Neighbour has an opinion on where I put my bins

We live in on a very quiet cul de sac. The homes have large front gardens and small drive ways. Almost identical to photo attached (not my street just an illustration of our set up). Houses also have a side yard/paved side garden where people keep their bins.

Well I have decided I will keep my bins in front of my garage at the front. We have a dog who gets let out throughout the day. I have a lot of anxiety around my dog being let out as I am not always convinced the side gate is left shut. It gets opened when it is bin day. Every time I let the dog out I have to check to see if gate is close and when I see someone else letting the dog out I shout at them to check. It’s just unnecessary chaos. Ideally I will just put a padlock on the side gate so teens don’t mess up by leaving it open. We live 3 turns away from a somewhat busy b road.

Anyway, a neighbour has since come around and said please can I put the bins back into the side garden as it is unsightly. Granted I am the only person on the cul de sac with them out. But who cares??

I am not the arsehole, right?

edit: whoops looks like I took out voting somehow

I’m not sure when house hunting, top of the priority list for anyone is too ensure there is no option for putting your bins away?

Can you imagine the estate agents spec

Full GCH
Double grazing
Conservatory
Close to schools
No area for bin storage, so good to leave them out the front

🤣🤣

actually, the general feel of the area does matter as it happens.

The price of the properties reflects that.

Surely you know that.

Are you quite anxious generally?

Are you quite rude generally?

Rawnotblended · 29/01/2025 17:08

We had a pony when we were growing up. He was at the livery about half a mile away but my parents went on holiday and my sister brought him home and he was happily wandering around the front lawn (of our 3 bed semi on an estate) loosely tied to a post. The neighbours grassed us up saying “they didn’t have any parties but they parked the horse in the front garden.”

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 29/01/2025 17:08

Is anyone else feeling the bin issue is showing a class divide here? 🤪

The general feel of the area does matter correct, the twitching curtains would put me off!

Get on with your own life and leave the bins alone.

Check your title plan/deeds for any batshit covenants that prevent you continuing.

my friend discovered hers had a “no parking of commercial vehicles” covenant on hers when the neighbour went mental at her husbands work van

I hope your parents laughed as much as I just did!

I feel like my working class roots are showing 🤣

I8toys · 29/01/2025 17:12

Cheeky fecker. I'd make them more noticeable just to piss them off. Have they got nothing better to do with their busybody time.

You mean you don’t take the general feel of an area into account when buying a home? How very strange.

WonderingWanda · 29/01/2025 17:15

We have no rear access so our bins are always out the front. Dh and I disagree about where to put them and we should probably get a bin store but they are expensive and I can think of better things to spend money on.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 29/01/2025 17:16

I'm with the neighbour. They do look awful and if it's a windy day your rubbish will end up in everyone else's front garden. Many people are not lucky enough to have a side return with easy gate access to their driveway. You are. Use it. If all your neighbours did as you did it would significantly impact on the attractiveness and cleanliness of the street.

HollyKnight · 29/01/2025 17:16

Opink · 29/01/2025 16:53

I don’t want to always be shouting at dh and the kids when I hear them letting the dog out the back. The rule is you have to check side gate before opening back sliding door but im sure this is not done 100% of the time. Whenever my son is taking the bins out I basically am having a nag. Im sick of it tbh.

Edited

But you're still shouting at them to check the gate even though the bins are out the front. Keeping the bins out the front hasn't changed that.

HardenYourHeart · 29/01/2025 17:18

What about an automatic gate closer? That way the gate will shut automatically after someone has been through it. That way you won't need a lock and you can keep your bins on the side.

Yeah I do, but bins do not down value a place. Curtain twitching interfering, bossy neighbours would maybe. Although to be honest, if someone knocked on my door about where I put my bins, they’d only do it once.

Awaits cries of, but you’re bringing down the road.

What OP is doing, is completely acceptable and you’re very strange for thinking you’re the bin police!

QuickDraining · 29/01/2025 17:19

I dream of a driveway and a side gate to place bins. We live on a terrace with rear access and the majority of slobbers here can't be arsed to take their bins in, so they are left on the street. It is quite a pretty road but it constantly looks like bin day - three bins each. Any gales and the bins are in the road, and rubbish is everywhere, and it's a game of catch the bin. Then there's the dog shit that cooks in the sun in the bins during the day, that makes it a delight to walk past when you are actively doing the bin slalom or when you want to open your front windows. Just for perspective of what they could have won.

You can sometimes find discreet places to hide the bins, but it's useful having them near the kitchen door. Dogs should be supervised anyway and opening and closing a gate to drag a couple of bins through isn't the most arduous of tasks.

miliop · 29/01/2025 17:19

Neighbourhoods tend to be more pleasant, harmonious places when people have the sense and subtlety to fall in with what everyone else is doing.

Put your bins round the side.

(Also, have you only moved in recently?)

Or if people mind their own business and not interfere in other peoples decisions.

They could go into the garage. It would involve having to move some things around

It does look scruffy. Maybe put a spring on your gate?

That’s why I’ve ordered a lock that only dh and I will know the combination to

Sounds like a great solution - bins in the garage and side gate permanently locked - everyone is happy.

Pickledpoppetpickle · 29/01/2025 17:24

Dogs should be supervised anyway

LMFAO
