Just that really

How many shops are closing in Westfield, both branches? Londoners want to drive.

Oxford Street suffers killer blow after multiple retailers say they're leaving

There are loads of londoners with cars, who want to drive into London, they may not be the majority but they're a big and important 'minority'

Lots of the new developments that go up come with underground parking, it's not a very out there thought

There should be other incentives to get people into London, and that includes being able to drive and park relatively nearby/access the street with ease

People like shopping but they don't want to travel, hence Westfield is still going

Oxford street needs to adapt, it's so sad to see it dying

46 % of households in lower noon don’t have access to a car, that leaves just over half with access to a car - that’s not “ lots” of Londoners

We don't need more cars in London. It's already congested.

Plaided · 28/01/2025 21:08

Go on a Sunday. Free parking on all the side roads, I’ve never not got a space. You’d still have to pay congestion charge though so it’s still expensive.

there are lots of blue badge provisions too, I’m surprised you’ve found it difficult as my neighbour always drives in. Four hours parking and you can park almost anywhere.

For most people public transport is easier. Pollution is horrendous, why would we want to make it worse. It takes me 20 mins on public transport or an hour to drive.

No. Congestion is what puts me off driving into cities London has a fantastic public transport system

EmmaMaria · 28/01/2025 21:26

People like shopping but they don't want to travel

Presumably they are also fond of breathing, something that isn't facilitated by increasing traffic.

@mumofoneAlonebutokay Oxford Street isn't really up-market though? Is it?
Was it ever?
Obviously Selfridges was aimed at the more "well off" crowd.
As a child (80s) I remember going there and going to C+A and BHS.
As a teen (90s) I went there for places like Top Shop.
In my 20s (00s) it was for HMV and Borders Bookshop.

C&A widely known as Cheap and Awful (or Coats and 'Ats)

So upmarket.

My mum and I once looked at a coat in Dickens & Jones. It was a bit tight and I asked if they had a 14.
"Oh, you won't find a 14. Not in London."
Oh how we laughed.

Pedestrianising wouldn't improve things imo. Allow cars to come in from the surrounding areas, work with local councils to make parking cheaper and more plentiful and watch things improve, albeit slowly

You can keep repeating that all you want, but that doesn't make it any more true though, as is clear from the poll.

0gfhty · 28/01/2025 21:45

Things that put me off Oxford Street are; Extremely loud religious preachers, Extremely loud gatherings of rip off 3 wheeler tuk tuks (which most tourists know are a rip off because they've appeared in virtually all tourist cities worldwide), lack of interesting food outlets, American candy shops, lack of interesting small shops. The only thing that makes is more pleasant now is the fact that it's less congested with cars. It would be awful if there was a permanent traffic jam with private cars and the smell a choking on traffic fumes whilst browsing would be more off putting

That's fine, I will do that when i have a bit more to spend - the only thing is the long walk up and down but will at least try it with dd

I have owned a car in London for 22 years and it has never, ever occurred to me to try to or to want to drive to Oxford Street.

Are you also proposing to get rid of the congestion charge and ULEZ as well as magic up non-existent parking spaces and not charge for them?

I am not au fait with disability provision but prepared to be educated in that regard. Other than that, I think your proposal, even if possible, would make Oxford Street worse not better. I think a well-done pedestrianisation scheme could make a huge difference though. It is not very relaxing to walk down at the moment, too crowded. I might be tempted to go there more often if I could stroll a bit more and grab a coffee and watch the world go by.

I would personally be extremely sad about anything that encouraged more cars onto London roads as would I imagine anyone who values clean air. e.g. there are estimated to be 600,000 asthmatics in London.

Cities have to evolve, private car ownership in london is falling

But you can’t expect to park outside every shop? Do you have a mobility scooter. You can park for 4hrs every day with a blue badge on any of the side streets.

admirible · 28/01/2025 22:00

within the next five years all the shops will have shut anyway, everything will be bought on line, so sad.

Penguinmouse · 28/01/2025 22:01

How would this even work with a car? You’d still have to park it and walk? Surely you wouldn’t park, shop, drive a bit further, park shop.

Use Tottenham Court Road, the station is accessible so you can bring a pram if worried about DD.

I’m willing to bet all my life savings and my house that all the shops in Oxford Street will not be closed down on 5yrs time. Have you been there recently, it’s packed!!

I can’t think of any city in the uk where you can park for free anywhere up and down the high street in order to drive and park outside every shop!!

Pedestrianise as much of it that can be done.
Have a tram that connects Marble arch to Tottenham Court Rd running down the middle.
A strict cycle path running along side the tram (if the cyclists ride into the pedestrian part they will be electrocuted 🤔).
Lots of seating. LOTS of seating.
Last thing it needs is more traffic.

This is a great idea!
