Neighbour’s dogs poo outside our house every day Wwyd?

We have a footpath that runs down the side of our house. Our kitchen window looks straight onto it and my DC use it every day to walk to school. We live on an estate and the footpath goes all the way round in a loop. It’s very popular with dog walkers who are mostly very respectful. We have a dog ourselves so no issues with dogs.

I have is an elderly neighbour who has two very aggressive terrier type dogs. He walks past at least twice a day and his dogs poo on the path right outside my house in the same spot every single day. And he doesn’t pick it up. I know it’s him as I’ve seen him on my security camera.

The problem is that this man has dementia, lives on his own and has very poor eyesight. My cleaner also cleans for him and tells me the dogs regularly poo inside his house and wee on his bed and he doesn’t notice. I can’t talk to him about the poo as I can’t get close when I see him as his dogs go mental and I’m genuinely scared of them. I wonder if he just can’t see the poo to pick it up? On the other hand My neighbours have seen him kick it into the gutter rather than picking it up.

I really sympathise with him but equally I’m heartily fed up of picking up dog shit every day and me and my DC stepping in it frequently. I don’t want to look out of my kitchen window onto a pile of stinking dog crap every day.

What should I do?

If I was 100% sure if was his dog's, I'd collect it up and throw it in his garden. If he's too blind and demented to see his dogs shitting on the pavement then he won't notice it in his garden will he.

And when you think people can go no lower...

I'd just pick up the dog poo. If he's elderly and has dementia to the point that the dogs wee and poo in his house he's not going to be living independently for much longer anyway. Look on it as your good deed for the day.

Not saying OP should do this but I would do the same, to prevent my kids stepping in it. It's not like the guy is young and just doesn't give a monkeys, he's mentally in a place where he's unaware his dogs are fouling in the house. That's not a malicious act to not see/notice that his dogs have pooed on the footpath.

I've got poo bags for use at home (my cat's litter tray and outside in the garden, lots of foxes, hedgehogs and probably other people's cats) so I'd just clear it up out of public spirit. It's not nice but better than people treading in it and spreading it all over.

I he has dementia the you, the cleaner, another neighbour or the police speaking to him might have no effect. I think your choices are ignore it or pick it up. Nothing else is acceptable.

JollyViper · 31/01/2025 23:56

Surely he knows that the poo is leaving the dog and therefore needs dealing with?! Have you tried speaking to him?

Surely someone with dementia has the cognitive ability to understand and deal with this one specific thing, right?

Yes put up a sign for the man with dementia, good idea

Lavender14 · 01/02/2025 10:49

Is there a dog warden in your area?

I'd send the footage to your local council and an accompanying email explaining his circumstances.

Again if she had a conversation with him, maybe not at the time the dogs are toileting she can get an idea of his cognitive ability. Dementia doesn't just have one level.

Honestly, if I knew my neighbour had dementia and was struggling to the extent that he slept in bed with dog poo, I would just pick it up and see it as my "good deed" for the day.

Call elder care services of your local authority.

If what your cleaner says is true, he needs help.

All you can do about the poo really is to hose it off the path.

Agree - if he is struggling so much perhaps social care need to be involved.

And I know I will get jumped on for saying this, so I am simply going to point out that it is a fact and won't be arguing about it - if someone has a disability which prevents them from picking up, they are exempted from the legislation. I say that as someone who is severely disabled but who can manage to pick up 999 times out of 1000, and who is regularly pissed off by having my mobility scooter covered in shit that able-bodied people can't be arsed to pick up.

Scents that dogs don't like include orange oil and pepper. Lidl do a very pungent ground white pepper that isn't expensive, sprinkle that around liberally just before they leave the house.

🤦🏻‍♀️ don’t put chemicals where animals are, this is stupid advice. More harmful to nature. Jesus Christ.

Who are you calling an idiot? I use water and bleach to disinfect my yard and have for 30 years, the concentration isn't strong enough to burn a dog's paws. Are you not aware how extraordinarily good a dog's scenting ability is? Perhaps instead of being so presumptuous and rude, you should read a book or two.

Brightredtulips · 01/02/2025 12:25

Be kind. Just shovel it up and put i bin. His only pleasure may be his dog's, he has someone popping in to clean, he's mobile for now. Are you hoping his gogs are taken off him? His dogs are making him go out and walk. Perhaps he'll fall over if he bends down. It won't be forever.

Call adult social services.

it sounds like he needs more support.

LookItsMeAgain · 01/02/2025 12:38

My advice - even with your own dogs around, I'd be getting some of this stuff (or the gel crystals that dissolve over a number of weeks) to deter the man's dogs from pooping where you don't want them to.

Rude and ageist - wow.

Ad hominem is never a good debating style, it just indicates a lack of maturity.
I'm not the only one to advocate bleach in this thread, why haven't you taken issue with them?
Now bore off.

LookItsMeAgain · 01/02/2025 12:45

I'd like to add that I'm not suggesting that the OP uses the whole container in one go (as that would be overwhelming) - but if you read the instructions is says to clean up the deposit, pour water with some washing up liquid in it (helps break down any remaining fecal matter) and then sprinkle some over the area. If it rains, sprinkle again but after a few days, the dogs will learn that they don't like pooping outside your home.

JollyViper · 31/01/2025 23:56

With dementia it will sometimes get to the point where the sufferer is incapable of reliably dealing with the poo that's leaving their own body, never mind a pet. Going round and talking to him about the dog mess is probably not going to solve this issue. He sounds like he really needs more help than he's getting, it's so sad.

PizzaPunk · 31/01/2025 23:55

I'd ask his cleaner to speak to him.

If that doesn't work, send the footage to the council and let them deal with it.

If he has dementia it may be that he'll need someone to walk the dogs with him.

Might be better if she gives cleaner a note from her to be read to neighbour to explain the problem.
