To think posters should have to pass a comprehension test before posting?

Honestly why are so many Mumsnetters incapable of reading properly?

OP: I have a green dress to wear to my son’s wedding. However, the mother of the bride is also now wearing green. AIBU to think we can both wear green? They are completely different shades.

And the replies:

‘I don’t understand why you’re wearing green to your wedding. Wear white like everyone else!’

’As the mother of the bride you can wear whatever you want.’

’Why are you desperate to create drama? You knew MoB was wearing green!’

’I’d say change the dress if they’re the exact shade OP!’

’Why do you have your dress so early? I’ve only been to summer weddings so it seems too early to get a dress’.

Why can’t people read and understand what they’re reading?

Or when someone is talking about their kids and clearly mentions their ages, then you get a rush of posters asking how old they are.

It's not so much the asking how old they are, as assuming they are some different age and running with that.
So if OP says my Year 12 DD is going camping with her boyfriend.... and then someone comes in saying "I'd never let a 12 year old go camping with boyfriend" and hence whole bunfight ensues.
It can be annoying that the OP gave a school year rather than an age but not as wrong as the poster who runs with the wrong age.

MaMoosie · 29/01/2025 19:42

But did you cancel the cheque though??

Whatisthisbs · 29/01/2025 19:43

@Devilsmommy
I use the App for iPhone and I definitely can filter and see the OPs posts. Doesn't work for other posters on a thread but it does for the OP.

Lammveg · 29/01/2025 19:48

Some people just want to get in there quickly and reply with any old bollocks

If this is a thread about wedding outfits then shouldn’t it be in Style & Beauty?

I read something similar on another thread:

OP- My 6yr old daughter fell and hurt her leg today and has been limping since. Should we go to A&E?

Replies - I think he had a broken arm!
-How old is he?
-What did she injure?
-When did it happen?

Just to digress from the green dress for a moment,😆 why change your user name?

Because people will trawl your old posts and say ‘Ahah! In 2022 you said you wore white to your friend’s wedding so aren’t you a hypocrite / you said you were NC so why are you going’

(Sometimes people’s earlier posts are useful eg their DP has been a twat forever and this post isn’t just an isolated example - but the gotchas are mostly just annoying.)

I'm on android and can't see them

I would prefer an emotional intelligence test. It’s frightening sometimes. And a reading between the lines test.

Drachuughtty · 29/01/2025 20:02

OP if you wanna wear green wear green live laugh love 😘

I used to work in public engagement and we were always reminded that almost 20% of adults in England are functionally illiterate with a reading age of 11 or less. Once you realise that about the general public, a lot of things make more sense. Of course on mumsnet, everyone has 3 degrees and earns 6 figures, but in real life a lot of people aren't very good at reading.

Figures across the 4 nations: literacytrust.org.uk/parents-and-families/adult-literacy/

Wow. I had no idea the figure was that high. I feel very judgy now.

Shubbypubby · 29/01/2025 20:14

Totally know what you mean. Sometimes it doesn't help if the OP is poorly written without paragraphs. I don't mean all posters need a degree in English but sometimes posts are very confusing or unclear.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/01/2025 20:34

14% disagree with you at the moment. Cannot understand why! The ones that irk me are long threads where people keep replying to the OP without noticing that dozens of other people have already made the same point and anyway the OP has updated and expanded on the OP many, many times, so it's not even good advice now. Also people who don't look at the date of the OP and reply as if the OP asked for advice five minutes ago when she actually asked 15 years ago. Not only did she finally manage to choose a main course for that dinner party, in the 15 years since she's LTB, sold the house and lost contact with all the guests!

If you are being pedantic I would have thought you would have used a capital letter / full stop on your post.

What annoys me is when a clearly unreasonable OP posts on AIBU, listens to everyone and admits that she was wrong - but loads of people carrying on having a go because they haven’t RTFT.

Or when an OP posts a tread in AIBU where she is very clearly being unreasonable, a 100+ people comment and tell her she is being very unreasonable but still can’t accept it or fully comprehend the 100+ responses telling her so

Newdoggo · 30/01/2025 00:12

But not a real green dress, that's cruel

Crispynoodle · 30/01/2025 00:17

a) Some people have dyslexia
b) When my DD got married I wore green, her MIL wore green and her dad's ex wife also wore green! There's some great pictures and we all reminisce about it with fondness
