John Lewis Website models TOO skinny? TW

Thought I would add one for John Lewis as people were discussing M&S models.

JL landing page really shocked me.
The arms.
I know we should celebrate all women, but I find this rather a disturbing and retrogressive look.
Disclaimer:
Yes I understand thin women are real women, no I do not celebrate morbid obesity and yes I am a tall slim woman who lived through heroin chic 90s and the stick thin 00s size 00 Rachel Zoe celeb craze and it harmed my body image and resulted in an ED.

Now even JL is trying to be down with the kids and high fashion, thrusting this look in my face. Has nothing been learned?!
Not sure why I blurred some of the faces. I don’t want to attack the individuals but the overall look of the site.
If JL see this- It reminds me of ED thinspo pages from back in the day!!!!!

CLICK TO OPEN PHOTOS FULLY.
Am I being unreasonable to expect more responsible imagery from JL?

What's with all the body shaming on here today?

Did you start the M&S one too?

bloodredfeaturewall · 01/02/2025 18:27

yabu
she looks toned, not skinny

Plaided · 01/02/2025 18:27

I think she looks pretty normal! I certainly wouldn’t think anything was wrong in terms of nutrition? Quite muscular in fact.

Can you read user names?
No not body shaming. Its shaming most women for not being thin enough.

You know people can change their user name right?

Really hard to make out the arms in at least 2 photos but they look fine to me. Young women are slim.

OP I agree that the model is very thin, probably a UK size 6. I don’t think that in itself is an issue, as some women are really thin naturally, but I’d really like to see a range of body shapes and sizes in advertising.

IBlameYourMother · 01/02/2025 18:33

I agree OP, but the competitive “I only eat two salad leaves for a meal/one small meal a day/anything more than one slice of toast and a small salad a day is gluttony” crowd will arrive to tell you being painfully thin is the ideal weight. These posts only ever attract the kind of people who escalate. It’s like the food threads.

Some people are naturally very slim but I remember heroin chic too, and the damage it did.

Lentilweaver · 01/02/2025 18:34

DD is a UK 6. She's not an anorexic.

GildedRage · 01/02/2025 18:35

i guess you could write to both stores corporate office with your concerns.
depending on their height and IF the photo was photoshopped it's hard to tell if the model's build is unhealthy.
i believe the runway industry has put in place bmi guidelines. or at least it was openly discussed several years ago.
if you're interested you can do further research and as mentioned complain to the head offices involved.

European countries have taken varied approaches to curtailing use of too-thin models—will the U.S. take action, too?

What do you suggest as alternative, mannequins, flat photos of just the clothes ,or a non triggering committee approved AI?

GildedRage · 01/02/2025 18:38

since a BMI of under 18.5 is considered underweight and france is using 18 already, using models with a minimum bmi of 18.5 and annual health certificate seems like something to aim for.

SheilaWilde · 01/02/2025 18:41

What are you talking about? They aren't skinny and don't look too thin. Some people, especially if they're overweight, have a skewed sense of 'normal' and chomp at the bit when they see normal sized people. Would it also be irresponsible to use 'large' models incase it made everyone want to be overweight? Some people are naturally the size of the models, it doesn't mean they're ill.

SpiderPigSpiderPigDoesWhateverASpiderPigDoes · 01/02/2025 18:43

I think they just look like arms.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 01/02/2025 18:44

They look like photoshop fails. Even the thinnest size 6 people i know don't have arms that look like that.

ExpressCheckout · 01/02/2025 18:45

I don't know about the body shaming etc., but I do wish they'd have more older, fuller figure women and men.

MarshMallowHeather · 01/02/2025 18:49

Yes looks like a return to heroin chic. I don't know anyone in real life with arms and waist like that apart from people with eating disorders.

myplace · 01/02/2025 18:49

Arms should be wider than the elbow. They aren’t straight up and down on the majority of healthy people. They should be shaped, as legs are. A little thicker in the middle than at the wrist and elbow. Upper arm a little thicker than forearm (barring a specialist sport that builds the forearms)

cunoyerjudowel · 01/02/2025 19:08

They look fine to me, toned.

olivehater · 01/02/2025 19:16

What they don’t seem to understand is it puts people off buying. If I don’t see it on a relatively normal body I don’t know how it’s going to look like and I don’t want to take the risk ordering it.

Particularly annoys me when they are selling something thats clearly meant for someone of a certain body type. For instance a low cut dress that is designed for someone with a bit of an bust and they put on a flat chested model and it just hangs off them.

Cherry8809 · 01/02/2025 19:17

The models look fine to me - toned and pretty svelte 🤷🏻‍♀️

GildedRage · 01/02/2025 19:21

@olivehater me as well, i'm not a walking hanger and seeing dressed in particular dripping off someone makes it hard to guage if it's even worth checking out because i can't tell how it would fit on a curvy girl. i hate buying trousers on line.

IBlameYourMother · 01/02/2025 19:22

Ok I’ve been to the site and searched for bikinis. The models range from the occasional very thin, to slim, to average person on the beach to plus sized. So although I agree with my initial comment above that the pictures OP posted are of thin models, the diversity range looks fine. It’s not like the 90s, and I feel it represents a cross section of body types. I retract any of my initial outrage!
