Did any of you watch this last night?

I was sobbing. Big, heaving sobs, which I couldn't control. Thank goodness for DH and his strong embrace although he was telling me that I am WAY too sensitive on things like this.

But am I?

Those poor kids.

I caught some of that prog and had to switch off. Hideous abusive behaviour, terrifying children and warping their minds. Where in the Bible does it say "Shout at children till they cry and tell them everyone else will go to Hell"? Grrr..

lol at UQD

Wish I'd seen the end bit about the crystal meth and the rent boy now. I thought the adults were verging on mentally ill tbh.

A FDLS BLOG

I'm lost in this. And I want to throw my PC out of the window, it's winding me up so much.

Gen 22:10 * And* Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son

Because he believed that there was a god up there who had specifically told him too.

Abraham would have understood these people perfectly. If you start from the position that god exists and your children will be in heaven for eternity then anything you do to them now to help them get there is justified.

I'm sure Ted Haggard will attempt something of a comeback.

I am mildly amused by the pronouncements of doom from people on the thread about us fundies.

I can confidently tell you that the people involved in most bible camps would completely disown the FLDS, and I'm sure the FLDS wouldn't be happy to be connected to mainstream bible camps, being a extreme separatist cult and all.

Iamthedoctor · 08/05/2008 21:25

I only compared them because they are BOTH forms of brainwashing.

this is making me larf tonight!

theAfkaUrbanDryad · 08/05/2008 21:28

"No, everyone is born Christian. Only later in life do people choose to stray from Jesus and worship satan instead. Atheists have the greatest "cover" of all, they insist they believe in no god yet most polls done and the latest research indicates that they are actually a different sect of Muslims."

I mean, what??

amytheearwaxbanisher · 08/05/2008 21:31

i saw that very sad poor little brainwashed tots

Iamthedoctor · 08/05/2008 21:37

DH has just said that I am obsessed. Maybe. All I said was that I want to go over there and help 'escapees'. I think he is being unreasonable!

While I completely agree that the sort of people featured here are completely fucking mental and that there are many people who are Christians who are perfectly nice, healthy, friendly, sociable folks who just happen to believe in one particular religion (just like there are plenty of Muslims who don't believe that women should all wear burquas or that suicide bombing is at all a good thing), what is scary about this is that it's still regarded as OK for religion to be peddled in schools and for religious organisations to get state funding for doing social work. Because if you give religion (of all and any kind) privilieged status then it makes it a lot easier for nutters to start doing serious damage to children and vulnerable people with this sort of horrible hate-peddling.

LittleBella · 08/05/2008 22:19

This doesn't surprise me at all. Look at all those "beat your children" books these loony american "christians" produce. Crazy American fundamentalists are every bit as nuts as Islamic suicide bombers but unfortunately slightly more dangerous as they actually have some access to real political and military power.

theAfkaUrbanDryad · 08/05/2008 22:20

Not to mention tax-free status Madamez...

RubberDuck · 08/05/2008 22:28

Am watching it now on YouTube... am I the only one who desperately wants to adopt Rachel and take her away from it all? Poor kid

Swore at the anti-evolution bit too.

amytheearwaxbanisher · 08/05/2008 22:40

no rubber i would love to take her and give her a normal fun childhood she seemed so intelligant bright as a button but brainwashed

mumeeee · 08/05/2008 22:40

I am a Christian and agree with Lauriefairycake. This stuff is over the top americans.

RubberDuck · 08/05/2008 22:42

I'd like to say it was just over the top americans. But having once been an evangelical christian (and yes, I was "recruited" at a summer camp as a kid too) then I can certainly see echoes here. Complacency is lunacy.

Greyriverside · 08/05/2008 23:44

Had to laugh to see that as an atheist I'm actually a different sect of Muslims. Lots of more stable religious people see atheism as a religion as it happens.

many people who are Christians who are perfectly nice, healthy, friendly, sociable folks who just happen to believe in one particular religion

Lauriefairycake · 08/05/2008 23:58

Do not get that confused, I'm a Christian and do not believe in Christian schools at all (apart from bible school in church on a Sunday and only if chosen)

I would not send my children to a Church of England or Catholic school. My dh who is a secondary school teacher and a local preacher is vehemently against church and state being together on schooling.

Most liberal christians think church and state should be separate on everything.

Church should be an actual choice and chosen freely.

Alambil · 09/05/2008 00:44

Genesis 22 is NOT about killing children or using them for scarafice - it is about faith. Just to clear that up; Abraham was obedient to God and was faithful that God would NOT kill his son.

Greyriverside · 09/05/2008 13:37

Lewisfan the point is that he raised the knife. Maybe he had faith that god would bring back his son after he stabbed him to death. There are people in prisons and mental institutions who have said similar things.

This is what many 'devout' christians are reading and learning from. It's nice that some have redefined the bible to mean something entirely different, but much of the world is still going by what it actually says.

btw, what's the current excuse for this one?
2 Kings 2:23

LittleBella · 09/05/2008 22:20

bollocks, Abraham was not convinced God would not kill his son. The moral of the tale is that although it grieved Abe to kill his son, his obedience to God was so absolute that he was prepared to do it anyway and God rewarded his obedience by letting him off.

LOL at Elisha setting bears on little children. Puts ASBOs into perspective. I expect there's some liberal new interpretation about how the bears were all part of the circle of life or something.
