To spend 30 quid on my neice?

I earn an average wage but I'm single so have to pay all bills myself. Like everyone I've had to tighten my belt to make sure I've got enough to pay for everything. I normally spend about 30 quid on my neices for their birthdays (young kids) but I'm worried my sister might think I'm being stingy. How much do you spend on yours? I have 2 neices. AIBU to only spend 30 pounds on them?

I have 17 nieces and nephews...

Yikes!

Maxorias · 02/02/2025 18:26

I think however much you can afford is perfectly fine.

My brother doesn't have a lot of money but when he/SIL buy stuff for my kids I am always genuinely thankful. Not just for the gift but for the time and thought, which is what has most value in any gift.

MeganM3 · 02/02/2025 18:26

£20-£30 is perfect & absolutely enough.

BarrioQueen · 02/02/2025 18:29

I spent less than that on my Nan one year.

Screamingabdabz · 02/02/2025 18:29

I think if you got a Superdrug or Boots voucher they could get a lot for £30, or put it towards some perfume. I think it’s fine.

Bearbookagainandagain · 02/02/2025 18:34

I don't even spend £30 on my own kids...

MumonabikeE5 · 02/02/2025 18:36

I think the better you know the child the less you need to spend, because a gift that really appeals to them doesn’t necessarily need to cost much for it to be really enthusiastically received. whereas if you buy them something more generic the monetary value is more obvious.

either way £30 is plenty, that’s not a friend gift amount, that’s auntie amount!

Dinosweetpea · 02/02/2025 18:37

I spend about £15 on my neices and nephews, sometimes £20 now they are getting older. Of course £30 is more than enough!

Beachhutgirl · 02/02/2025 18:41

£30 sounds fine to me. The most important thing is to try and get something for each girl that you think they will love, and that's particularly chosen for that girl
My experience is that it's this thatbthey will remember later, not how much you spent.

PinkArt · 02/02/2025 18:43

Truth25 · 02/02/2025 18:19

What can you even buy for that?

Nothing. Nothing in the world costs under £15. The OP will probably just have to shit in a box and give them that.

Bournetilly · 02/02/2025 18:45

£30 is plenty. My sister spends £50 on DC and brother spends £30, £30 is more than enough.

Cofffee · 02/02/2025 18:47

What do you get from your sister?

Eachpeachpears · 02/02/2025 18:48

My brother's dont get my kids anything and don't take an interest in them either. I'd be greatful if they showed up at the door let alone with a gift! Spend what you can afford and enjoy your niece's, they'll appreciate you being in their life

Han86 · 02/02/2025 18:49

I spend £20 on my niece and that's what my brother gives to mine.
They are all under 10 and seem happy with whatever they are given.

Bellyblueboy · 02/02/2025 18:49

OP that is plenty. You sound like a lovely aunt.

I hope your sister wouldn’t be so shallow.

mistymorning12 · 02/02/2025 18:50

Family spend limit is £15 on nieces and nephews. (And we’re all pretty well off).

AxolotlEars · 02/02/2025 18:50

I've voted you are unreasonable but only because I think it's too much money

EmeraldShamrock000 · 02/02/2025 18:52

It is more than enough.

Joker01 · 02/02/2025 18:59

Honestly OP I wouldn’t even spend that. You can get great gifts for small children for less than £10. Genuine quality things like books and jigsaws and Yoto cards (if they have one). Buy them decent things and don’t worry about the budget, most parents don’t want their kids to have loads of ‘stuff’ anyway! If you need to cut back then do it.

Purpleturtle46 · 02/02/2025 20:02

I spend between £15 and £25 on mine depending on what they want, £30 is perfectly fine.

popandchoc · 02/02/2025 20:04

I spend £20-25 on mine, £30 is plenty!

Fountofwisdom · 02/02/2025 20:07

i think £30 is generous. I spend less than that on babies/very young children (maybe £15 tops) but would spend about £30 on older nieces and nephews. But ultimately it’s about what you can afford. If you’re strapped for cash, spend £10/£15 on them. Never get into financial difficulty for the sake of buying presents, they are a luxury, not a necessity.

Powderblue1 · 02/02/2025 20:13

That's fine, don't worry. My sister struggles financially and I've told her not to get my DC gifts as they have enough and I don't want her to worry financially about the expense.

thaegumathteth · 02/02/2025 20:15

About £25 have 6 nieces and nephews.

I'd never consider anyone stingy who buys ANYTHING for my kids.

BlueMum16 · 02/02/2025 20:17

We do around 20 quid for nieces and nephews.

My DC would be grateful for £5 and this Christmas received a chocolate orange from one relative who wasn't working.
