Posting for traffic. Getting my DC car insurance quotes and it asked when the car was bought. We are giving him our car so I put the date we bought it. I have the receipt for that. We have been the registered keepers since then and just this week transferred the car to him as the registered keeper.

Today DC (17) has had an email saying they are auditing and he needs to send off his v5 (which we don't have yet).

My question is, will they think he (we) lied on the application? We didn't intentionally, it's when the car was bought, but is that what they were asking? The policy just says "date bought:" with the date we bought it (he hasn't bought it ever), it didnt ask when he became the registered keeper. I'm feeling really stressed about it, I tried to do this properly, and I'm worried I've massively fucked up.

I will ring them with him tomorrow and can send proof of the date we bought etc, but will he have his insurance cancelled?

Ring them ASAP?

NoOneKnowsWhoYouAre · 31/01/2025 09:35

I can't, I need him with me as he holds the policy in his name. He is at school then work today

I would still call and explain that he can call tomorrow to put your mind at rest...

araiwa · 31/01/2025 09:44

Who owned the car when the policy started?

If it wasn't him, how much later did you transfer ownership to him?

NoOneKnowsWhoYouAre · 31/01/2025 09:48

Registered to DH it was bought years ago by DH

Transferred to him this week

So he didn’t own the car when you took out the insurance and you said he did?

Did you specify the registered keeper at the time was your DH at least as this is the crucial point.

NoOneKnowsWhoYouAre · 31/01/2025 09:53

No, it asked when the car was bought, so I said when it was bought.

Didn't it mean when was it was bought by your son. As he is the person on the policy down as the owner.

Everybodywantstoruletheworld2025 · 31/01/2025 09:56

DH owned the car and was the registered keeper when you took out insurance on the car in your DS’s name? Is this correct?

It doesn’t matter who owns the car it matters who the registered keeper was when you took out the insurance. That is the crucial point. Did you at least answer this correctly at the time?

HappiestSleeping · 31/01/2025 09:56

The registered keeper is not necessarily the legal owner, so you have not lied. You have owned the car since the day you bought it. You are just transferring the V5 to show your son as the registered keeper.

CombatBarbie · 31/01/2025 09:56

I think they are probably thinking he should have been the registered driver on the V5 and the dates (age) don't match. It's no biggie, just call them and explain.

Needspaceforlego · 31/01/2025 09:57

Ring them.
They'll mean the date it was bought by him for £0 ie the day you signed it over.

See this is what I'm now thinking, but when I was answering the question I thought it was when cash was handed over for the car. It's a big ambiguous.

The policy is in his name so I can't call them, he has to. I'm not sure whether to ring them and tell them or just send off the evidence.

The minutiae of any insurance policy can only be explained by the insurers. Why not ask them?

Needspaceforlego · 31/01/2025 10:07

Insurance companies are normally open late. Get him to call them when he gets home.

You can't hold Insurance if you're not the registered keeper. Remember they can access the DVLA records.

Don't panic they are just trying to make sure the records stack up which they currently don't.
They'll give time to clear it up before they attempt to cancel the policy and they'd give warning that they were cancelling

Magnastorm · 31/01/2025 10:09

"You can't hold Insurance if you're not the registered keeper"

Yes, you can. How do you think company leases etc work?

OP, it won't be an issue, just call up and explain.

LtJudyHopps · 31/01/2025 10:09

You don’t have to call about his specific policy just call their help line and ask the question about the scenario. That way you will know today instead of wondering.

Everybodywantstoruletheworld2025 · 31/01/2025 10:09

So long as you declared DH as the registered keeper it will be fine. If not they may accuse your DS of fraud. How long before the insurance was taken out and the V5 was transferred?

Did you at least declare your DH as the registered keeper at the time you took out the insurance? This is a question they always ask before giving you insurance.

Of course you can. Lease vehicles work that way. The lease company owns it and the lessee insures it. But the lessee does not own the vehicle, nor do they hold the V5.

OP you are fine, just explain that the date the family bought the car is what you stated but you transferred the ownership to your son on xxx date. Its probably flagged because there was a date anomaly.

Edited

DC is the registered keeper from a few days before the policy started. The car was bought years ago.

The V5 you have sent off or done online will list DC as the registered keeper from before the policy started? There should be no problems. Just say the V5 is delayed and you will send it to them as soon as you get it.

When was the policy bought and when was the V5 sent off?

It is the registered keeper that is the most important not who owns it.

Wonderfulstuff · 31/01/2025 10:49

Don't panic. Just call them. DH accidentally mistyped the years of NCD and only realised when they asked for the proof. He called them and they adjusted the policy and he paid an extra £40. No harm.

RitaFromTheRanch · 31/01/2025 11:14

Don't worry. It'll be okay once he calls them

I hope it is that simple. This is a genuine mistake. I'll wait for the V5 to arrive the send it off.
