To think posters should have to pass a comprehension test before posting?

Honestly why are so many Mumsnetters incapable of reading properly?

OP: I have a green dress to wear to my son’s wedding. However, the mother of the bride is also now wearing green. AIBU to think we can both wear green? They are completely different shades.

And the replies:

‘I don’t understand why you’re wearing green to your wedding. Wear white like everyone else!’

’As the mother of the bride you can wear whatever you want.’

’Why are you desperate to create drama? You knew MoB was wearing green!’

’I’d say change the dress if they’re the exact shade OP!’

’Why do you have your dress so early? I’ve only been to summer weddings so it seems too early to get a dress’.

Why can’t people read and understand what they’re reading?

Neither should wear green..... it's unlucky at weddings !
😂😂😂😂😂
(I get what you mean @Azzywhatty )

Mooozer · 29/01/2025 18:31

Why is your son making you take a test for his wedding?

ScottBakula · 29/01/2025 18:31

I agree , also read ( at least ) the ops updates before posting.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 29/01/2025 18:33

Sometimes I think it's just speed-reading the OP, sometimes OPs can be a little bit... opaque too. The rest of the time it's a case of purple being a lovely colour for a wedding, why are you worrying?

LarkspurLane · 29/01/2025 18:37

I can't believe you are having a wedding on the motorway, OP!

I can see social services having to get involved.

latetothefisting · 29/01/2025 18:57

I know, it's amazing (in a worrying way) how bad the reading comprehension can be
I asked for a recommendation for nail polish once but said 'I've already tried X brand which wasn't very good, so anything else?'
Guess what brand was the first recommended?
It was a 2 line OP as well so not as if the info about the brand was buried in the middle of multiple long paragraphs, it was literally the only other info than the initial question.

TartanTrewses · 29/01/2025 18:57

It kind of makes me laugh to see the funny thing that people say. MN is such an amazing way to get to know the whole range of people that there are in the world. As long as you are careful to be kind and helpful, and change your username often enough, it's possible to just enjoy the chaos and come out unscathed.

TartanTrewses · 29/01/2025 19:00

I love it when people post who clearly can't manage complex spelling, grammer or even paragraph structure, but who are doing amazingly at running their family life, against enormous odds. That really impresses me.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 29/01/2025 19:02

Green? Did you say green? If the light was green then why on earth did you stop in the middle of the road???????

What? I thought this was just a rule for the theatre since Molière died on stage wearing green. Why weddings?

Sorry hijacked the thread. Yes OP!! I think you are absolutely right. The mother of the bride shouldn't be allowed to wear green because you wear white at weddings! 😊

ShyTealBiscuit · 29/01/2025 19:07

YANBU and it drives me crazy! At the very least people should be reading (not skimming) the OP and OP's updates before commenting on a thread.

blueshoes · 29/01/2025 19:11

People don't read nuthin'. I am a lawyer. I know. Sometimes I feel I am paid to read English.

CHEESEY13 · 29/01/2025 19:12

Ain't life a bit short.......?

CarliLove35 · 29/01/2025 19:13

I actually quite enjoy the hard of reading replies, they make me laugh.
OP: my 6yo son refuses to eat any vegetables at all, even disguised in soup or sauces
1st reply: how old is he?
2nd reply: is your child a son or a daughter?
3rd reply: have you tried blending veg to make soup?
4th reply: my 6yo DC LOVES eating veg, even spinach, so I don't have this problem.

WallaceinAnderland · 29/01/2025 19:17

The recent one where the OP had questions about her deceased mother's past and posters saying 'Why don't you just ask her'!

Just to digress from the green dress for a moment,😆 why change your user name?

QuickDraining · 29/01/2025 19:19

If the mother of the bride is wearing green now, what's that got to do with what she'll be wearing on the day?

grammer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can't do that if you're on the app, only on browser. I think it's just that some people like to take the piss and cause drama no matter what the OP asks

Gwenhwyfar · 29/01/2025 19:31

I think this is less annoying that unclear OPs and drip feeding. That causes more problems for the thread as a whole.

PinkiOcelot · 29/01/2025 19:35

Or when someone is talking about their kids and clearly mentions their ages, then you get a rush of posters asking how old they are.

TheWonderhorse · 29/01/2025 19:38

I'd go NC with both of them.

Having been guilty of blatantly missing key information (rarely but it's happened) I feel for the accidental idiots. But sometimes there are fourteen in a row asking the same question that's been answered twice already and then I despair.

EmpressaurusKitty · 29/01/2025 19:39

JudgeJ · 29/01/2025 19:23

grammer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not on. It’s only ok to correct someone’s spelling, grammar or punctuation if they’re having a go at someone else for the same reason.

GreenSmithing · 29/01/2025 19:39

I used to work in public engagement and we were always reminded that almost 20% of adults in England are functionally illiterate with a reading age of 11 or less. Once you realise that about the general public, a lot of things make more sense. Of course on mumsnet, everyone has 3 degrees and earns 6 figures, but in real life a lot of people aren't very good at reading.

Figures across the 4 nations: literacytrust.org.uk/parents-and-families/adult-literacy/

What annoys me is when a clearly unreasonable OP posts on AIBU, listens to everyone and admits that she was wrong - but loads of people carrying on having a go because they haven’t RTFT.
