments, Pride in Forests, National Parks and nature. Thankfully I don't see it as just another economic zone.

With respect, why should I be proud of a landscape? I didn't make it. Historic monuments are nothing to be proud of either, monuments of hierarchy and oppression, of pain and the misery of slaves.

CheshireCat1 · 03/02/2025 16:44

We go out picking litter in the area, as do the neighbours. It helps if we all do a bit.

ThatMerryReader · 03/02/2025 16:45

Welcome to Post-Brexit Britain.
We warned about it. 52% of the electorate did not listen.
Now we suffer the consequences.

Also read a depressing article earlier about how Loch Long in Scotland is horribly polluted with plastic waste

I went there a few years ago and it was awful. Just piles of rubbish on the banks of the loch.

Glitchymn1 · 03/02/2025 16:49

It is. It’s filthy.
YANBU
It’s all a bit weird, people look right through you. Only the older generation seem capable of eye contact and conversation.

I live in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Fly tipping is constant and horrenous. A local man started videoing people who fly tipped one specific location and putting the evidence on Facebook etc. He was threatened by the Police within 30 mins of the first one being posted and told to remove it. The police do nothing. They also dump on private land the council have threatened private landowners with clearance so they have to pay for it. It's a disgrace.

LowSunshine · 03/02/2025 16:53

I'm sure this is a wind-up for the OP keyboard warrior to laugh at the irate people who respond 🙄....

In the event the post is actually real, did you drive the length and breadth? Every lane, village and city? 😆 you think the WHOLE of Britain is drowning under rubbish? It amuses me when someone posts about Britain as if they're the spokesperson for the whole country 😆

The large north east Scotland area we live in has a beautiful, clean landscape with proper positive community spirit.

Please don't come up here.

scalt · 03/02/2025 16:54

There are signs about fines for littering from cars, but I doubt if they’re enforced. I sometimes wonder: why not set up a camera at a motorway junction, film for a day, then fine for the day, like they do with mobile speed patrols? Councils tackle parking enforcement with great zeal, so why isn’t it as easy to tackle littering from cars?

ohtowinthelottery · 03/02/2025 16:55

I live in a rural village and have done a fair amount of litter picking in my time. The litter is frequently in places that no-one on foot would be the likely culprits. So it is clearly people throwing rubbish out of cars and vans. I just don't get it. How hard is it to just leave your rubbish in your vehicle until you get home and put it in the bin?

Haveacuppaandwaitforthistoblowover · 03/02/2025 16:55

I have found my people!

I HATE litter with a passion! I don't understand why people do it!

It's getting to the point I'm going to get a litter picker and try tidy up spaces near me but I also have anxiety which I'm trying to battle! It would be nice to get a group of like minded people to help me... I'm in Glasgow... shithouse so it is!

My mother lives in the country and it's like another world! Clean and beautiful l! Oh one day I will be in t'country.

I've always cleaned the pavement outside my house, swept the soil and debris out of the gutters, and pick up any stray litter. In our town we have a volunteer group which does litter picking every month in different parts of the town. Volunteers also individually clear weeds in the roads and cycle/pedestrian paths.

It's not difficult to make a difference but it does take effort.

I agree motorways and A roads are the worst, which takes a lot of organising and coning off of lanes. Personally I wouldn't do it.

It's like it all over, so depressing, just back from driving a fair way and it's shocking. Mile after mile of rubbish just lying on the verges, in the hedges, pathways. We're so disgusting and do not deserve to live on this beautiful planet. Makes me angry and sad in equal measure.

Honestly I don’t recognise what you’re talking about. Where are you?

Give it time, give it time. Just because you haven't experienced it yet doesn't mean your little corner of rural charm isn't immune! I thought my small city was lovely a few years ago... less so now.

Pinkradiolady · 03/02/2025 16:02

I was thinking the same. Why don't they?

They do! Except obviously heath and safety rules stop them from picking it off busy roads.

I think everyone is so miserable in the UK right now that they stop caring about keeping it nice, unfortunately.

Ok... I'll I wait another 50 years and make sure I look out for these massive piles of rubbish coming for us.

Why can't people accept there are areas where people look after their own and shared spaces? They do exist!

ThatMerryReader · 03/02/2025 17:09

Pinkradiolady · 03/02/2025 16:56

Oh please

It is abundantly obvious that the reason Britain is a freaking shithole right now if because of the financial disaster that Brexit has brought upon us.
There have been many reports detailing how damaging this has been for the economy.
So if the country is skint, we have to make cuts and that you see all the rubbish everywhere. Because councils can afford a decent rubbish collection service!

Because of overthinking liberal tossers that worry about the dear little prisoners ‘rights’ and feelings.

Actually they as part of a community service sentence, clear overgrown paths and cut back hedges and trees.

That's fine to feel that way but I don't share that view. I think we are very lucky to have such a wonderful history. I worked with an American who was amazed to live in a house in the UK that was older than his country of birth. He spent every weekend visiting sites such as Stonehenge and Hadrians Wall. I'm proud of my country.

FoxtonFoxton · 03/02/2025 17:12

Cotswold Council did issue a fixed penalty of £600 to a fly tipper the other day, so hopefully that might start happening more often. Sadly, the chances of catching people here are so small (they seem to dump down little lanes late at night where there will be no CCTV or cars driving past) so I haven't got much hope. It's SO beautiful here but you honestly can't go far without seeing a lay by full of crap or a hedgerow full of fast food bags. We do actually frequently litter pick as a community, but it's when you go outside into the lanes -people chucking stuff out of cars and dumping rubbish bags. It goes beyond litter picking. You can't litter pick a few mattresses into a bin bag.

Dd did litter picking every Saturday for D of E. She stayed in our small, rural village and I thought she wouldn't even be able to occupy herself for an hour here and I would have to drive her to the nearest town.

I thought our village had no litter but I was wrong. As soon as you got to the edges and country lanes, it was teeming. Over a few months, she collected over 300 kg of litter. All within walking distance of our house in a small village. I couldn't believe it.
