Down with knickers!

The last time I bought knickers (Primark) after wearing them once before washing them I found after three washes the elastic had become so loose I've had to throw them away (thank god I wear jeans)! I did complain to the shop that they weren't fit for purpose and was told it wasn't their problem because they are not the makers!

YANBU thinking that the shop has a responsibility to act if they have sold something that's not fit for purpose but I have to wonder how exactly you are washing your knickers, as I've never had any issue with Primark knickers.

Bignanna · 01/02/2025 15:24

Knickers from M&S never wear out! I’ve had them for years. However their socks frequently go into holes in the heel area after a short time, but Primarks last longer. I’ve had some clothes from Primark that have lasted for years, eg pyjamas and cardigan. They’re often made of the same fabric, and probably made in the same sweatshop!

Because they let people take it into the changing room to try on.

Not in any of the Primark stores I have been in (which over the years will have been dozens of different branches).

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 01/02/2025 16:44

M&S are crap now, they seem to have shrunk the width of the gussets, can't use a sanitary pad properly.

My best knickers at the moment are from Sainsburys.

DistractMe · 01/02/2025 13:13

Maybe buy better knickers?

Goods should be fit for purpose regardless of whether they're from a budget outlet, though...

Houndown · 02/02/2025 05:57

I've used Primark since they first opened because I have always had a budget to live on, they suit me as I'm not fashion conscious and in all the years of using them I've never had to return anything as it was faulty in anyway. I still shop there and will continue to do so but maybe it was just a one off but to have a whole pack of 5 knickers with the same fault seemed wrong.

Sloggis all the way! I'm sure some of mine are 10 years old.

My Asda knickers have been holding up well for a year + and they don’t go up my bum.

I find most pants nowerdays have really narrow gussets. I think Im quite normal
sized in that area and usually find them really uncomfortable.

I buy all my underwear from Asda. Would
recommend. Last ages, decent gusset.

So, the title should read 'Down with Primarni knickers' really?

Pianoaholic · 01/02/2025 14:31

I haven't found m & s packs of knickers much good recently. The quality has deteriorated, I have had to chuck some after a few wears as they went into holes!

Same. And the last ones I bought from next might as well have been made of paper the disintegrated after a few washes. Shame because they were really comfortable the elastic was great though.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 01/02/2025 14:30

Buy cheap buy twice.

I refuse to buy from Primark as the price point is so cheap I can only imagine the conditions under which the clothes are produced. However I'm aware that I'm fortunate to be in a position where I can choose.

I buy most of my knickers from British Boxers and they wash and wear brilliantly. I've also bought some knickers from M&S but the quality isn't as good.

I had a look at British Boxers,
£156 for boxer shorts (4 pack).
Yikes!

Good news, they're currently at half price, so a bargain basement £78!

Cunningfungus · 02/02/2025 07:45

matalan do sloggi-like knickers for a quarter of the price. Great fit (including nicely covering a muffin top), no seams or tags, just the right amount of elasticity. Absolutely brilliant!

Primark selling poor quality clothes shocker!

Exactly

Augustus40 · 02/02/2025 08:15

Asda does good knickers.

PeachPumpkin · 02/02/2025 09:32

I’m surprised that so many have had success either Asda knickers. They are a good price but I’ve stopped buying them as I found they fall apart quickly.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 02/02/2025 09:44

@BuoyOhBuoy I didn't pay anything like that! I think I paid £25 for a pack of 4. I've bought 3 packs in total as the knickers are so comfortable.

DerryleaDunker · 02/02/2025 10:02

Can't say I've ever had any issue with Primark knickers. I've had pairs last years without fault.

Do wish they'd bring back the thicker waistband thongs they sold many moons ago though.

feelingrobbed · 02/02/2025 10:22

Primark knickers are the worst. I get most of my Pyjamas and underwear in the M&S January sales.
Works out cheaper than Primark but tricky as can't guarantee they'll have all the sizes.

mitogoshigg · 02/02/2025 10:26

Sainsburys are fine, they last a good time plus aren't expensive to start with.

I do however (hijacking thread a little) want to know if anyone has suggestions for quick drying knickers ideally as light as possible (but not thongs!) for backpacking ... I need to be able to wash then dry overnight (cost not an issue as only buying 3 pairs)

Funderthighs · 02/02/2025 10:31

I buy mine from Sainsbury’s Tu range. They last forever.

LazyArsedMagician · 02/02/2025 11:57

I get my knickers from Asda or Tesco in the five pack and haven't had this issue.

Spend that extra quid OP you won't regret it!

I swear by these M&S type. Comfy (for me, anyway, this may obviously vary according to body shape), moderately priced though not dirt cheap, and because they're lace they should dry in minutes.

I either buy from M & S or Tesco. Never had any issues with either. My occasional experience of other supermarket home brands has also been that they aren't bad either.

Primark are shite. I used to buy the occasional stuff there when the DDs were young and Primark still relatively new in this country. I soon realised that, no matter what it was, the quality was terrible and I stopped. It didn't even last until the DDs had outgrown it, so could neither be handed down nor charity shopped.

I haven't set foot in Primark for many years.
