Did any of you watch this last night?

I was sobbing. Big, heaving sobs, which I couldn't control. Thank goodness for DH and his strong embrace although he was telling me that I am WAY too sensitive on things like this.

But am I?

Those poor kids.

at my typos!

"Christians" like this are no such thing - they are NOT following Jesus.

Did Jesus shout at people to preach? or did he quietly invite himself to dinner or sit in a boat with some chums?

I think they are a cult - they are dangerous and spreading dangerous messages... not very Christian really.

Spring Harvest and Soul Survivor aren't in the same league at all; I've been to both many times and they are collective worship with normal sermons; no hatred preaching, nothing like that - usually just giant church meetings with camping too (and really fun stuff for family time/kids stuff)

harpsichordcarrier · 07/05/2008 20:13

from that wiki link:

"According to Ron Reno of Focus on the Family, "The directors' claims that they were simply trying to create an 'objective' film about children and faith ring hollow. I don't question the motives of the Christians shown in the film. Indeed, the earnestness and zeal with which the young people pictured attempt to live out their faith are admirable. Unfortunately, however, it appears that they were unknowingly being manipulated by the directors in their effort to cast evangelical Christianity in an unflattering light."

haha pmsl - being manipulated?? I think they were managing it all by themselves without any help....

I think the Jesus Camp v Spring Harvest comparison tells you all you need to know about the differences between the US and the UK tbh

PosieParker · 07/05/2008 20:15

Lyette, there's not much that's worse for a young mind than brain washing with the crap they were spouting, except that evangelical american family who picketted funerals of service men.

LynetteScavo · 07/05/2008 20:22

What is the thinking behind picketing sevice mens funerals?

PosieParker · 07/05/2008 20:29

I think it was because of a tenuous link to homosexuality? Louis Theroux (gosh i cannot spell or type for toffee!!) did a documentary on it. The head pastor said ?God himself is America?s terrorist?, and he blames the war in Iraq on americas homosexualality, and goes on to say that any preacher preaching otherwise is a hell bound false prophets?

JenniferHart · 07/05/2008 20:32

Yeah, that's not christianity. That's madness. They should do something legal to the word Christianity, so that only certain bodies can use the word in relation to themselves.

Alambil · 07/05/2008 20:41

Spring Harvest

soul survivor - summer camp, 5 days camping for teens/young people

Compare the 2 meetings; they seem a long way apart to me

Alambil · 07/05/2008 20:42

oops

hang on - will sort that out

Alambil · 07/05/2008 20:43

Soul Survivor

Jesus Camp - watch from 5.27 for one of the meetings

Greyriverside · 07/05/2008 20:45

Generally speaking Muslims and US Christians are dangerous because they read the Bible/Koran and act on it. People like the Jesus Camp lot are scary because they are devout.

This is why as an atheist I worry more about Islam than Christianity. In the UK Christians aren't really serious about it so it's less dangerous.

Alambil · 07/05/2008 20:47

We are serious about our faith - we just don't go out all militantly spreading untruths about it!

Alambil · 07/05/2008 20:49

and by untruths I mean the way they preach hellfire and brimstone and nothing else.

My old church went out every month to the local area and did "community service" (cleaning graffiti, picking up litter - all the shitty jobs) because Jesus would have been like that, I rekon; because it costs nothing to help people others and be NICE people...

What I got from the youtube clip was "if you don't preach to everyone you meet, you have failed... if you don't tell them they are going to hell unless they believe, you have failed and will go to hell too" - that is not a good message for a child IMO!

It's a combination of lunatic fringe charismatic elements and clever edits, seen it before. They are neither quite as bad and loony as they're painted, nor wholly sound of mind. And the parents are stupid for letting their kids be involved, imo.

It's nothing I'd be happy being part of, but then, evangelical Christianity in the US has by and large sold it's soul to Politics of one stripe or another, which is why you get all the wierd stuff about the president and the flag.

You can see similar sorts of things at Spring Harvest and other evangelical Christian gatherings in the UK, but it has a different 'character' to the US style things.

The Fred Phelps thing (picketing funerals etc.) is a small personality cult that is basically made up of one mad family. Though my atheist friends no doubt lump us all in the same boat, we're no more connected with them than Christopher Hitchens is the same as Stalin.

I know this is all very serious and we shouldn't take it lightly, but I'm afraid I did psml at "Happy" Potter (typo) being put to death ! Sorry !

ninedragons · 08/05/2008 03:59

Could not agree more, Greyriverside.

It's scary, dangrous stuff.

Unfortuatly, there are many more of these groups - Jesus Christians being one of them (they were broadcast on the JK show).

The FLDS (Fundermentalist church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints, led by Warren Jeffs, seems to be one of the more dangerous cults, but I can see some scary similarities. I DO think we should be afraid of these people. They are growing in numbers, and we don't know what they are capable of. We have seen devasting acts of mass suicide and murder and it will continue, all the time these children are being 'brainwashed.' It leads me to wander what the leaders from JESUS CAMP think about the FLDS way of living.

Gives me the willies.

Are the Jesus Christians those ferals who skip-dive Sainsbury's? They were on Wife Swap a while ago.

Disgusting. Social parasites - they were completely hostile to the idea of contributing anything at all to society but were happy to take anything that was going free, from old bananas to health care.

Iamthedoctor · 08/05/2008 11:29

I didnt see that, ND. I'll try and do a search.

children should be running around with bikes and skipping ropes. making perfume with dandelions and daisy chains. playing hide and seek

not being terrified to death by some dried up fat old cow. it makes you wonder what they DONT show in these films. i dont even like taking my children to church for christenings or weddings and singing hymns. and as for singing hymns at assembly...
i just bite my tongue

for these little children
