To ask if anyone uses the ‘dial’ ‘analogue’ radios anymore ?

I bought myself one of these traditional dial radios back in 2016 but I’ve really hardly ever used it. I listen to everything now through BBC sounds and sometimes on TV, and other radio apps on my phones.

Thing is with my dial radio the reception isn’t that good on it and I can’t be bothered to use it!

i just wondered if dial radios were still widely used?

My mum.

She has dementia and she can remember how to use it,

Ilovelowry · 30/01/2025 12:16

DH uses one in the greenhouse which I bought so he could listen to 5live for grainy sports reporting. Apparently it's more authentic then. 😊

WeegieGrannie · 30/01/2025 12:19

I use an analogue personal radio because connectivity in my house is pathetic. I also have two old ghetto blasters where the analogue radio is the only function that still works. And I can still remember the wavelengths for my favourite stations.

MintTwirl · 30/01/2025 12:19

I have an old Roberts radio and use her every day, she’s called Betty.

ChristmasFluff · 30/01/2025 12:22

I have an old analogue radio that I use when I'm decorating - covered with plaster, paint, wallpaper paste etc, and it still works. It has a cassette player in it, and that still works too - to play my 5 remaining cassettes.

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 30/01/2025 12:28

Yes, I’ve been a radio addict for more years than I care to remember, and have an old Roberts by the side of the bed, another in the kitchen and an even older Hacker in the conservatory. All analogue, all still sound good to me, and I reckon I spend more time listening to the radio than watching TV.

Streaming services are great, and I love a good podcast but there’s something - as a previous poster said - “authentic” - about a portable radio.

Aaah, the wavelength jingles! I still remember 275 to 285 being Radio 1(yikes, prior to FM when I was listening to it!) and 88 to 91 FM Radio 2. But I have no idea where Radio Four is, even though that's the station I listen to. It's never had a jingle!

TheSeaOfTranquility · 30/01/2025 12:41

I still have an old analogue radio/CD player in the kitchen, but I very rarely use it. The problem is, I invariably switch it on halfway through a programme, or miss a bit when I go to answer the door etc. So I prefer to listen to radio programmes or podcasts via my phone, right from the beginning, and rewind if I miss a bit.

It isn't very eco though.

ThinWomansBrain · 30/01/2025 12:56

it's digital rather than dial, but like OP I listen to everything via alexa or my phone, and my broadband died last week and took a few days to get sorted. Bought a cheap FM radio as an alternative to using up all my mobile data - ultra frustrating, but at least I could still have R4 on.
I was surprised at how cheaply DAB radios are now, £20 in Argos- but equally aware of how many expensive DAB radios I've purchased over the years that have just stopped working - old dial radios and transistors used to go on forever

Mishmashs · 30/01/2025 13:02

Yep, we have one in the kitchen and listen to the radio 4 news at 7-8am and 5/6pm. I find it better quality than via my bbc sounds phone app (which I listen to upstairs).

MaisonCupcakeBlog · 30/01/2025 13:04

We have an old Roberts one that was a wedding present before digital ones really took off. It looks lovely but has too volumes: inaudible and deafening. It lives in the bathroom now and I use it when I'm in the shower.

MuddlingMackem · 30/01/2025 13:07

"275, 285 and stereo VHF" as the jingle - don't forget that bit.

Did you always catch the end of Sing Something Simple after retuning to VHF for the chart countdown on Sundays. 🙂

I still have a 1988 vintage ghetto blaster upstairs for the radio and a late 90s vintage radio / CD player in the kitchen for the radio.

Growing up, my dad would always listen to the radio 4 news, which usually coincided with tea time so we all had to listen too. I groaned at the time, but looking back I think it was a good thing.

I only use an analogue radio at work (where I tried to change the channel but sadly found my workplace is in a bit of a radio blackspot and my preferred channels don't work there so have to put up with the one channel that does work well), and on shorter journeys in the car, when I can't be bothered to connect my phone and put on absolute radio 90s

TeenToTwenties · 30/01/2025 13:50

Me, I do.
One in the kitchen I was given for Christmas 1983, a kind of boom box one.
And one in the bathroom, not sure how old that is.

RagzRebooted · 30/01/2025 13:52

Yes, we have one in the kitchen. We have Alexas in other rooms, but I like to keep my battery powered normal radio in the kitchen. No fussing with WiFi and don't need a plug socket.

MereDintofPandiculation · 30/01/2025 14:00

I use FM as well as DAB in the car.

I also have a working crystal set somewhere

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 30/01/2025 14:17

My 13 year old. No idea why.

Aaaah!!! Yes! I'd forgotten the bit about stereo VHF!

Some of us had parents who insisted we listened to Sing Something Simple in its hideous entirety, every Sunday in Summer, when we would go for a 'drive' with grandparents or other relatives, and have a picnic tea at a local beauty spot or stately home. NIGHTMARE MEMORIES! 😬

muddyford · 30/01/2025 15:37

Yes , all the time. I might use BBC Sounds a couple of times a weeI but mostly it's a radio tuned to R4.. Not dial though, strip across the top and a knob to locate the station.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 30/01/2025 15:42

Ahhhh, Sing Something Slowed Down. I swear they could have made the Ace of Spades sound depressing

Wish I had one that worked off batteries during the recent power cut. Usually listen on TV or laptop now. Defo getting a little analogue portable now!

That can be read in more than one way 😂

I've got an FM/MW/LW/SW radio but it's strictly for shit-hits-the-fan scenarios. It's more that I don't listen to radio though. If I did, maybe it would be analogue.
