So for context we have been together just shy of 2 months. Never mentioned anything about hsv1 but only when he broke out with an infection told me.

His excuse was that he thought everyone had it.

aibu to think we should disclose this to our partners?

This exact thing happened with my friend. Her boyfriend was annoyed she hadn’t told him until she got one. I agreed with him. It’s your right, given it’s a lifetime thing, and above poster said can be past through sex. It’s not a pleasant thing to be left with for life!

At least half the people who carry the virus never get a symptom so they wouldn't know. So you've almost certainly been exposed to it and could be a carrier yourself 🤷🏼‍♀️

Because I've kissed about 12 people none of whom had symptoms at the time and the only two I kissed long term have never had symptoms. And no one in my immediate family have ever had them.

I'd say I'm fairly low risk .

I assumed children get them from their parents/siblings.

I'm crap at maths but if you've kissed 12 people then at least 8 of them could have had the virus and only 4 of them have ever known about it. But yes of course you're lower risk than someone who has kissed a lot more than that.

Funny how people who know they get cold sores are adamant it doesn’t need to be disclosed. If as you say ‘most people have the virus’ then why not say something just in case?
Most people who don’t get cold sores would want to know!

Probably because it doesn't enter their minds. Most people don't 'get' them - they got them a few times a long time ago and once the immune system starts creating effective antibodies most people don't get break outs so they forget all about it!
