Honestly why are so many Mumsnetters incapable of reading properly?

OP: I have a green dress to wear to my son’s wedding. However, the mother of the bride is also now wearing green. AIBU to think we can both wear green? They are completely different shades.

And the replies:

‘I don’t understand why you’re wearing green to your wedding. Wear white like everyone else!’

’As the mother of the bride you can wear whatever you want.’

’Why are you desperate to create drama? You knew MoB was wearing green!’

’I’d say change the dress if they’re the exact shade OP!’

’Why do you have your dress so early? I’ve only been to summer weddings so it seems too early to get a dress’.

Why can’t people read and understand what they’re reading?

OP posts:
BashfulClam · 30/01/2025 00:33

I always think about a person at years ago where the op said ‘we have been married for 5 years and have two children aged 4 and 2…’ cue a lot of ‘are you married?’ ‘So you have children?’ Etc. It’s in the bloody OP

PensionQ · 30/01/2025 00:33

Shubbypubby · 29/01/2025 20:14

Totally know what you mean. Sometimes it doesn't help if the OP is poorly written without paragraphs. I don't mean all posters need a degree in English but sometimes posts are very confusing or unclear.

I’ve just posted on my phone with paragraphs but they’re not showing. If I view it on my iPad the paragraphs are there.

Cause MN is an English reading compreheshun and they didn't pass gcse English when they could of - that's why.

I blame social media

NovemberMorn · 30/01/2025 12:13

SoScarletItWas · 29/01/2025 19:55

Because people will trawl your old posts and say ‘Ahah! In 2022 you said you wore white to your friend’s wedding so aren’t you a hypocrite / you said you were NC so why are you going’

(Sometimes people’s earlier posts are useful eg their DP has been a twat forever and this post isn’t just an isolated example - but the gotchas are mostly just annoying.)

Edited

Ah gotcha. 😉

14% disagree with you at the moment. Cannot understand why! The ones that irk me are long threads where people keep replying to the OP without noticing that dozens of other people have already made the same point and anyway the OP has updated and expanded on the OP many, many times, so it's not even good advice now. Also people who don't look at the date of the OP and reply as if the OP asked for advice five minutes ago when she actually asked 15 years ago. Not only did she finally manage to choose a main course for that dinner party, in the 15 years since she's LTB, sold the house and lost contact with all the guests!

14% disagree with you at the moment

They miscomprehended the OP!!

JMSA · 30/01/2025 15:48

People who reply 'why did you have a child with this man?' should be given a slap (JOKE).
The child is already here, so bog off with your pointless posting.

BilboBlaggin · 30/01/2025 15:54

It's not just the ones who completely miss things in the OP, it's the ones who make stuff up themselves eg:

OP: My 10 year old child is refusing to sleep at their dad's house during access (being deliberately vague)

Reply: why don't you speak to your daughter to find out what their problem is?

Sometimes then the following posts will all mention this 'daughter' when the OP hasn't specified the sex of their child. Same when someone is being vague about their own sex or that of their partner. Someone will come along and state it for them, based on their own assumption.

Miaowzabella · 30/01/2025 16:27

Why green? Don't you realise that some people are colour blind and can't even see green? Read the room!

Eightdayz · 30/01/2025 16:38

I get that it can be annoying, people fall over themselves to get some kind of gotcha. (This is really bad here) however not everybody has the privilege of a good education. (Like me)

It feels mean and a bit bully-ish to be criticising people for that.

And with the writing of a post as wee.
Iv read 3 just now that iv given up on because the spelling was terrible

Needmorelego · 29/01/2025 18:31

Neither should wear green..... it's unlucky at weddings !
😂😂😂😂😂
(I get what you mean @Azzywhatty )

Are you my grandmother?

I desperately wanted my bridesmaids in green but she was so upset at the idea that I agreed to blue. I hate blue!

DemonicCaveMaggot · 30/01/2025 17:00

My mother told me green was unlucky because it is the fairies' colour and they get jealous if other people wear it. This also applied to cars, despite fairies usually flying (per Rainbow Magic) and not driving around in Mini Coopers or similar.

I remember a thread where it was me and the OP against what felt like the Hunnish horde (as in Huns, not huns) as everyone misunderstood the original post. It was exhausting.

FOJN · 30/01/2025 17:06

So glad I'm not the only one who is baffled by some of the responses people give on here. Some people seem incapable of responding to the OP using the information they have been given.

Topseyt123 · 30/01/2025 17:09

I agree with you. You see plenty of examples of poor reading and comprehension skills on here on a daily basis.

Spelling, grammar and punctuation are also a problem. I read (or tried to read) a thread yesterday in which the OP had used no punctuation at all and no paragraphs. It was nearly impossible to understand and I almost gave up. In later posts she claimed that you don't need to use punctuation, spelling and grammar on the internet!!

A large proportion of the general population are actually pretty thick and I don't care what anyone thinks of me for saying that.

I had two bridesmaids, my sister and a young cousin of DH's. Both were in green.

We're still married and OK 31 years later.

Velmy · 30/01/2025 17:20

Leave the bastard!

CynicalSunni · 30/01/2025 17:30

I think it is mostly trolls trying to get a rise out of people. You see on lots of threads where someone focuses on one thing and runs with it. If they see others posting the same they do it too. They like to rile people up in the comments etc

ScrambledSmegs · 30/01/2025 17:40

I remember the days of trying to decode Cod's posts (t'were all fields etc etc), some days I felt like a human Enigma machine.

My bridesmaids wore green. At least one of them still talks to me.

EmpressaurusKitty · 30/01/2025 17:58

My ex & I wore purple, being her favourite colour, for our civil partnership ceremony. The relationship was a bloody disaster.

Maybe we should have worn green.

BusyExpert · 30/01/2025 21:33

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 29/01/2025 20:49

🙄

If you are being pedantic I would have thought you would have used a capital letter / full stop on your post.

I left it off deliberately to give you something to pick up on.............

I actually quite enjoy the hard of reading replies, they make me laugh.
OP: my 6yo son refuses to eat any vegetables at all, even disguised in soup or sauces
1st reply: how old is he?
2nd reply: is your child a son or a daughter?
3rd reply: have you tried blending veg to make soup?
4th reply: my 6yo DC LOVES eating veg, even spinach, so I don't have this problem.

Perfect! Grin

EmpressaurusKitty · 30/01/2025 22:24

There’s a thread at the moment where an OP has asked for quick & easy breakfast ideas & mentioned that she hates yogurt. So naturally lots of posters are suggesting it.

RudbekiasAreSun · 30/01/2025 22:24

Some people want just to be here no matter what the post, just out of their heads. May be this is why they post random stuff, because have not got clarity at the minute

It seems not reading information is an issue in other areas of life too. I went for a CT scan this week. The appointment letter I'd been sent was 4 pages long. It advised it would be necessary to drink 250ml of water 1 hour before the appointment and 250ml of water 30 minutes before the appointment. This information appeared in exactly the same wording on pages 2, 3 and 4!
