Neighbour’s dogs poo outside our house every day Wwyd?

ThisBrickPombear · 31/01/2025 23:44

We have a footpath that runs down the side of our house. Our kitchen window looks straight onto it and my DC use it every day to walk to school. We live on an estate and the footpath goes all the way round in a loop. It’s very popular with dog walkers who are mostly very respectful. We have a dog ourselves so no issues with dogs.

I have is an elderly neighbour who has two very aggressive terrier type dogs. He walks past at least twice a day and his dogs poo on the path right outside my house in the same spot every single day. And he doesn’t pick it up. I know it’s him as I’ve seen him on my security camera.

The problem is that this man has dementia, lives on his own and has very poor eyesight. My cleaner also cleans for him and tells me the dogs regularly poo inside his house and wee on his bed and he doesn’t notice. I can’t talk to him about the poo as I can’t get close when I see him as his dogs go mental and I’m genuinely scared of them. I wonder if he just can’t see the poo to pick it up? On the other hand My neighbours have seen him kick it into the gutter rather than picking it up.

I really sympathise with him but equally I’m heartily fed up of picking up dog shit every day and me and my DC stepping in it frequently. I don’t want to look out of my kitchen window onto a pile of stinking dog crap every day.

What should I do?

We had a problem with cats using our patch of grass at the front of our house and it was killing it. DH bought a couple of ultrasonic carers from Amazon. When an animal triggers them , they let out a sound that deters the cats. We were both a bit sceptical, and it took a few weeks of tweaking the frequency and intensity settings but they have worked. No more cat muck. They do look a bit silly, and they recharge by solar, but during the winter we have had to charge them through a usb charger, but that is lesd effort than scraping up their deposits. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cowiewie-Ultrasonic-Deterrents-Ultrasound-Waterproof/dp/B0CZ36Y28M?pd_rd_w=G8IsZ&content-id=amzn1.sym.477c3f75-11ae-44c5-85f6-0c471d0c96a8&pf_rd_p=477c3f75-11ae-44c5-85f6-0c471d0c96a8&pf_rd_r=0GYSQ5QSQGY21R3VR90W&pd_rd_wg=YjIRM&pd_rd_r=601ec68a-5420-404c-9017-902259d3262b&pd_rd_i=B0CZ36Y28M&psc=1&ref_=pd_bap_m_grid_dv_rp_0_19_nped_t

I'd ask his cleaner to speak to him.

If that doesn't work, send the footage to the council and let them deal with it.

If he has dementia it may be that he'll need someone to walk the dogs with him.

JollyViper · 31/01/2025 23:56

Surely he knows that the poo is leaving the dog and therefore needs dealing with?! Have you tried speaking to him?

Thelnebriati · 31/01/2025 23:57

Scents that dogs don't like include orange oil and pepper. Lidl do a very pungent ground white pepper that isn't expensive, sprinkle that around liberally just before they leave the house.

HereForTheAnimals · 01/02/2025 00:02

White pepper probably will work. Just sprinkle it all down the footpath. You will have to reapply regularly though.

It's really tricky OP. I'd probably just keep picking his dog's shit up in this situation tbh.

Greycatclub · 01/02/2025 00:19

Sorry OP but as he has dementia it’s fairly unlikely anyone speaking to him will make a difference. It would need to be someone walking with him (which in reality you probably can’t influence much).

What should I do?

Fellow dog-owner here. I had this problem with someone who was allowing their large dog to poo outside my gate. It was occurring overnight. I solved it by rinsing the area with a bucket of bleach and water on a daily basis. Dogs shy away from the smell of bleach and will toilet elsewhere. There's not been a reoccurrence since.
I do feel sorry for the old man, bless him, personally I wouldn't say anything to anyone.

Did you miss the dementia bit?

@ThisBrickPombear has he family you can speak to?

No I didn't but thanks for asking.
He clearly knows the dogs need to go out having dementia doesn't mean he is completely incompetent, hence asking if she's actually spoken to him regarding it.

Temporaryname158 · 01/02/2025 00:28

I agree that bleach and water should solve it, however I think I would make a report to adult social care if the cleaner has reported they do this in the house and wee in the bed. He may not have capacity and needs support, they can professionally assess that

Abitofalark · 01/02/2025 00:29

Does your local council have a dog warden?

Seriouslynonono · 01/02/2025 00:29

Spray the poo with bright pink spray paint - that might help bring it the attention of whoever is doing it.
It might not only be who you think it is. I've noticed that if one person leaves dog poo other people start doing it to.

No, it doesn't mean he is completely incompetent, but what it might mean is that he doesn't have any recognition of what is happening is wrong and therefore a conversation is probably futile.

JollyViper · 01/02/2025 00:32

But she could try speaking to him, why does the cleaner telling him make it any clearer to him? @HereForTheAnimals

HereForTheAnimals · 01/02/2025 00:36

@JollyViper I don't think it does? What is the cleaner telling him?

JollyViper · 01/02/2025 00:41

Pizzapunk suggested it , ask them why they think that? @HereForTheAnimals

mathanxiety · 01/02/2025 00:42

Call elder care services of your local authority.

If what your cleaner says is true, he needs help.

All you can do about the poo really is to hose it off the path.

I don't really think it does but the OP said she can't get near the bloke due to the dogs.

zerogrey · 01/02/2025 00:50

He's got dementia, he probably loves his dogs and can't manage properly so don't complain about him, HELP him. He's part of your community.

Wingedharpy · 01/02/2025 01:34

TBH with his dementia, you could speak to him about it today and he may well have forgotten by tomorrow.

NuffSaidSam · 01/02/2025 01:37

I'd just pick up the dog poo. If he's elderly and has dementia to the point that the dogs wee and poo in his house he's not going to be living independently for much longer anyway. Look on it as your good deed for the day.

altmember · 01/02/2025 01:56

If I was 100% sure if was his dog's, I'd collect it up and throw it in his garden. If he's too blind and demented to see his dogs shitting on the pavement then he won't notice it in his garden will he.

DPotter · 01/02/2025 02:14

I suggesting applying jeyes fluid to the whole area - same idea as the bleach. Dilute with water and then apply along the path and adjacent to your garden wall / house. Animals wee / poo in the same spots to mark their territory as much for relieving themselves. The bleach or jeyes will mask their scent and be unpleasant and encourage them to mark elsewhere.

Astitichintimesaveswine · 01/02/2025 10:01

I've had this issue and had success with white vinegar sprayed over the area.

Spondoolies · 01/02/2025 10:06

My local council, you can report dog fouling online and they come and clear it up, im pretty sure they must have sprayed something down as it deterred the dogs after that.
