So MN is now a platform for CSA images

I actually didn’t see them, but it seems that there were multiple CSA images posted on MN last night in about a four hour period and MN HQ did precisely nothing other than rely on the volunteers who didn’t sign up for this to remove them.

I’m sure the media are going to have a field day with this.

MN need to remove the ability to upload pictures now as they are now guilty of making and distributing CSA images I’d go so far as to say the owners could face criminal prosecution over this.

The ability does exist to prevent these kinds of images being posted, and MN have done precisely nothing to ever prevent it.

It was only a matter of time. They make enough money from their crappy advert placements, why haven’t this been anticipated. We know what kind of world we live in.

The second one. On multiple threads with the caption 'enjoy your kids'

Fucking hell.

MerLOWnomore · 03/02/2025 07:46

I’ve not been on here for that long in comparison to others, but I always thought MNHQ were paid? Are MNHQ paid but not the night volunteers?

I’ve started reporting obvious troll posts to MNHQ recently, but I don’t understand why some of them stay up initially? They’re so obviously trolls, even down to their usernames sometimes.

Butchyrestingface · 03/02/2025 07:49

I was on the 11pm thread where it happened and like many others, reported immediately. It was removed after about 15 minutes. At posters’ requests the entire thread was wiped. Not surprised to hear more were subsequently posted overnight.

The images were obviously the worst of it (though they looked photoshopped) but the poster said some truly foul stuff too.

There needs to be a system to stop new posters being able to upload images to the site. That poster had no posting history whatsoever.

Just came here to say this. Not even trained those poor volunteers!

LBFseBrom · 03/02/2025 07:55

Child Support Agency? I didn't see the posts. I would expect anything unpleasant to be dealt with in during the day time. Presumably that has happened. We posters don't pay for Mumsnet, advertising does but the adverts obviously have to be carefully monitored which takes time.

Child sexual abuse.

Images of child sexual abuse.

Thsnk you honestly for creating this thread. I came here this morning to do the same. I saw those images, well part of them, and it was genuinely the most distressing thing I've ever seen. I'm seriously considering leaving MN after this. I can't fathom how can this be possible, in a parenting forum of all places. Technically, there's no excuse at all and I didn't know about the volunteers: it makes it even worse.

myotherusernamesarebetter · 03/02/2025 08:02

I think it’s outrageous that MN uses volunteers to moderate overnight when it’s a business.

I used to work for a charity that had a support forum. Daytime moderators were charity employees. Out of hours we used an agency with paid moderators. It’s completely inappropriate to use volunteers for this.

BadLad · 03/02/2025 08:10

The obvious solution seems to be disabling the option to upload pictures whenever volunteers, not paid moderators, are looking after the forum.

iloveeverykindofcat · 03/02/2025 08:12

An AI could screen any image uploaded. They just need to pay for it. No image containing a child should be allowed at all.

ARichtGoodDram · 03/02/2025 08:13

Given the size of the MN wage bill (Justine mentioned it around lockdown on a thread and it's a lot!) it has always been ridiculous that there isn't a single paid member of staff on overnight.

That would solve the problem specific to images - but not the wider problem of inappropriate posting, nor the use of unpaid labour to regulate the most valuable part of the site.

Unpaid labour restricts the pool of applicants and inhibits diversity. It is also probably illegal under NMW act, depending on the specifics.

Fartypants83 · 03/02/2025 08:24

OP didn't see.

Instead makes up a nonsense allegation that's probably libellous.

Not, it isn't providing a platform. The threads were removed quickly. Likely reported to the police and various IPs recovered.

Untwist your pants and get a grip.

Theunamedcat · 03/02/2025 08:30

They make profits because they take shortcuts

I agree they need to stop the ability to upload photos overnight these people are volunteers ffs

LoudSnoringDog · 03/02/2025 08:31

They were horrendous. Absolutely horrendous

EasternStandard · 03/02/2025 08:34

I didn't see any tg but agree reliance on volunteers isn't the best way, for them too

MidnightPatrol · 03/02/2025 08:37

I thought new posters weren’t able to automatically post photos to the site?

On Reddit subs are allowed to set rules around how long people have been members for / what their ‘rating’ is before they can post.

Doggymummar · 03/02/2025 08:37

That sounds horrific. I had to log off last night after reading a couple of posts on the thread entitled what's the worst thing you have endured. As a survivor of CSA and rape it was incredibly triggering. Not sure what the OP was aiming for but I was traumatised

Exactly. Those profits seem to be at the level of what might be required to actually have a glitch-free, 24-hour moderated website and IT support that is fit for purpose.

Doggymummar · 03/02/2025 08:38

No doubt this will be deleted taat

As in, someone posted them on a thread asking for help or someone posted them as some weird disgusting attack? 😟

A weird disgusting attack. I wan on here this morning when there were multiple pictures posted.

Edited

I think many posters found that thread cathartic, I was humbled reading all the posts, peoples honesty and bravery 🫶.

Perhaps an attempt to get Mumsnet shut down. I’ve been on here for years and noticed a lot of new far right influencing type posts following the US election.

I wouldn't rule this out. I've thought the same.

That doesn't negate the need to urgently review night time moderation arrangements. If the site can't afford to pay for that then there's something wrong with the business model.
