I've been here off and on for a while. I find many of the threads very negative and depressing, but that's not the real issue. The real issue is that no matter what you say, no matter how innocuous or harmless, there's always a nasty comment or a troll or someone twisting your words or being humourless or just being awkward for the sake of it. And there are always multiple people who blame the poster, no matter how bad a time they're having. There was a thread the other day from someone who'd suffered a painful dog bite needing a number of stitches, and people upset the victim enough to cause her to withdraw her thread.

There's virtually no humour here and precious few laughs. I don't know what MN can really do about so many posters who are determined to bring others down. Either way, I feel I'm better served doing almost anything else rather than hanging out on MN. It's too caustic to be a good use of time.

I'd hope to have some laughs here, but the only truly funny thread in about a year of lurking was the one a few months ago about the alluring face.

OK, I'm off to read something worthwhile/bake/clean/resurrect my piano-playing, basically anything more positive and productive than being on MN, which is almost everything!

Mumsnet-particularly AIBU I have to say-is the way it because it is the way it is. If it wasn't the way it is, it wouldn't be the way it is. Or something like that.

Thus it ever was. I have been around a while and it hasn't much changed. Definitely need a thick skin for AIBU. I agree with pps OP-take a bit of a break if it gets you down-the internet generally can be a pretty cruel place sometimes.

You're going to have to cancel the entire internet then.

Or the whole of human society.

Or the whole of human society.

I think in general, human society is not as harsh as the internet.
Many people feel safer sat behind a keyboard than they would with face to face contact.
I often imagine the keyboard warriors, spouting their insults online , are sad little men and women who wouldn't dare boo to a goose in the real world.😳

Eyerollexpert · 31/01/2025 12:54

The comments need a disagree button, so when ppl are negative the poster can judge the kind of reaction they get.

JandamiHash · 31/01/2025 12:59

The ones who have sense of humour failures are ruining MN for the rest of us. I’ve just posted in a lighthearted thread about “What “old lady” won’t you be doing?”. I said I’ve told my family if I ever wear my glasses on a chain to take me into the woods and shoot me. Some bore has come along to tell me how nasty I am. Honestly is there a place for there humourless twerps that they can go and be miserable together and leave MN alone?

I have read that thread and posted on it too...I see no harm in it, and I am probably an 'old lady' myself.😄

Perhaps our sense of humour is not appreciated, I tell my kids I don't want a funeral, just throw my ashes anywhere but keep them all together, I don't want to get to the next life with a leg missing because DD2 has had it turned into a necklace 😂

WigglyVonWaggly · 31/01/2025 13:23

Do what I do. Read the OPs posts only. Reply to them alone. Then you see the initial info and offer advice without having to pay much attention to others wading in unless the OP quotes them. Turn off all reply notifications / quotes. I never see if people insult me or are rude - I don’t care what strangers I’m not even replying to think about my views!

loll

When my Dad died, I was looking into a ring with some of his ashes in it.
My DM was horrified at the thought
My Sons found it hilarious (as my DDad would have done too) and were saying things like "She wants to wear Grandpa" and "Grandpa is being turned into a ring".

He wasn't though as I didn't get a ring. They are beautiful but way out my price range.

We're all terribly sorry not to have entertained you sufficiently, I'm sure.

Couldn't resist could you?

Pleased to report that since stepping away from MN and all its negativity a day and a half ago, I have read almost half of a book about Anne Frank. MUCH better use of time!

The internet is suffering from the new POTUS's tactic of shock and awe. This has resulted in increased nastiness, lies, suspicion, impatience and fuckwittery.

I'm hoping it dies down soon.

Edited

Is it a new one OP or was it her diary?

ThisFluentBiscuit · 31/01/2025 20:03

@JandamiHash It's new - well, April 2024. It's written by Anne's best friend, Hannah Pick-Goslar, who is an intelligent and observant writer like Anne. It's about the experience of German Jews who had fled to Holland, and takes you through the eventual German invasion of Holland and the slow stripping away of all rights of German Jewish refugees in Amsterdam, and the way they were all eventually deported east. Hannah was in the camps. I'm just up to where she's recovering after liberation.

Hannah lived next door to Anne and they were childhood playmates and then teenage friends. They spent a lot of time together, and so did their families. Well worth a read.

I must warn you though, it's quite distressing. It really captures how impossible the Germans made life for Jewish refugees and the descriptions of the camps aren't easy, either.

The book's title is MY FRIEND ANNE FRANK.

I just started this as an e-audiobook. The narrator is very good.
So far the book is distressing, of course, but well-written and important.
