To be concerned about what Liz Kendall is up to with disability benefits?

1000 replies

Locutus2000 · 01/02/2025 13:54

The Times reporting just how enthusiastic Labour are about targeting the disabled.

I can only hope they are getting the worst ideas out there first, if not I dread to think what is coming in the upcoming review.

I was confident Labour would at worst be no worse than the Tories.

I was wrong.

@vivainsomnia I'm sorry, you've quoted me but I don't understand your reply?

FreedomandPeace · 03/02/2025 12:46

Marilyn17 · 03/02/2025 12:41

@FreedomandPeace I'm assuming you mean standard daily rate of PIP? If so, then my husband will be required to work. Completing the PIP reassessment form is such a nightmare that each time he gets awarded standard daily rate we just accept it gratefully. It's too stressful to argue with them that he should be awarded the higher rate. You are actually threatened with having your lower award taken away completely if you dare to challenge the rate you are awarded. If this is the bar they are going to set then there will be a lot of people who are genuinely unfit to work being forced into a situation where they will become either homeless, be thrust into poverty or will commit suicide.

Tbh I have no idea what it’s called.
She gets, I think, £77/week.
Is that the standard, or is that something else?
I do know it’s PIP

How have you gone from your BIL to many? Re counselling those who make attempts on their life struggle to get anything so I doubt CMHT are falling over themselves to throw therapy at him.

Also many ND people are left to self medicate with food alcohol, drugs etc. Long wait lists are contributing to this problem.

People simply refuse to understand this reality you highlight.

Why do so many people say ' oh everyone's ND these days' and my brother's mates dog and so on. I don't understand it.

How is a heroin addict guy with MH issues going to ever be productive if there's no way of understanding why he's like this in the first place.

The number of ND people self medicating undiagnosed is probably off the scale. The number of NT people too in need of access to some useful MH support that might help. There's no help.

Who actually says when I grow up I want to be a smack head and sit on my arse all day. I don't like smack heads either, no fear there. But it's not the answer forcing people who can't. The people who can't need real accessible help.

pointythings · 03/02/2025 12:49

Locutus2000 · 03/02/2025 12:44

Who would employ him?

Exactly. People who have lost touch with work need extensive support to get a job and stay in it. That is difficult and not cheap. But in the long run, it will save money.

The hack and slash approach to benefits is short termist and ineffective.

Marilyn17 · 03/02/2025 12:49

Sounds like low rate Daily Living (£76.25)

Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

Edited

I mean nobody ends up on heroin in their late teens unless there are already major MH issues.

Yes that may right as she said there were two tiers.

@FreedomandPeace and @Boomer55 that looks like the piece is picking up the original Times one

It is positioning it as a big shake up. Hard to know what it means in practise

Agree
Wonder if Labour have put ‘it out there’ to see the mood of the public on MN et all 😳

The lack of understanding of addiction among people is horrific. Honestly, if you haven't experienced it in your family, you need to do some serious reading. I run a RL support group for people who have loved ones in addiction and it's an eye opener.

She’s made another announcement about sickness benefit, UC and PIP/DLA:
🙄

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/dwp-sick-benefits-universal-credit-pip-assessment-b2690289.html

It is not an announcement it is speculation via The Times.

I am only saying this because people may panic that everything in that article is actually going to happen. We just don't know yet, it is all up in the air until.we see the green paper.

@FreedomandPeace if a Labour MP does look at SM, on this thread at least those who vote for them still sound like they would

I think many who didn’t vote for them would also be in agreement but then I don’t personally vote for a particular party i vote on policies so maybe I don’t see the type so much.
Plus I don’t recognise many user names ( from last years election threads ) as they switch so much. Except yours Eastern as you’re a rare breed on MN not in the switching game…..unlike me 🥴

EasternStandard · 03/02/2025 13:10

@FreedomandPeace yes they may pick up other votes, which I'm guessing is part of it as well as having lower funding available

If politicians put out statements to test the water I'd say having supporters still back you even if it impacts them is music to their ears

LadyKenya · 03/02/2025 13:14

Feelingathomenow · 03/02/2025 12:11

Actually many do. My BIL spent most of his late teens/early 20s off his head on smack. Left him with mental health issues. Does sweet FA refuses to take part in counselling because it’s “too hard” literally sits on his arse all day - his elderly dad has to manage his money for him etc. If he didn’t get that support then he might have to get work.

No doubt here are people who can’t work, but there are many who just deem it too difficult to sort themselves out and take sm easy route.

He sounds like he would struggle to hold down a job, without significant support. He is not even able to manage his own money, according to your post.

But for the majority, those assets are in the property that they live in

Yes - and they are expected to sell it to fund care in most cases.

Tbh I would not go Labour after all this.

I'd feel sick going Tory.

I'd be looking at any alternative that I could comfortably support yet know that might be a wasted vote.

And quite right too. If you’re in a care home your house is redundant.

Enya321 · 03/02/2025 13:34

It’s easy to say that the ones off sick should be doing things to get back into work, but the support is rarely ever there nor anywhere near substantial enough

To be fair, there are a number of usernames here which haven't changed in a long time, my own included.

You can see why assistance in dying is going to be appealing to some people.

I understand tbh that if you have a home it's unfair to not contribute. But it's equally a huge punch in the face.

SlapTheMelon · 03/02/2025 13:39

EarlyM0rnibg · 03/02/2025 08:45

It isn’t though, there are similar issues in other countries.

Not really. I am from a much poorer Asian country. We don't have a safety net like the UK, so life is harder there but people seem tougher. They aren't like soft tofus that crumble when adversity happens. I sometimes wonder what happened to you Brits? You used to kick ass and were bad asses, now you've become so soft.
