To think kids shouldn't wear bikinis?

I'm just browsing the kids swimwear range on the John Lewis app, and keep coming across bikinis for little girls.
I don't know, am I weird for thinking this isn't right.
If I had a daughter, I wouldn't want her to wear something like that at such a young age.

I couldn't agree less. They are are far easier to go the toilet than a one peice. My daughter has always worn one. There is nothing sexual about a young girl in a bikini.

LoudSnoringDog · 03/02/2025 04:09

No issues. My daughter much prefers wearing bikinis/ tankinis

eightIsNewNine · 03/02/2025 04:21

It's unclear what you really complain about and what you suggest.

There is no reason to bother young girls with one piece costumes (unless competitive swimming/their own preference) - hard work at toilet, a lots of unnecessary wet fabric.

From my point of view, small children should be fine with bottoms only. Once it isn't enough, any kind of top which works for the activity is fine - be it full t-shirt for sun protection or the bandeau style top.
I would agree that some of the obviously adult imitating pieces can be impractical, especially the triangles with laces for tieing up, but it doesn't disqualify all two pieces.

I would like to see more short shorts styled bottoms over the knickers one in the shops, just to give more choice though.

Bikinis and two piece swimsuits do not mean the same thing. I assume the OP did not mind her daughter wearing a two piece swimsuit but did want her wearing a bikini. "The difference between the bikini and its two-piece predecessor is brevity. Simply defined, the bikini is an abbreviated two-piece swimsuit with a bra top and panties cut below the navel".

Yes they should, boys don't get this pressure to dress like that

Lots of boys wear ‘skinny’ joggers and jeans. Some little boys even wear leggings. No child should have to cover their form in loose clothing. It’s deeply disturbing that you think they do.

Devianinc · 03/02/2025 04:40

Really,y can no girl be able to choose for themselves and little zbaby girls need two pieces for diaper changing.u common sense

Devianinc · 03/02/2025 04:43

Never saw those on Long Island beaches.et everyone choose their and who care s. Too many people having an opinion. Look away

Devianinc · 03/02/2025 04:45

Have you ever tried to wear a one piece swimsuit was it’s was extremely hot. Too much material

Devianinc · 03/02/2025 04:48

And? She’s a baby

HoppingPavlova · 03/02/2025 04:52

Mine always wore bikini’s in the pool at home and one piece at the beach and swimming lessons. They claimed bikini’s were more comfortable?
They also only used a bikini under wetsuits and sun tops.

Devianinc · 03/02/2025 04:53

All little girls should be able to wear what ever the parent chooses which has no bearing on them that said, baby needs to smothered in sun block

Nerdynerdynerd · 03/02/2025 05:21

I don't think the issue is the OP sexualising the wearing of a bikini. It is perverts and predators sexualising it, of whom there are unfortunately many. I don't think it's wrong to think that this is a possible dusgusting thought process for some people and to guard against it.

Same as I don't walk alone late at night. It's not because I have murderous thoughts. It's because I'm aware that some people do and want to guard against it.

I wouldn't let my daughter wear one for the same reason I don't change her in public and teach about privacy.

Also I'd rather have my female child in just swim shorts. It's not a nipple showing issue for me. It's the fact they're dressed in something that is potentially viewed as adult by pervs. E.g. a bra is more grown up as it's to contain boobs which a young child doesn't have. Therefore putting a young child in a bra is both unnecessary and potentially appealing to pervs.

If it's in our own back garden fine but I will always be on high alert in public spaces.

So on holiday / during heatwaves you only wear a bikini all the time because anything else would just be too much material?

I think it's the opposite

chargeitup · 06/02/2025 18:16

@Letstheriveranswer

Those pics aren't bikinis though, they are two piece swim suits with vest style cropped tops
The definition of a bikini is a two piece. You may have different definition but that's on you

chargeitup · 06/02/2025 18:20

@Whatabouthow

Because those aren't bikinis..? They are crop top two piece costumes.
I think you'll find a bikini IS. Two piece swim costume. You think they aren't bikinis? Because they are.

You've picked a very strange definition of a bikini

The Oxford dictionary:

a two-piecee_ swimming costume for women.

Wiki: A bikini is a two-piece swimsuitt* primarily worn by women that features one piece on top that covers the breastss, and a second piece on the bottom: the front covering the pelviss but usually exposing the navell*, and the back generally covering the intergluteal clefttand some or all of the buttockss. The size of the top and bottom can vary, from bikinis that offer full coverage of the breasts, pelvis, and buttocks, to more revealing designs

MW dictionary: a two-piece bathing suit worn by women that does not cover the midriff

Cambridge: a two-piecee swimsuitt for women

It's a two piece with a gap. That's it.

My DD wore a bikini from about age 5 to 8. Normally something like a Mini Biden one with pants and a top more like a short vest than a bra.

She found them much easier than a swim suit for going to the toilet at the pool, a swimsuit made her worry she wouldn't get it pulled down in time. She was a skinny child who grew upwards but not outwards. A bikini could last a couple of years whereas a swimsuit would have become too short.

I think what I’ve learnt from this thread is that people view bikinis as different things. For me bikini = any two piece. My daughters wear them but they are sporty style and practical. I’d still call them a bikini though. For others bikini means something a bit more risqué/ bombshell.

NamelessNancy · 07/02/2025 10:11

Rash vest and shorts have all the practicality of being two piece plus sun protection. Sun lotion is a poor substitute for properly covering up.

Rash vests and swim leggings for us, we do a fair bit of family paddle boarding so only need to suntanlotion hands/ feet, neck and head. It’s a bit much for the pool though!

You’re right, it’s silly for little girls to wear bikini tops. They have no breasts and this sexualises an androgynous child body. They should just go topless like the boys.

Loveumagenta · 07/02/2025 11:20

Totally agree! For one, a lot of them are actually hard to swim in. They cover little so = more sun exposure and they can make older girls self conscious that they don’t actually run and play in them.
Just another way of keeping them less active than boys IMHO.

Yes, after all burkinis are two piece swimsuits…
