Neighbour has an opinion on where I put my bins

We live in on a very quiet cul de sac. The homes have large front gardens and small drive ways. Almost identical to photo attached (not my street just an illustration of our set up). Houses also have a side yard/paved side garden where people keep their bins.

Well I have decided I will keep my bins in front of my garage at the front. We have a dog who gets let out throughout the day. I have a lot of anxiety around my dog being let out as I am not always convinced the side gate is left shut. It gets opened when it is bin day. Every time I let the dog out I have to check to see if gate is close and when I see someone else letting the dog out I shout at them to check. It’s just unnecessary chaos. Ideally I will just put a padlock on the side gate so teens don’t mess up by leaving it open. We live 3 turns away from a somewhat busy b road.

Anyway, a neighbour has since come around and said please can I put the bins back into the side garden as it is unsightly. Granted I am the only person on the cul de sac with them out. But who cares??

I am not the arsehole, right?

edit: whoops looks like I took out voting somehow

Neither of you are. I can see both sides. Ultimately, keeping your pet safe takes priority. Have you explained this to your neighbour?

Potentialmadcatlady · 29/01/2025 15:17

I do similar for similar reasons. My direct neighbour gave off and I said sorry but I have my reasons and then ignored him.
It’s not great looking but it makes my animals lives much safer so hey ho

Rawnotblended · 29/01/2025 15:18

YANBU.

Ignore. Some people - where the hell do they get off!

PersephonesPomegranate · 29/01/2025 15:19

Ultimately it's your land and your choice. However, I do sort of see where your neighbour is coming from...

Since pretty much the whole of the UK is in a state of constant uproar about the lack of council facilities, I'm assuming your bins don't get collected every day. So, why can't you just padlock your gate and unlock it on the, again assumedly, weekly basis you need to take the bin in and out. Maybe two times per week when you might need to take the padlock off & on: 5 minutes work?

I think you're making the gate security issue a bigger problem than it needs to be.

Edit to add that as above, you don't need a justification for your choice but you do need to accept you'll be the odd one out amongst the neighbours.

Your land, your business!

The side gate does get used probably more than just when the bins get put out. Sometimes the kids will come in through the back door if they forget their keys it’s not often but it does happen. I just want to padlock it up for peace of mind.

It looks neater with bins not visible but it’s your choice. Provided they weren’t on my property I wouldn’t dream of asking you to move them. Just ignore.

Fair enough. Again though, I don't see why it can't be padlocked (stops the kids using it etc) but then opened on the odd occasion each week for the bins. Surely that solves both problems; security & neighbours? I can't understand why the bins need to move location just to enable a padlock.

CherryVanillaPie · 29/01/2025 15:27

Could you put them in your garage?

pinkwaffles · 29/01/2025 15:27

Rule of thumb is always ignore neighbours who are using the word "unsightly".

It's nothing to do with them.

Poppychimney · 29/01/2025 15:27

Hmmm, it does look scruffy to keep bins out the front so I can see where your neighbour's coming from.

And it's always a good thing to stay on good terms with your neighbours.

I agree with the idea of a bin store to lock away from pets.

Nonaynevernomore · 29/01/2025 15:27

Don’t have a bar of it! It’s none of her business and you don’t need to explain!

I think you mean "It does look scruffy... in my opinion"

This is entirely subjective and it's nothing to do with the neighbours.

Mrburnshound · 29/01/2025 15:29

It's literally just a bin, neighbour is U.

I live in a terraced house so my bins live on my driveway.

ffs..the cheek of it

whydoihavetowork · 29/01/2025 15:30

Personally I agree with your neighbour.Just keep the dog in when you put the bin out?

AquaPeer · 29/01/2025 15:30

Of course you can keep your bin wherever you like.

anyone suggesting you should do otherwise is INSANE. Who do they think they are? What kind of entitled arsehole thinks they can go over to their neighbours and tell them where to keep their bins?!? WTF?!

AquaPeer · 29/01/2025 15:32

Ps I keep my bins on my front garden for no other reason than my H doesn’t take them into the back garden and I don’t see why I should do everything. Exactly as I would hope any MN would advise a woman taking on more than her fair share of household labour to do

lunar1 · 29/01/2025 15:32

I agree with your neighbour, I wouldn't say anything though!

ForRealCat · 29/01/2025 15:33

I live in a pretty village and it drives me nuts that every lovely cottage has three bins dumped out the front. I go to the effort of putting mine tidily away, but apparently its no business of mine to get annoyed that other people don't take pride in their area too. It doesn't take much for an area to look pretty and smart.

ImNoSuperman · 29/01/2025 15:36

None of their business. Mine are at the side of the house, visible to the street because they are secured to the fence. A lot of my neighbours keep theirs at the side.

I'd add lights to them purely because someone moaned about it. Really highlight them.

Kibble29 · 29/01/2025 15:37

Do whatever you want with your bins.

I can’t understand anyone who panders to these interfering neighbours. I’d put them in the place I wanted, and for good measure I’d also leave them sitting squint to annoy him more. 😈

purplecorkheart · 29/01/2025 15:39

Honestly it depends. I know in my neighborhood that it would annoy some of my neighbors. However they would not say anything. They are good neighbors though so I put my bins aways after collection and only put them out the night before

Anywherebuthere · 29/01/2025 15:39

Ignore her. Who is she to dictate where you put anything.

Its your property. Put the bins where its convenient for you. It's as simple as that.
