To spend 30 quid on my neice?

Flowers665 · 02/02/2025 18:13

I earn an average wage but I'm single so have to pay all bills myself. Like everyone I've had to tighten my belt to make sure I've got enough to pay for everything. I normally spend about 30 quid on my neices for their birthdays (young kids) but I'm worried my sister might think I'm being stingy. How much do you spend on yours? I have 2 neices. AIBU to only spend 30 pounds on them?

I spend £10-15 on each of my nieces and nephews, who range from 7-16 years old

2chocolateoranges · 02/02/2025 20:21

We do £20 per niece/nephew.

we have 9 nieces and nephews and 3 friends children I buy for.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 02/02/2025 20:35

I'm not struggling for money and I spend £20 - £30 depending on what it is. I think that's plenty!

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 02/02/2025 20:37

That sounds generous.

BePinkOrca · 02/02/2025 20:42

I would not want my sister to go without or struggle on behalf of a gift for my children. I would be more than happy with the time/love and attention she gives them more than the £££. Taking them for a soft play or a park and a McDonald’s or something that gives them a memory on/around birthday is way more important than a gift per se.

Tillow4ever · 02/02/2025 20:51

We only spend £20 on all of our nieces and nephews. If there is something they really want, we would go a little over of course, but generally speaking we stick to that.

There is no hard and fast rule about how much to spend! And you have to consider if you are likely to fave more nieces and nephews in the future as you have to be able to spend the same on each.

LegoHouse274 · 02/02/2025 21:06

We used to spend around £30 originally on kids's birthdays/Xmas a few years ago. Now there a lot more children and we just can't afford it, so we spend roughly £20 a child. I don't feel bad at all, particularly as we often don't spend much more than that on our own 3 kids anyway.

Motomum23 · 02/02/2025 21:08

Toys are mega cheap... I got orchard toys puzzle and game set in the works today for £3.... if you can't afford to spend £30 then don't. X

Blarn · 02/02/2025 21:17

My brother always spends at least £50 on both his nieces, he enjoys chosing the presents but this Christmas spent less as he as just bought a house. I don't mind at all! I'd be happy with any gift for them now matter how little it cost as its just lovely he does that for them.

Truth25 · 02/02/2025 18:19

What can you even buy for that?

Lots of things. My little one went to a nursery friends birthday party last week and we got her a barbie, £12 and a Bluey book, £3.99, so 99p over. She loved the gifts.

TY78910 · 02/02/2025 21:40

I don't know how young is young but that's plenty to get a 'branded' toy from smyths / entertainer where there are often sales and nobody will know any better. You can get a Barbie set for £15-£20 for example. Tkmaxx can sometimes be an option for branded clothing for example. Just make sure you remove price stickers.

Truth25 · 02/02/2025 18:19

What can you even buy for that?

Art/craft supplies, a skipit, pencil case and felt pens, toy cars, Uno cards. Use your imagination.

TroysMammy · 02/02/2025 21:47

I have one niece and she has one Auntie. As a teenager I take her away for a weekend instead of big birthday and Christmas presents. If I had more than her then I would spend around £20 on each one, birthday and Christmas or a day out treat. Obviously that would depend on the child's personality.

MajorCarolDanvers · 02/02/2025 21:49

£30 is plenty.

I earn a lot more and spend the same amount on my nieces and nephews.

AubernFable · 02/02/2025 21:53

I probably spend about £30 a week on my little niece you’ll all keel over 😭 but we are very close and most of it goes on experiences and days out as well as little gifts.

My budget isn’t great either but don’t do more than you can afford, kids get excited by very little and mainly just want the time with you.

Withnoshoes · 02/02/2025 21:54

My nieces and nephews have always gotten £20 or a gift worth around that even now. Nothing once 21. If i took them out i’d buy them food at a place of their choice too. Always been grateful tbh.

I don’t get gifts for my birthday from their parents/my siblings or them and don’t have children for them to buy for. So if they complained they could do one tbh!

Gifts are what you can afford and want to spend.

Hoppinggreen · 02/02/2025 21:55

I send my brothers DC £20 each even though I can afford more.
I don't send SIL's DC anything

lilytuckerpritchet · 02/02/2025 21:57

We do thirty on nieces too.

Sprogonthetyne · 02/02/2025 22:06

I usually spend around £20, but the most recent one (4th birthday) was only £10. It wasn't intentionally done to reduce cost, that's just what the thing we thought he'd like cost. £30 is absolutely fine.

LostMySocks · 02/02/2025 22:08

DSis and I both have 2 DC. We usually spend between £15 and £25. Depends on what we see and what they might like. Some years it's at the top end but that balances with other years when it was cheaper.
We try and look for pressies that they'd love.
However we are both well off and the kids don't go without.
DHs family spend £50 per child for all cousins and top up with cash if gift is smaller. It's lovely that they care but sometimes feels a bit mercenary. I pity the (very lovely, very kind and generous) child free uncle. We try to invite him to lots of meals to make up for all the spends.

Cece92 · 02/02/2025 22:12

£30 is plenty. I don't have any nieces or nephews but I have a godson and I usually give him £30 for Xmas and birthdays. He's turning 13 this month so I've budgeted £40 as he's now a teen so I feel it's slightly more special. I have 1 young cousin and I spend £10-15 max and get a lot of little bits for her. She has 2 older teen siblings and they get £20 cash usually from me. I personally appreciate anything I'm given because In this day and age everything's so expensive. Xxx

mintgreensoftlilac · 02/02/2025 22:39

I gave my niece a £10 note for her birthday the other day and she was absolutely delighted!

InvisibilityCloakActivated · 02/02/2025 22:47

If you are strapped for cash, go to a charity shop and get a nice book, game, or jigsaw puzzle. So much is barely used and neither the kids nor your sister will know the difference.

neverthelastone · 02/02/2025 22:50

Absolutely fine OP! I spend £25-35 on my nieces and nephews, depending on what kind of thing they might like. For the teenagers I usually get a £30 gift card plus some chocolates or little bits on top. That’s a perfectly acceptable amount! In fact if I were you and the kids are small (younger than 10), I’d say £20-25 is perfectly fine.

For that you can get some lovely things. For kids’ presents I also often shop in the sales when I see something, so that the money stretches further. Sale time at Rex London, Argos, Sainsbury’s etc. can get you some really nice stuff for less than half the usual price. The JL and Monsoon sales are great if you want to buy little kids’ clothes at great prices, especially “special” clothes like a sparkly tutu or similar. For £20-30 for a little niece I might be looking at a sparkly outfit in the JL or Monsoon sale plus some cute hair items; or a little backpack or game from Rex London; or Dobble plus a skipping rope or a book (books are always a good buy!) So much nice stuff around for little ones at good prices, you can go to Flying Tiger and get a load of art things plus a dressing up outfit like butterfly wings or a game for really reasonable prices.

There are lots of gifts that kids under 10 love but that are inexpensive. A pocket kite, stationery set, a board game, a big set of coloured pencils and a notebook, skipping rope or football, aqua beads kit, any of those Galt science or craft kits, growing crystals kits, etc etc.
